When you have a cable with 30kV and 3kA in it you really , really, really , really don’t want a leak. There’s enough power going through a cable like that to vaporize a bathtub of water in couple seconds.....
Borkzilla I’m thinking this splice is probably made on a power line up in the air. Not underground. Underground lines are contained in conduit. This line did not appear to be contained in a conduit. In fact it looked more like a communications line than a power transmission line.

I'm a retired Lineman / Cable man of 38yrs. This may look more time consuming, but compared to hand taping as I was taught early on in my carrier, it is more faster. Price is very expensive, either way, you miss one step on primary voltage and your screwed. You'll see extra pieces on trucks when you had to open a new kit to replace one part, then you have to answer for the added cost to the project. Trick is when working with high voltage cable slow and easy, faster you go more mistakes happen. I encourage all young'uns to look at this trade, it was very good to me.

1st MV termination I was involved in as an apprentice went to shit and blew up a 4160v switch at a NORAD site on Antigua in 1987. It was just after dark when the base lineman called the power house and told them to energize the circuit. I was great fireworks display! I am just glad I was the apprentice and essentially handed the Journeyman tools and other items as he did the work (did the work wrong evidently). I flew back to Florida the next day and missed the ass chewing on base.

Nice video, and after seeing the comments below, I can tell there are a lot of hacks commenting. There are good reasons for having connections like this, sure there's more than one way to skin a cat, but if you have to have a connection that will out last the rest of the cable and be safe while doing so then this it. Plus it keeps the guys with the clip boards off your back.

i don't think you know what kind of cable this is... its for 7Kv-33Kv(after what i can see in the video), if there is any small airpocket between the grounding layer and the inner core then you will see the joint burn over in a couble of hours, or a couble of days if you're lucky.
Borkzilla this line would not be running to a single house. If anything it would be coming from a telephone relay station. High power lines are rarely dual conductor cables. This looks more like a communications cable.

I love mastic, but geez never seen so much crap used to seal a joint. Might as well of used some glue at the edges of those cool shrink wrap tubes, just to make sure.. but I think its sealed.

Obviously this was back in 2011. I don't see the reason to use three shrink tubes when the insulation can be brought up with rubber tape 1.5 % greater than the original OD of the cable.

I once fired an electrician because he was always using bodges with tape instead of going down to the wholesaler and buying the proper connectors. Now here we are ....
Just seems so extra.... Just solder the wire and use normal heat shrink, or use a wire nut and 3m super 33 or vinyl electrical tape! Haha like what in the world

Needs more tape

The first is applied to protect the first wire, the shrink tube is the one who protects and the tape is used to seal the shrink tube

Essentially, everything thing inside the mesh is electrical isolation and everything outside the mesh is mechanical protection and moisture sealing.
