  • Perfect for these cold winter nights, the Hot Buttered Rum is a mix of spices, boiling water, and light Puerto Rican rum... All traditionally served in a Trader Vic's skull mug.
To make the HOT BUTTERED RUM:
    --------------------------------------
1 "Heaping teaspoon" Hot Buttered Rum Batter*
1 1/2oz Light Puerto Rican Rum
    Boiling water (about 3/4 cup)
    *Hot Buttered Rum Batter
    1 pound brown sugar
    1/4 pound soft butter
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
    1 pinch of salt
    --------------------------------------
Pre-heat skull mug with boiling water. Put batter into mug.
Add rum. Fill mug with hot water. Stir well.
Plunge hot poker into mug. Decorate with cinnamon stick.

Allspice is actually it’s own spice, which are dried berries. The English thought it’s flavor was a combination of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, hence the name. Thanks for the recipe!

I've made the HBR batter numerous times. If you substitute hot milk for the water, you have a Hot Buttered Rum Cow. If you use hot apple cider instead of water, you have a Hot Buttered Rum Cider. I've also used it as a spread for cinnamon toast, and for sauteeing bananas for Bananas Foster.

“Creaming” butter and sugar is a particular baking term. Using a Kitchenaid stand mixer would help you out a lot!

It was an ancient Buddhist tradition for Tibetan Lamas to drink hot yak butter & spice tea out of chalices made from human skulls & silver that were often encrusted with semi-precious stones. And because you asked - Pinup Palmer was one of your most amusing guests.

Great episode! Hot Buttered Rum was my first Tiki cocktail at Trader Vic's in Emeryville. It was in the skull mug, the reason I ordered it, but no red hot poker into the drink at the table side. It was good, and I'm pretty sure the bar tender was liberal with the rum. And this is of the the few videos series I look forward to every week, keep them coming!

Allspice is not a combination of spices, but the seed of the pimento tree. It's the only indigenous spice to the New World. It has flavor profiles similar to the other classic spices (nutmeg, mace, clove), hence the name.

Pre-heating the vessel like that is something you are supposed to do when making tea. You heat the pot so that when you make the tea is doesn't immediately lose heat to warming up the tea pot.

Growing up we seemed to always have a little plastic tub of hot buttered rum mix, I loved it. I didn't put rum in it, but it was still good. Now this has me thinking of seeing if I can find that mix again. i know it's cheating, but rum i have, I don't need to buy a bunch of other stuff if I can just find the ready to use stuff.

I recently acquired one of those hibachis myself, and then I found a small ad for them in The Book of Tiki, (page 184 specifically) it says right on it 'asbestos table pad', I'm pretty sure the fire bowl is also asbestos. Just thought I'd throw that out there, you may not want to use it for actual bar/kitchen purposes.

The batter looks like a compound butter. If this is something you plan on having occasionally might make the batter up ahead of time and roll it up in some wax paper. Will store easy and makes the portioning much simpler as well

Do you have a PO box to send to, or would the return address from the glasses work? Can't send rum from Florida but could send a total wine gift card.
