    What was your first Kirby game? (if you've played one of course)

    • @Spirit_of_Yubel

      Incidentally, this game, "Nightmare in Dreamland." It was also the first game I completed myself, all three campaigns 100% too.
      I enjoyed the Meta Knightmare mode when I found out I could play as him. Even if I couldn't save.

      My first Kirby game was Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. I played it back when I was around 5 and the games structure often led me to getting lost and ending up back where I started, but I really never got tired of doing so. I was too enamored with the gameplay and visuals that just playing the game was fun. Ever since then, I've been a huge fan.

    • @aweso100
      @aweso100 5 лет назад +2

      @@TheDemonicmuffins Amazing Mirror was also my first. I played it on a friend's Advance, and fell in love at around 7 years old. When I got it, I played it into the ground, and I think it's EVEN MORE completionist friendly. In fact, the same friend had Nightmare in Dreamland and let me borrow it. I was actually underwhelmed simply because the only one I had played was a pseudo-open-world one, and this one was completely level-based. It wasn't until playing Super Star Ultra (and also borrowing Squeak Squad from that same friend) that I realized that was actually the norm for Kirby games. Super Star Ultra is probably my favorite overall simply because of all the content. But Amazing Mirror holds incredible nostalgia for me. The idea of secrets elucidated in this video, I feel, was built upon and improved in Mirror.

      Even stranger is that his wish comes from a place of having skipped Adventure. If he'd played Adventure during its heyday, he'd likely come to the conclusion that Kirby's lack of traction then was mostly due to the game releasing so late into the NES's life as opposed to any faults with Adventure itself.

    Don't look down on Adventure everyone, the level design is superb. It's a great game

    • @marx4538
      @marx4538 5 лет назад +2

      I disagree. The level design may be nice, but the future installments had better level design and actually controlled well - Adventure not only has some sort of an input lag, but the flying is also completley different and much less fun to use. The abilities are one-move only and it makes them become boring and less use-able. Plus, the original decided to sacrifice the framerate and the gameplay as a whole for nice graphics - something a game should never do. It's technically marvelous, but it's not fun to play when you get low as hell framerate just because the developers decided to say "oh look at this cool background that is impressive-looking!". Super Star and it's successors are much better games, in my opinion.

    • @fernando98322
      @fernando98322 5 лет назад +2

      @@marx4538 I'll give you the flying and the framerate (things that the remake has fixed obviously) but I found it was so much fun and refreshing going back to a simpler Kirby game because even with one move abilities (I didn't dislike them before but I also greatly prefer the Super Star method, but now I have an appreciation for Adventure's abilities), the simplistic but thoughtful level design complements the abilities. A Kirby game that makes me change abilities often to complement level design (not only for secrets) is a great Kirby game in my opinion.

      For me a great Kirby game is a one that makes me enjoy having abilities and have high replayability from using them alone. Kirby's Adventure and NiDL didn't feel as good for that as Super Star, for me. But hey, opinions.

  • @Valanway
    @Valanway 5 лет назад +20

    For some reason, it really seems like they were really stretching and searching for things to talk about in this video, particularly things that don't involve NiDL directly. A really sizable chunk of the video was about focusing on how Kirby isn't as popular as he could be (even though he's the absolute most supported first/second party Nintendo character/series behind Mario and Pokemon, and the majority of his games and merch sell like golden hot cakes) or that he *really, r e a l l y* wishes that NiDL was the first Kirby game, or that it just blows the original out of the water. Well, yeah, it's a game that came out 9 years later and was made on more powerful hardware and made by a more competent team.

    Aw yeah, the first Kirby game I ever owned. I remember playing Adventure on a school's emulator. Except the key the computer used for the right D-pad input only worked like 30% of the time, so despite having a LOT of NES games, Kirby's Adventure was the only one people could play at all since Kirby could fly and abilities like Fireball or Wheel let you move forwards automatically. Still, when I saw those ads for Nightmare in Dream Land, I was like "That's it! It's the same game from school, the level design is totally identical, but it looks better and the d-pad will actually work! I HAVE to get it!" Thus, I got a GBA, and finally had access to what has become my favorite videogame series ever. When you played that Dedede final boss theme, man, my heart did a thing. Just absolutely ANNIHILATED with nostalgia.

People complain that Kirby is too easy and too cute, but man if it wasn't for a game like this I actually believe I would be a much different person than I am today.

