I can add to that. "You twinkle above us, we twinkle below. Good morning starshine. You leave us alone. My love and me as we sing. Our early morning sing-a-song."
The original version of this movie is superior in every way. I don't know why they felt the need to go out of their way to make a bad version of a great classic movie. This is not whimsical, it's just disturbing. I mean, the author of the book wrote the screenplay for the original version of this movie. I enjoy a lot of Tim Burton's work. But this movie is an abomination. I hate it.
Actually the author of the book hated the 70s version because it wasn't like his book and what he wrote for the movie was tossed out against his wishes. I believe the family of the late author even said they actually approved of this movie because it was much truer to the source material. Really the 70s movie is the "remake" between the two movies since it redid the story; not to mention it was basically funded by Quaker Oats in the mindset to be a commercial for their new Wonka themed products. This compared to the 2005 film that told the story more accurately to what the author wanted and didn't have a product agenda behind it. Though saying all that, I also do enjoy the 70s one too. Sometimes you just want a simple lighthearted musical romp - it's why the 70s version is a classic after all. It just depends if you're in the mood for an accurate viewing with a little more meat to it, or if you want a lighter and more bubbly musical spin on the story.
1:30 the heavy breathing, the strange mouth movements, the awkward gestures, the shaky sound in his voice, the card with his conversation pre-set... *this perfectly symbolizes every shy person to ever exist*
I may want to see this again to rewatch Depp's performance. But this first scene is amazing. And I love when the dolls catch on fire! Makes me laugh every time!
I have to admit I used to be put off by this scene when I first saw it in 2005. However when I watched the behind the scenes point of view of it it was actually quite impressive and very entertaining after a good while. I definitely think Johnny Depp did very well in this one scene. Especially when veruca says shouldn't he be up there? And Mr Wonka says, “Well I couldn't very well watch the show from up there now, could I little girl?"
"Then Shouldn’t you be up there","well then I couldn’t very well watch the show down here could I little girl" the ridiculousness an eccentric logic in the statement 😂
Now it's the year 2047 and you're 52 years old. The earth has fallen to the superior technology of the Zorbulites, an alien race from another dimension. You take shelter in an underground bunker, hiding from a Zorbulite invasion force. The only possession you have left is an old DVD copy of this film. This scene no longer scares you, because in the 2 years since the Zorbulites have made their presence known, you have seen so much worse.
I feel like this version of Wonka is like a reclusive billionaire who doesn't even know how to communicate with people anymore. He kinda reminds me of Michael Jackson
Exactly, I was thinking whether this was intentional but it seems he wasn't really inspired by Michael Jackson. However his vocal position here is just similar to Michael's.
He was standing amongst them and the answer he gave to veruca when she asked why wasn't he on his "seat" is something to ponder a bit on? Don't ya'll think
This Willy Wonka welcome song sounds almost the same as the Silver Shamrock commercial in the old horror movie Halloween 3 Season of the Witch, where putting on a mask with the symbol would turn your head into bugs, worms and snakes.
This film is in such STARK contrast to the Gene Wilder version. I watched that one first as a child, then this one shortly after. I remember that I genuinely thought these were two separate movies, and my mom had to convince me that this was also Willy Wonka - just a different director. This movie TERRIFIED ME! Like genuinely - the vibes are so dark and just ... off. It wouldn't be as off-putting if the original version weren't so warm/wholesome/NOT disturbing! As I got older I was able to appreciate the masterpiece that this film is - just such a different interpretation of the story, and a genius juxtaposition
Hated those terrifying puppets when I was around 5 when the film came out! Never understood what it meant or why they’d put it in the film? Well looking back now I seem to loose creepiness and think it’s actually quite hilarious!
Tim Burton is known to do things that are far out and creepy and this was creepy but fun Johnny Depp was also in Alice In Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass Edward Scissorhands and Johnny Depp was also in Pirates of The Carribbean as Capt. Jack Sparrow. He has made 6 of them . .. I wonder what Johnny Depp will do next.
Personally i can see the positives in both versions. While Wonka is certainly more likable in the 71 version in the 05 versions I do enjoy the strangeness and reclusiveness of Wonka not to mention I feel like Charlie and his grandfather work better in the newer version. However the music in the first one is better.
This could've been a potential horror film. think about it!
omg, imagine that when one of the children did something bad willy wonka would just stab them.
It is.

Willy both did not prepare for this, nor is he socially capable of doing so.
It’s like Tim Burton made the antithesis of the energy Gene Wilder created
The puppets catching on fire terrified me as a kid, and judging by these comments I'm not alone.
Don’t worry I’m still scared and I’m only 11 years old
I was terrified, But I was more intrigued than terrified, And now I love this terrifying scene.
It freaked me out, but it encapsulated the fact that he secluded himself from the world for so long that the mechanisms broke down without maintenance
Exact opposite for me. I was laughing so hard about it while we watched it in class that the teacher had to pause the film and shut me up lol

Biggest question about this scene! How was mr wonka able to find a way to go over to everyone without them knowing? Genie power?

Is it just me, or is this kinda creepy
The amount of subtle sass on the last line 🤣
Now this is better since it's the TV version, you can tell by the pitch of the audio, slightly higher
