The Dreamcatcher originated with the Ojibwe people and then the mid twentieth century is was adopted by other native American tribes. It was told that the Dreamcatcher would catch bad dreams. It was hung above your bed so that while you slept it would protect you by catching bad thoughts.
The Dreamcatcher represents a spider web and often sacred items like feathers, beaded rocks and beads are woven into the web. These became popularized in the late twentieth century. This is a simple and easy to make Dreamcatcher. I hope that the tutorial makes it easy for you to understand the steps. I spent a lot of time on this to make sure that I didn't go to fast. There are many steps and several different supplies.

I’m Native and must admit that this came out fairly well. Not bad minus the glue and a couple other store bought/man-made things but it’s 2021 so I get it. Normally it’d be all natural and such but this came out nice. Good job 👍🏽

This was a good tutorial, there are some things to be aware of. 1.) don't close off the center hole. You are keeping away the good dreams and in fact creating the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. 2.) do not use Eagle feathers, Hawk feathers or Owl feathers. In the US it is illegal unless you are registered Native American. If you are caught with an eagle feather it is a 25,000 dollar fine plus possible jail time. And yes it happens, even to non-registered natives. 3.) Dream catchers are created and used by Native Americans and have been for centuries. This is not a European invention. One of the proper ways of use of the dream catcher is to smudge it down in the morning or when it moves on its own. The feathers are there to tell you if there is a spirit or something stuck in the dream catcher. You crack open a window and then smudge the dream catcher. Whatever is there leaves through the open window. These catchers were essentially dream shields for while you are sleeping during your most vulnerable state. Some of the dream catchers will have little pouches attached or other objects like roots etc. that the represents the users own medicine or connections to the ancestors. 4.) you never give a dream catcher with a closed hole to someone unless your trying to curse them-think about that. 5.) Most traditional dream catchers will have a turquoise or shell bead on one of the center threads but not blocking the hole.
This is an added protection. See folks every part of a Indigenous person's medicinal objects, clothing and tools has a meaning besides cuteness, artsy and utilitarian function. Many objects had to be put together just right. Sometimes there were ceremonies around those objects in the creation of them. I have one friend whos tribal clan grandmothers got together over five nights and created one dream catcher for him. Each night one of the grandmothers would add something until the catcher was complete on the last night. I have another who will only make dream catchers at night and still another who was forbidden to sell her catchers. She could make them and give them away but she could not sell them. It all depends on the tribe, clan and ancestors as to what is acceptable and what is not. Many Native peoples may not want to talk about this or they may not want to share because there is such a long history of culture appropriation and mishandling from lack of understanding. Still there are also those that have been so removed from their peoples that they just simply don't know. I am not saying that is the case with this video, but just for awareness when creating something that is from another culture. And me personally I do not buy catchers from metaphysical shops, or craft shops like Craft warehouse or Michael's because it is so personal and intent while making it is so important. If a person is thinking about the argument they just had with their boyfriend while making a dream catcher it goes into it. Same with beadwork, my elders told me never to do beading while I have a cold. I would pass that spirit of sickness on to someone else or carry it around with me. I hope this helps in your understanding of the dream catcher you are about to make.

@@vmrose84 smudging is the burning of a bundle or pile of spiritually cleansing herbs/ bark such as sage, myrrh, palo santo, ect, in order to spiritually cleanse your space. It's important to leave a window or door open if you are indoors to give the negative energy/ spirits somewhere to escape.

I cannot say how impressed I am with this tutorial. Visually and verbally it shows and explains every step. Even without audio, you will learn by just watching her fingers. Great job! People will create and share after watching this and that’s the best way to spread the joy we crafters feel when we create something. I joke that if I were ever stranded and had to catch fish and all I had was some cordage of any sort or something I could use as cordage, be it plant or animal, I know I could make a great net! There are a lot of survival skills to be gotten using macrame or simple knot tying. ♥️

Thank you for this video. I'd woven some hoops with the prunings of my young maple tree and didn't know what to do with them. I saw a friends dream catcher and realised my now dried maple hoops were perfect for becoming dream catchers. I had a group of friends over for an afternoon tea, we found your video and were all able to make one in our own 'unique' (we laughed at how 'unique' they were) manifestation. We spent the afternoon pouring protection, nurture and grounding energy into them to bless them as we made them. Thank-you. I just tried this! Didnt turn out as pretty, but i did it! haha i used crochet cotton as my string tho and because i didnt have wire to attach the feathers, i just used a needle to sew the cotton into the feather stick 3 or 4 times to secure it. Thanks for tutorial!❤

If you really want to make this for the intent of clearing out bad dreams, then the materials and intention matter. If it is just a decoration with normal spiritual intent, make it however you want. I made one for my Japanese brother in law that incorporated a wind chime from his childhood.