    So, you're comparing a gameboy advance game's graphics with one for the gameboy. Yeah, that's not remotely fair. And why is Jirard talking like no one plays Kirby? Its one of Nintendo's bigger properties and its most consistently good. Also, every main kirby game has a difficult extra mode, its not unique to nightmare in dreamland.

    • @awesomesauce94
      @awesomesauce94 5 лет назад +9

      Thacobell it would be like if I said “what if Mario galaxy was the first Mario game instead of the original nes one, look how primitive the original is compared to what it could of been”. Yeah I agree it’s not a good comparison to make for a hypothetical “what if” scenario that doesn’t make sense.

    • @ivanbackfromthecardshop8093
      @ivanbackfromthecardshop8093 5 лет назад +8

      Not only is it unfair but i dont see how t would change anything. I didnt think the early games made kirby look bad and missing out on 6 of the first kirby games some of which ive commonly heard as peoples favorites and are a big part in the lore so im pretty sure the series be much worse off.

    • @thacobell4700
      @thacobell4700 5 лет назад +4

      @Kadeeen But its bad info. Nightmare in Dreamland is a pretty standard Kirby game. Everything Jirard is praising about it, is present in almost every other Kirby game, many of which have MORE features. And there's zero reason to compare it to a gameboy game. The technology was different and if this game came out back then, it'd look a lot mroe like Kirby's Dreamland. Its a disengenuous comparison.

    • @MissAshley42
      @MissAshley42 5 лет назад +4

      Yeah, the premises of this video are strange. By the time Nightmare in Dreamland released, Dreamland 2, Superstar, Dreamland 3, and Crystal Shards had been out. Heck, Nightmare in Dreamland came to be _because_ there was an established fanbase for the series. (Not to mention the anime was airing around that time!)

    • @thacobell4700

      @@MissAshley42 Nightmare in Dreamland is really just a graphical upgarde of Kirby's Adventure as well.

    It’s funny. Nightmare in Dream Land was the very first Kirby game I played as a kid and my experience was just like Jirard theorizes. I loved Kirby and played this game over and over again because of how awesome a game this was. I never understood people who thought Kirby was dumb because this game was so awesome to play!

    The Completionist could indeed review the original Kirby's Adventure! If he revisited it, he'd likely enjoy it a lot more, even if it's not up to the ranks of its remake (a very well-deserved one). It is a lot better than he made it look, but at least he has a reason to find Kirby's Adventure to be one of the lesser games of an otherwise first-rate (in a "don't judge-a-book-by-its-cover" way) franchise. It is because he found it to be dated with how (not extremely) little it had to offer, so even great works of fiction can warrant a remake to enhance what made them strong! Kirby of the Stars is no exception.

    Aw sweet, I love this game. I actually just completed it myself not too long ago. I got out my file and I thought I had Meta Knightmare unlocked but I didn't. So I must have deleted my old file or something and I completed my Extra Mode file and got to go through it as Meta Knight.
    I hope you do Amazing Mirror next for Kirby. I think that one is even better than this one.

    My favorite game boy advance game. I played this game a lot. I re-beat it many times. and yes, I beat it as meta knight. I personally would have mentioned in the video that you can't save as Meta Knight and maybe further stressed that the game play was designed for Kirby and don't mesh well with Meta Knight and yet it still is very fun to over come it and take the challenge.
    Very glad Jirard enjoyed this game. I feel like it was worth completing it.

    I remember back in 2003 December when I went on holiday to Florida and went to a GameStop, my Dad bought me Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland; I was so excited! Proud to say that it was the first game I've ever fully completed 100%! I never realized that it was a remake of the NES classic until I was a teen. But yeah, I was pretty disappointed that after you beat Meta-Knight's campaign that the game didn't have anything else to unlock/offer...but still great remake though!

    This was my first introduction to Kirby and after playing it and finding out it was a classic nintendo game I was surprised that hardly any people (I knew) heard of it.
    My brother got the game and lent it to me once he completed it and I put so many hours into the game that I considered buying my own copy.
    I never really liked the follow up game with the mirrors though, found it over-complicated things

    I only have 2 things to say.
    1) The original japanese title for this remake is "Hoshi no Kirby: Yume no Izumi Delxue" (Kirby of the stars: Fountain of Dreams Deluxe) as the original NES game was called Fountain of Dreams' Story. It was renamed "Nightmare in Dreamland" for the western audience because marketing(?).
    2) And this is a very important point. *Ehem*
    *Huwail*
