How much I paid for a garden renovation

  • Over the past year, I've been giving the backyard of my new home a garden makeover. It started as a square of grass with a lovely glass greenhouse in the corner. Bit by bit, I've added a rose arbor, raised beds, a patio raised bed, and pea gravel garden paths. The transformation in one year makes me such a happy camper! It means that I have a garden ready to go for spring planting and the work has added a lot of value to the house.
    But what has it cost? In this video, I go through all the major projects, show before and afters, and at the end give a grand total*. Please keep in mind that plants, seeds, and other gardening sundries are not included. It's the cost of taking a patch of grass and turning it into a small kitchen garden.
    I also compare the cost of the construction of the home garden to the allotment garden. The latter has cost me very little since I built it over the years using discount, free, and foraged materials. The same goes for many of the plants I grow there too.
    *Aside from one project, I and my OH did all the labor. If you're watching this and wondering how much it would cost to get a landscaper to do it, you should speak to a local landscaping company. The price will likely be many times my own amount because of labor and write-ups on materials. Businesses are there to earn a profit, but if you have the time, tools, and determination, you can save by doing it yourself.

    You turned your home garden to a beautiful sanctuary. Watching you working diligently on restoring the greenhouse was amazing. I enjoy your videos. I used to have a huge garden. Ba k then, we used to barter with others for things we needed. Thus kept the costs down. Broken concrete converted upper gardens. These where interspersed with rock garden plants and vegetables hiding the concrete. It was a lot of work but we managed with full time jobs and raising our two little ones.Today, I have a modest flower garden and a lot off potted plants.,

    Great video ... very inspiring. I like the fact that it is not just a video showing the results, but the actual work and planning that goes into creating a garden. And delivered with a wonderful energy .... I am a new subscriber. I look forward to catching up on all your videos. Even the seasoned gardener always has a little something extra to learn.

    Thanks a lot for doing a pricing video, as so many don’t, and instead show the output. While I think that’s a lot, I totally get why, and also feel the same about the value it can bring the property.

    We have a huge garden which we do up as we go, just my partner and I. We're lucky though he's a carpenter and working in construction industry so there's plenty of timber offcuts available to us for free. Also free pallets and other materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill. It's going to take us years to have the garden the way I want it (he wanted a huge lawn, I want veggie garden, herb garden and an orchard) but it will be worth it 😊

    That seems reasonable to me, you've got a lovely garden. We took the opposite approach: we spent about £2,000 on a big polytunnel, a dozen cold-frames, lots of raised beds and truck loads of manure on the allotments, but we now save £4,000 off our extended family food bill/year and gift another £6,000 to friends. We took a fraction of those savings and that paid for our our garden transformation : All the best - Steve

    Well, I really enjoyed this video, as I always do. I am hoping to move in a few months to a new house, along with my son and his family. The house is to die for, but the garden id going to need some work. A new greenhouse, as the old one blew down some time this last year, raised beds etc. I am really looking forward to it, your videos are going to be a big help with our designs. Fortunately my lad and daughter in law are very handy. Wish us luck xxx, regards, Pat.

    Love the raised beds and the gravel path. These two design elements work so well together. I‘m also about to redo my back garden and am eyeing up a Rhino greenhouse but they‘re quite dear. But then again they probably last a long time and they do look lovely. Anyway the only thing missing in your back garden is a small wildlife pond maybe...

    Pricey, but taking into account how nice it look, it will add quite a bit of money when the house sells. Now, if I could replicated some of that in my yard, I'd be very happy. First of all, is there a "how to stop being a procrastinator" course somewhere? Joking asides, I actually have a second building in my property, which used to be a carriage house, from before the automobiles, which is really pretty. Looks more like a cottage. I had the roof replaced in both buildings to match. A lot of scrapping and a lot of paint should make into a selling magnet. I do have the tools. Again about that course....

    Your garden looks fantastic, and the price for what you've done here is about what I'd expect. I'm more the reuse/recycle/refurbish. I get my wood by driving around in wealthy areas looking for major renovation jobs or new builds, it's amazing what you can get for free. I also am huge about shopping at the end of the season for perennials at discounted prices and starting from seeds or cuttings for everything else. Compost is free and as I live in Alberta Cowboy country, I can get as much horse/cow manure as I need for Nada. Your greenhouse is beautiful, but cheap as I am, I would build my own hoop house instead, greenhouses are outrageously expensive where I live in the Rocky Mountains, thousands more than you'd pay in Britain. Overall both your gardens are great, but I still prefer the allotment.

  • @petereiche6129
    @petereiche6129 4 года назад +1

    Very nice for a limited amount of money! I've seen too many "garden renovation" videos recently, which are all about building and outdoor furniture, often with ripping out all plants, and, in the worst case, all hardscape and even artificial grass. I don't think creating a valuable garden means spending a lot of money, and especially not having a shiny, new, modern look, which may look absolutely degraded and ugly in 5 or 10 years. My only question is wood for raised beds, in contact with earth: how long will it last, and how easily can it be removed/replaced later?

    Sometimes you have to pay up. I have just ordered an expensive chicken run/coop. In the past we have made do but this time I just don't want the hassle and the freedom of not having to rush home to lock up the chickens is worth every penny. I am growing a new garden on a difficult site and will do it your allotment way.
