Did you change out the rear brake lever for a Gs style? Or the gear shift lever? I have a GS clone I recently bought and I’d like to convert those over. Very nice bike you have!
love the video!!! im trying to recreate what you have done here in the states, how do i find a 21" wheel? is it bmw only? to be fair, i really have a 1000 questions, lol
I was lucky, a UK firm had just rebuilt a front wheel and put it on fleabay. I went for R100RT brembo forks which are the same as the original 80G/S. so the bmw wheel went straight in with the spacers. A lot of folk put an alternative front end on, KTM etc off an enduro. Obviously a certain amount of home fetling is required. Any bm hub can be laced with a 21 hoop of course. My mate put a later gs marzocchi front end on his.
@@rustynuts82 I guess I forgot that you built this from a donor frame and fitted RT forks. I'm working off an all original R90/6 so I guess I can lace on a 21" rim and Bob's Your Uncle. That's British for Good to Go; as I preach to the quire. I'm a Yank here in Seattle area. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Hi mate, i have the original r 80 Gs, seems i can only change the battery by unbolting the rear shock? Can that be? I also have the 100 rs, nice bullit proof bikes, arent they? Thx for the channel brother! Bob Belgium
Yes Bob, you need to undo the top shock mounting and move it aside to get the battery out. if you struggle for long enough you can do it without but it's the easiest way....
That looks like a fun bike. I've got a 78 R100s & have been thinking of doing something like this with it. Did you do anything like put longer rear shocks on it, or change the bevelbox for lower gearing? Also where did you get that rear mudguard.
Hi, glad you like it. The mudguards are UFO classic range. The shocks are 370mm eye to eye from a triumph scrambler. Ive just put some 400mm Hagon enduro shocks on. I would say 380/90 max as the uj is looking a bit stressed, but works fine. Yep, 1000cc motor with 800 bevel drive….it goes!
What’s the estimated weight? I’m considering jumping from my Guzzi small block scrambler over to an airhead and converting whichever I’d get to a scrambler as well. Hoping I could get it under 475 lb.
I expect it is under 475lb, just! The later engine with nicasil barrels and light flywheel would help. The guzzi might be better for really narrow gnarly stuff. Those pots do hit sometimes, especially in deep ruts. The BM gets defeated by very steep, very loose tracks with rock steps where you lose momentum. Otherwise it’s surprising what it’ll manage.
Closer to the original. Smoother engine, probably enough power for off road use. Although for over land the 980cc is maybe better. I do like the heavy flywheel motors though in 980cc.
@@rustynuts82 yes I’m daft enough to as well, I um’d and ar’d about it for ages until 3 hour before entry’s ended. Decided I’ve got better front tyre and suspension so should be all good! 🤦🏻♂️

@remerglobal sounds like an exciting build. The 6 day BMs looked properly capable.
Great bike. I really enjoy how it sounds..
Cool intro.
Nicely done 👍
Very nice bike. Where did you buy that lugagereck at the back?
The rack is from Flat Racer based in the UK www.flatracer.com/flatracer-bmw-tic-rear-luggage-rack A similar one is available from Motorworks.
ive gota r65 the main bits probly 70% off was thinking of doing something like this with it
That would be the perfect base, I think the original prototype used the 65 frame.

Still on the standard levers. I’m not sure how difficult that would be tbh. The Frame mounts might be significantly different.

@@rustynuts82 ty , I truly appreciate it
Great work! Love it! Does the front wheel have to come from a GS? Can the original hub be laced with a 21 inch rim?
A three rib hub is jus fine. The wheel needs two spacers to centre it, one either side….different sizes.

Thanks. So far its been used mostly for larking about on welsh tracks n trails. I do have plans to go further afield. Hopefully Morocco soonish.

Hi Is this a 2w warning light for the generator or did you do the resistor mod for the charge light?
It’s a warning light for the generator. Its the only idiot light on the bike, two idiots would be dangerous!
2 Watts?

Mmmmmm, can’t remember tbh. But it is necessary in the charging system. It’s been to Morocco and back so works ok!
Great vid, I like your new ignition switch, is the tupperware box still hiding behind it?
Decided to ditch the waterproofing in favour of aesthetics. Although an ex takeaway box always looks urban chic on any bike.
