It is the middle of the night and my wife is terminally ill. She is also complaining of the smell. I have to spray or something. You might mention how smelly it is to burn deer hair in future. Hey Barry, that was one fine looking piece of deer hair. I know that the center back is premium hair from the white tail deer I've harvested over the years. My last buck was outstanding, very long and thick and very dark, looked much like your piece. I read where the mask is very good for comparaduns and I saved one, even though the gentleman at the fly shop said it's very hard to find the right grade, and he had to sort through many. Well I've never seen one for sale so I saved mine and used it with good results. I wasn't able to save the ears but I did on another because it looked like good dubbing but never used it (I wanted to make a deer's ear nymph ;-) I'm looking forward to your post on preparing deer hide and mask. I'm going to watch your deer dubbing video next. Coincidentally, a viewer of Davie McPhail commented that he used to go Fran Betters Adirondack fly shop to learn fly tying and Fran showed him how to dub deer hair. The still of your dub video reminded me of Betters piggy back nymph. Thanks Barry, I'm learning alot from you!
Thanks Maz man, Yeah if you are spinning deer hair, centre back is best, but all the other hair is also useful. If you can get a whole skin, take it. You prepare the skin just as you do the mask.
Is dynama a thread that can only be bought in the UK? I have tried to locate it in the U.S. and haven't found it. I do live in a large but sparsely populated states so there are not many shops. I am just wondering about it. I might be able to find it online. Nice caddis. Sean
Barry, I was wondering how you preserve your roe pelts - I've kept a nice 10" wide strip from the back of a first year roe doe from last weekend's hunt, scraped and salted it, what would you suggest to keep it in good usable condition? Thanks.
rosbifet froggy Hi, as nobody's come back to you on this one, maybe I can make a few helpful comments. I've been preserving bits and pieces of a variety of animal furs, tails etc over 40 years or so. If you want the skin lovely and soft like Barry's I think you've got work on your hands, but if you just want to preserve it usable for tying I'd say don't put salt anywhere near it! Salt attracts moisture and your skin will be forever soggy. Scrape as much fat and tissue off the skin as possible and rub in lots of Alum, nice and thoroughly. Leave skin side up to dry with a good sprinkling of Alum on top. When it's totally dried out dust it down and pack it away. You might want to add something to guard against moths and mites. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I've had no bother doing it this way and I think life's a bit short for spending hours and cash treating skin which is ultimately just waste.
Hi, Sorry, but You Tube has only just let me know about your comment! Callum has given you a good reply but I could add the following. If you salt it don't let the salt sit on the skin, just give it a good rubbing with a coarse salt and then brush off the remaining. Then place the piece in-between some newspaper to extract any remaining moisture. You can the nail it, stretching it at the same time, skin up onto a piece of wood and let it dry for a few days. Hi RH, You have to tie in the deer hair with very tight turns, and then make 3 or 4 very tight turns in front on the bunch you have tied in just around the hook shank, before you tie in the next bunch. Good luck!

Here we have Mule Deer or Whitetail Deer. Thankfully our season is in the early winter and I much prefer Mule Deer for spinning. Untanned. The best was or is a big chunk of hide that was nailed hair side in against a shed for three years. Surprisingly there were no bugs in it but we needed a bandsaw to cut the thing up. Best deer hair for spinning I ever had.

How small a hook size can you do that with? Looks strait forward, but I can see the deceptively and intriqueing skill involved with the deer hair. You make it look easy, but...... Very nice. THis is one of those imitations I think that represent caddis that actually dive beneath the surface to deposit their eggs. In the UK and Eastern USA they are referred to as Grannom caddis?? Maybe? Like UK's Davie McPhail, you bring something of a different style and approach that I really enjoy watching.
Hi Dean, and thanks! Well its actually easier on smaller hook sizes! The smaller the hook the less deer hair that has to be used... Its a skating caddis so its designed to be pulled in short strips through the surface, a real fish attractor!
Barry - A 'heads up'. RUclips are stuffing this film with ads. It's not your fault, obviously, but it really intrudes. I feel an ad at the start and finish might be reasonable, but interrupting ads (two at a time) just throw what is otherwise a brilliant instructional sequence. It's greedy.
