- Now Playing Select Theaters. BROOKLYN tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.
Saoirse I knew would be amazing but after seeing the film, I have to say this. Emory Cohen, is wonderful! I was rooting for him when it came to Eilis choosing between Toni and Jim. He was so likeable and quirky, Emory played him perfectly and I would love to see him in more stuff.
Me too.
I have a mother with an Irish background and a father with an Italian, plus they fell in love in NY....
Say hi to Eilis and Toni for us :D lol xD
That’s mine but in Chicago 😭
I have seen the movie twice now because I can identify my life with Elise. Came to Canada as 20 years old, finish my degree in a College, had a no family or friends here, then fell in love with my husband from Ottawa. After I went back to my home country, I met my childhood crush through a friend. Thought I could build a life back but soon realize why I left there in the first place. I love my husband, without him, I don't know if I would be living in Canada alone. My parents are getting older, they miss me a lot, but I feel like my life is here, in Canada with my husband.
Hit the bull’s eye nice! You did the right choice...
My God, Saoirse's voice is just enchanting.
This movie was awesome!
Omg her dresses!! Absolutely beautiful!👗💕
I LOVED THIS MOVIE. I watched it for Saoirse Ronan because I love her, but I wasn't that interested in it conceptually. So glad I watched it though, it was amazing, all the acting was wonderful. I laughed, I cried.
What a wonderful movie, i feel falling in love again...👍👍
What form of security would you say Jim Farrel offered, compared to Tony? Jim lived with his parents and had a desire to see the world, while Tony had a job, was hard-working, and hoped to have a new home for himself and Eilis.
Eilis left home because she didn't really have a life there. She was working at a shop for a terrible woman, she didn't have any guys courting after her, and she wasn't truly living. That's why she went to America. There, she had a job, she had an education, and for the first time she even had a guy, one who was head over heels for her. During this time in America she changes as a person as well. She becomes more confident and talkative, and she begins paving a life for _herself_.
Upon her return home, however, she finds all the things that she was originally looking for (when she originally left for the Americas) back at home. She finds a job, and she finds Jim, who comes with financial and living security. Jim offers her not only financial comfort (he's got a huge inheritance and a big house) but also provides her with the comfort that, if she _did_ stay in Ireland and didn't go back to the States, she would be fine, because he has a house and money, and would love her and take care of her. Staying in Ireland would allow her to see her best friend and keep an eye on her mother and keep her mother company. Not to mention, home is home. No matter how far you go in life, you'll never forget the childhood homes that shaped you.
But I think at one point she realizes that in Ireland, the life she has is not really _hers_ . She's working in a job in the shadow of her sister, because people are telling her that she'd be great at it. She views Jim as a potential partner because her mother and best friend are telling her that he would be. She considers not going back to the States because Jim tells her that she could have a life back home - and technically, she could. She knows that she would be just as fine back in Ireland as she would have been in the US, which was the conflict. Keep in mind, the only thing tying her back to the US was Tony, whereas back at home, she now had everything she once hoped for before she left.
But I think she ultimately decided to go back to the States, because she realized that her "home" in the States would be all _hers_ , and only hers. No more working in the shadow of her sister, no more depending on someone else for financial and emotional comfort but paving a life for yourself, which is what so many immigrants had to do. It's the immigrant/American dream. You leave home and everything you know, and establish a life for yourself in another country. I don't think one choice is necessarily right from the other, but I think that paving her own path is what she _wanted_ to do, that was her dream. That's why at the end of the movie in the voiceover she says that "you'll find yourself thinking about someone or something that's yours and only yours" because Tony and her life in America is truly only hers.
(Sorry for the long explanation lol this movie gives me all the feels)

mariaarakal wonderful explanations
@@mariakal605beautifully explained.
great love story. I loved it.
I will say this much - Ellis really ticked me off when she considered staying in Ireland for the other guy that she met and she never even opened Tony's letters! She was MARRIED to Tony and committed to him and this side of her I did not like. She only went back because of what that old woman said to her about her and Tony in Brooklyn. Tony's love for her was deep and all encompassing and she should not have been so shallow as to even consider not going back to him. It's kinda like Saturday Night Fever, a movie I loved a lot and still do, but a little less for John Travolta (can't remember his movie name), because of the way he treated the little girl that liked him so much (his dance partner), and then he just sat in the front seat of the car and let his buddies gang rape her. That did it for me . . . .but Tony? Swoon, Swoon . . . .the other guy? not so much. as you can see, I really become part of the book or movie I am into. Don't even ask me about Tolstoy and the way he treated his wife - just finished that one.
I totally agree! I was so surprised with her sudden change of behavior. I know she was going through something traumatic but I find it strange that she kept hiding all his letters… He’s a total sweetheart!! Who would not want to read all of his sweet things?!
This movie is a sad reminder of all the Irish who emigrated and never came back. It is hard to decide if she made the right choice. Sad for all the poor mothers.
El amor de mi vida saoirse ronan no puede ser mas perfecta

Amo esta pelicula
she has got the choice to choose between the two, but for them there is no choice, thats unfair and fucked up for men !
have you seen the movie? It's more than about choosing between two men. The two men are just metaphors of what two lives she has been offered. Often in life we come face to face with the same types of options.
Besides, life isn't fair.
mariaarakal Hmm
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, therefor I see life as beautiful. To some people life is not, and I understand. But to say life is unfair is to also say death is.
