You also got to recognize that before this duel, the viewer had no idea that Rank-Up-Magic would show up. The viewer had previous knowledge that RUM cards were a Barian/Astra power or a card created to fight against the Barians. The only RUM card Humans (Sans Yuma) could use was Argent Chaos Force, and it put a big strain on the humans body. When I first saw Shun activate a RUM, I remember me and the chat freaking out. It meant that anything from the previous series were on the table. And guess what, about 13-15 episodes later, D-Wheels show up. This was probably the start of the prologue for what was to come later in the series.

The build up and framing add so much to it as well. Had these two characters not been previously introduced as suspicious without any hint of a connection, had there not been the twist heel turn, and had they not crafted the confrontation around the atrocities of war without pulling any punches (the symbolic destruction of the field, essentially collateral damage, is truly grisly and disturbing) then it wouldnt have the same impact.

    • @toony1232
      @toony1232 Год назад +9

Tbh, Sora stays hedonistic but in his case it's kind of like a virtue? He values his entertainment way more than the institution that stole his childhood from him, no matter how much they drilled loyalty on him, which was the whole reason why he stayed a wild card even after it was made clear that he cared about Yuya and Yuzu more than he cared about whatever mission Academia gave him or his petty revenge against Kurosaki. And what Sora derives his entertainment the most is being with Yuya and Yuzu, because he had no friends in Academia due to the dog-eat-dog environment he was in. He still stays insufferably arrogant but his loyalty to Yuya and Yuzu healed most of his insanity as shown on that duel, it's probably the ONLY time Yuya brought someone over through the power of EGAO in a way that makes sense

This entire duel was absolutely amazing. From the introduction to the dueling, the little subtle hints that Sora's people incited a War with Shun's people and home, Shun's absolutely badass dueling skills and acrobatic skills. The intensity of his Voice Actor when declaring basically anything angrily. The monsters and duel itself.
That duel was simply amazing, no other way to describe it. To me, this was the 2nd best duel in all of YGO for me. Episode 24 made me a huge fan of Shun, but from episode 33 onward he became my favourite YGO character ever.

Yuya vs Sawatari prior is underrated as well, it nailed the whole entertainment and action duel idea, with two characters who pretty much became frivals by the end of it and oddly nothing on that scale was seen again?
Shun vs Sora is probably on the same level as Nasch vs Vector, so much story told through one duel, with enough back and forth to keep you guessing. The duels with unravelling history behind them seem to be something YGO has become quite skilled at over the years.

Shun has pretty much the best duels of the entire series.
My favorite duel is Shun vs LDS trio, but more because It's the best written "team duel" of the entire franchise.
The synergy between their plays and the way the effortlessly supported each other with different decks and without needing to use useless cards that have nothing to do with their playstyle was * chef's kiss *
Shun debut in that duel was super memorable with the huge ass attack stat achieved so early in the Show with that awesome attack animation of Rise Falcon!
Shun vs. Dennis was also freaking intense! I love the whole sequence of Satellite Falcon attacking, from the chant to it to that super overkill kill sat attack!

Barrett even acknowledges him as a honourable duelist and warrior. Even better in that duel, when Yuzu is trapped by Sergey’s field spell, he discards Smile World to destroy it and free her symbolising that he’s willing to abandoning his smile philosophy and entertainment duelling so long as Yuzu’s safe and can at least make her smile. Really displays how much he loves her.

The way Shun's and Sora's deck functioned was a reflection of their story:
Rise Falcon dying, followed by the activation of Rank-Up-Magic Raptor's Force that summoned Blaze Falcon, symbolizing how no matter how many comrades fall, another will rise in his place, the resistance cannot be taken down.

