An almost forgotten chapter in the history of the HIStory Tour... German Michael Jackson fans had to be strong in May 1996. It was announced that plans for concerts in Germany during the upcoming HIStory World Tour got cancelled. The reason was a new artist tax law by the minister of finance Theo Waigel. The new law was meant close a tax loophole which many German artists had previously seized to save taxes via fake residencies in neighbor countries. But at the same time the new law created a disadvantage for real foreign artists performing in Germany. In Michael's case and the high production costs per show, it meant that each concert would have ended up with a minus of about 160.000 DM (~80.000 Euro). It was probably not Michael himself who personally reacted to this, cancelling concerts, but rather Sony Music Germany and big concert organizers like Mama Concerts putting pressure on the government, using their biggest star to create the biggest public outcry possible. The story was all over the news in Germany, other international artists reportedly threatened to cancel concerts as well. Theo Waigel then even wrote a public letter to Michael, asking him to reconsider and promised to fix the law. The happy end came about a month later, when it was confirmed that the HIStory tour would come to Germany in 1997. I didn’t know this. It’s sad that some people are blaming this on Michael but indeed it was probably $ony who cancelled it because of the costs because Michael would never want to disappoint his fans 🌹

Allein das Wort "Jacko"...das hör ich mir nicht länger an
Damals wusste keiner, dass das irgendwie negativ zu werten ist, vor allem hierzulande.