Remember to use feathers that are "Legal" and not Hawk, Eagle. Sounds odd but in USA at least you can go to jail and or be fine a Lot of money for those amazing feather.

Yes I no. Its hard to get registered feathers. If you not native. All min are. But I still don't use them for craft. Because there for dancing. So I used feathers from Michaels.

My dream catcher that I bought is white And has I one small ball in the center and four smaller dream catcher at the bottom and at the bottom of the smaller dream catcher(all four of them)has beads and white feathers hanging all the way at the bottom.(not lying)

That's not a real dream catcher, but I guess it's a cool decoration. Me being full blown Native American (of the Apache Tribe) I know how to bless and make a real dream catcher, and it's very time consuming much like all other Native American crafts. Great video though!

In my Native culture and beliefs there are a few things to know about dream catchers. Number one, real dream catchers are not sold. Number two, you leave the hole in the center open for the important dreams to come through. Number three, dream catchers are made at night only. Number four, each item placed on the dream catcher are for specific reasons not just because it looks cute or pretty. Number five, prayers, smudge (Sacred smoke), songs are sung over the dream catcher before hanging it. If your going to use another cultures sacred objects or beliefs you should study it first. Anything else is just for tourists and can even have the opposite effect of what you desire. I have seen many "Dream Catchers" with the hole completely blocked or closed for sale in shops. I would never buy it. In my peoples way that's called a curse. I have read many of the comments and been really depressed by how many people are just so naive about stealing another cultures ways without consideration. One such person said it wasn't native....Really? I walked into a Craft Warehouse and saw the crappiest dream catchers ever made like this is just some art project. No it's not, there are serious rituals and beliefs around these objects and if done right they work.

Helpful Tip: hot glueing as you go around the hoop will ensure that the leather is wrapped tightly and evenly :)

You can gave it made usually. Here in Canada there are people who can work deer/moose/cow hide and if you want they can make it different ways. You could also use yarn as it will go faster. And if you want a really big one use a hula hoop as the ring :)
If you are using a hoop made from a branch you don't need to wrap the whole catcher in leather or suede. Traditional ones were not made that way and leather was not wasted. It was used where needed.

To make this Dream catcher more authentic, can I bless it myself? According to the comments below, a Native American has to bless it, and I am part Native American ( not sure which tribe exactly, some tribe around Houston Texas ) But I also am part White ( Russian, French, British and Italian ) and Latin American ( Bolivian, Brazilian, Argentinian, and some Inca ). So I am not sure if that effects the blessing process since I have a ton other nationalities messing with my "Native American vibes".
I am part and mine works, never heard of a blessing tho. I am just recently trying to discover more about my ancestors. I think part of it is just believing it works, you have too or it won't work. Also a saying I have heard (unfortunately not in person) older natives say "if you have a drop of Indian blood in you, you are Indian" in that saying, Indian refers to native Americans. I don't really get to be around other native decendants. I live in the middle of legit no where so it's hard for me to learn about my past. Been googling alot of stuff, and talking to others online just out of curiosity about my ancestors. You can learn alot from just a simple conversation.

dream catchers “work best” when blessed with sage and a traditional prayer is spoken in your tribes dialect, when i buy my dream catchers i do the blessing myself, only because my tribe has programs for the native youth to learn prayers and blessings in the anishinaabemowen dialect
also the dialects are different from tribe to tribe, so if you want to properly bless any dream catchers it’s best to speak your tribes dialect, i live in the area my tribe is from so i learned mine super easy

Where does one find a ring/hoop to make these?
You can go to a tree or shrub and give an offering. Take a nice bendable branch and cut the branch off....more twig/stick than branch. Slowly bend it into a hoop while it is still fresh and tie it with false sinew or heavy waxed cotton or leather. You may want to research the tree so you know the meanings of why you would select from that tree. Maybe that species of tree has importance to your ancestors. If that is too much for you than you can always purchase hoops at craft stores like Hobby lobby, Joann's, Michael's and Craft Warehouse.
This was sutch a good totorial for my first time making a dreamcatcher although I did struggle to tie the nots at first and made the mistake of using yarn to try to make it next time ill be trying a different material. thank you for this great video