Surprised you didn't mention the second layer of nostalgia going on in this duel. This whole thing was basically GX vs. ZEXAL from start to finish.
Sora is dueling just like Judai did, summoning a Fusion, losing it, and then bringing out another, and another, always trying to adapt to the situation at hand with a new creature. At the end, he even pulls out a Miracle Fusion-esque card, making use of everything he used before to summon his final ace.
Shun, on the other hand, is playing exactly like the ZEXAL duelists did. ZEXAL duels consisted mostly of a character summoning their ace monster, and then just concentrating their efforts on keeping them on the field, or bringing them back when they were destroyed. They don't just summon something else, that monster is your soul, and you're going to fight with it. By the end, he's evolving his Rise Falcon, always keeping a single ace of the field, and fighting just with that, a one man resistance against the army of fusions Sora is using.
This duel was incredible in just every possible way.

When shun was first introduced I sided with him because he was dedicated in his mission. Even tho at the time I didnt what it was. I didn't trust sora. He acted to innocent all the time even tho he was a kid. Honestly, yeah. This duel has a stake in best duel of the franchise because of how thematic, cinematic and pivotal the duel was to the entire series.
Good point on the Frightfurs but here's an addition. For the majority of his air time before this, Sora only used Frightfur Bear; a creepy monster but still looks like a goofy bear. However, then we get to Leo and Sheep which are either looking far from their original form (Leo) or so twisted that its giving you Hellraiser vibes (sheep) before culminating in this gigantic monstrosity which looks more like a three headed robotic Leatherface than a Frightfur.
I do like how Sora's arrogance towards Shun also goes from "He thinks he can win" to "He can't lose to someone who he sees as his inferior which he helped subjugate and slaughter for fun to the point that they're Yugioh's equivalent to fascism". Frankly, because this duel was so good, it made Leo's woobification even worse.

Sora turning from a loveable character into a complete psycho who only wants to destroy is perfect and his deck is symbolic of that. The fluffals is his cutesy side where he is sweet and the edge imps is his michivious side given that imps are mischivious creatures, And the frightfur are these sides combined into one and show his true nature, that of a sadistic soldier that loves war and fights. Kurosaki explaining his backstory is also really good and it left nothing out that would show why he was so furious.

Even though this duel is excellent one of my most memorable ones from Arc-V but my favorite by far is the 2nd duel between Declan/Reiji vs Yuya. Not only because Reiji won but also he is my favorite character not only for Arc-V but whole Yu-Gi-Oh and his deck is my favorite and I still use it time to time and the second deck I own. The way he simultaneously summoned his Ceaser, Alexander and finally Genghis is something I always like to to do but so far has managed once. Not to mention seeing his Oblivion King Ceaser Ragnarok and Dow Dawn Kali Yuga those monsters were epic as well and Yuya for his part summon both of his Odd eyes fusion dragon Rune eyes and I am blanking on the other one. But they almost took down Reiji but he used his dark contract card to survive. Yuya then also XYZ summoned Dark rebellion dragon and then Odd eyes rebellion dragon and I thought it was over for Reiji but he pulled through using his Dark Contract trap card by negating and resetting it Yuya's trap card which first negated Reiji's all card effects.
Even the premise of battle was so well done. Reiji wanted to recruit Yuya and held this tournament to weed out strong from weak. But Yuya blinded by the fact of losing friends who got carded by Duel Academy duelists and his selfish love for Yuju doesn't let him see what's at stake. So Reiji played on it didn't tell him Yuju wasn't carded or kidnapped and she has willingly left with Yuya's synchro counterpart. All the while letting Selina and Shun tell each other their stories helping all who were present understand the dire situation and what Harland City been through.
So that's why it's my favorite duel of all time.

Even after that point, there was still fantastic moments. More people just talk more negative without mercy with little to no praise. Even Dylan though we love him has kinda gone that route outside this vid and some other exceptions to the point where he’s probably biased. Deep down he probably dislikes the majority of Arc V, Yuya, most of the arcs after Miami etc. I’m hoping in the future if he hears our voices, he might give in and do a video talking about the positives after it’s supposed decline in quality.
