Exactly. I'm only 21, but you're right, no matter how old we are, whether 16 or 61, we can all appreciate those old hymns. Why? There is a certain depth of the message in these hymns to almost make them a singing sermon, as they should be, IMO. Also consider that those old hymnwriters went through some really hard times and STILL glorified God by writing these hymns that we can meditate on as we sing them. Modern Christian songs are often too shallow and trivial compared to these.

This hymn, sung the way it is done here, in reverence and humility, is refreshing to the soul. Often, I find other choirs sing this in honor and glory to themselves or the soloists, not to honor the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. God bless you. He loves the simple and humble.

This was one of the hymns at my mother's funeral. It was not commonly sung in our denomination, but she liked it. Chokes me up to hear it because it takes me back to the funeral.

And so, we must learn to distinguish between Truth which lies deep within us and the external world of appearances. I believe this is what this hymn is all about. We must learn not to accept the fruit of duality, of the tree of good and evil from that allegorical snake.

I often sang this hymn & it meant a lot to me, having lost children & a lot more, myself. It was, indeed a story full of inspiration & I was determined to find out, from beginning to end how Horatio Spafford maintained his faith & sanity after all the losses he suffered in life. Penning this hymn was not the "end" & the truth of Spafford's journey, shows that a human being may have enormous faith but the heart can only take so much of "God's permissive will". Horatio Spafford, writer of a hymn which inspired so many to "keep going, regardless", spent the last years of his life, mentally destroyed, in an asylum. Worst of all, or, as a result of the horror that was his path through life, he died declaring himself to be God.....
For a man to go through such adversities and still kept faith in God is amazing. His life story is one of faith and believing in God always and that this world is not his home. I think each and everyone can learn a lesson from this inspirational song.

Wonderful story but it was not only Spafford´s tragedy that generated this beautiful song. The author of the tune: Philip Bliss lost his life two years later in a tragic railroad incident. He was traveling along with his wife when the train derailed while crossing a bridge. It fell into a river and although Bliss managed to get out of the wreckage in trying to save his drowning wife he also lost his life. God works in mysterious ways to bless us.
Bliss did all that he was supposed to. He wrote the music for this and he along with Horatio are still helping us to praise God and Jesus all of these yrs later. We don't know what are doing today that God can use in later yrs.
It was fifteen years ago, on September 11, 1999, that we held my Mother's funeral. I have the audio cassette of her funeral but, still find it difficult to listen to it. I have not been to Heaven yet, but I have heard my own angel sing for me at my local church. I was new at playing piano in public, and prayed for the Lord to help me in my playing for Him... I heard my angel sing every single hymn that evening.... The most beautiful soprano music ever, and no one present that night sang soprano. I look forward to hearing all the angels of heaven sing very soon when the Lord comes to take us Home.

No matter how dismal or painful THE APPEARANCE, in Truth, all is well. It cannot be otherwise. For we live in a world of illusion. And so, we must learn to distinguish between Truth which lies deep within us and the external world of appearances. I believe this is what this hymn is all about. We must learn not to accept the fruit of duality, of the tree of good and evil from that allegorical snake.
Do not forget that though the children died they will all be resurrected when Jesus returns. Then they will live forever on Earth with about 50 billion other happy people.
You can be with them if you accept Jesus's offer of eternal life!

I often sang this hymn & it meant a lot to me, having lost children & a lot more, myself. It was, indeed a story full of inspiration & I was determined to find out, from beginning to end how Horatio Spafford maintained his faith & sanity after all the losses he suffered in life. Penning this hymn was not the "end" & the truth of Spafford's journey, shows that a human being may have enormous faith but the heart can only take so much of "God's permissive will". Horatio Spafford, writer of a hymn which inspired so many to "keep going, regardless", spent the last years of his life, mentally destroyed, in an asylum. Worst of all, or, as a result of the horror that was his path through life, he died declaring himself to be God.....

For a man to go through such adversities and still kept faith in God is amazing. His life story is one of faith and believing in God always and that this world is not his home. I think each and everyone can learn a lesson from this inspirational song.

Yes, Elly. It is a an honour to follow Jesus when everything is going well. However when discomfort,pain and tragedy afflict us then we are tested like gold in a furnace. H. Spafford is a shining light who put his energy into praising God for his salvation rather than cursing the darkness. . . . . Come ,Lord Jesus into the lives of those who suffer, especially Christians who are harassed ,beaten and killed for their faith in you - in Nigeria, the Middle East and China. Also, Give courage to mothers to resist pressure to abort their beautiful babies. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten the eyes of those who have still to find you,the way, the truth and the life. Amen

Wonderful story but it was not only Spafford´s tragedy that generated this beautiful song. The author of the tune: Philip Bliss lost his life two years later in a tragic railroad incident. He was traveling along with his wife when the train derailed while crossing a bridge. It fell into a river and although Bliss managed to get out of the wreckage in trying to save his drowning wife he also lost his life. God works in mysterious ways to bless us.
Bliss did all that he was supposed to. He wrote the music for this and he along with Horatio are still helping us to praise God and Jesus all of these yrs later. We don't know what are doing today that God can use in later yrs.
He was found in our family tree and we know where his monument is in PA.

Are we willing to Serve the Saviour in our trouble times? This kind of rare songs are the songs brings glory to God and consoles us our trials. It is well, it is well with my soul, for the last ten years of my live i have learned that the grace of God is enough for me, although i have lost everything material as well as my only son at the age of 23, my daughter fell pregnant at age 18, the father of my grandchild ran away, i have not much of a marriage, declared bankrupt and sekwestrated, jobless due to being diagnosed with depression, has no place to call home, no income all the family treated us like burdens or let us feel like jailbirds, God has not forsaken me, therefore i can sing out loud, it is well, it is well with my soul.

I heard my angel sing every single hymn that evening.... The most beautiful soprano music ever, and no one present that night sang soprano. This was my great grandfather's favorite song and has become mine. I can't even sing along without tearing up. The power, feeling and relateability is gripping. When you come to a place where you can say "it is well" with conviction you have truly learned to trust in Him.
