I remember Mr. Charles very well. Many days I would go out of my way on my drive to school just to wave and smile back at him. He always put you in a good mood and his infectious cheer spilled over to everyone else. It is important to remember how much a little bit of happiness can do.
I love this feel-good story. The journalist did a great job capturing he delight of passersby. The best shot was the dog looking at him like "he's at it again" LOL. This is what some would call Good Crazy!
Thank you! We have a FB page to honor Mr. Charles and we honor him on his birthday every year - "Friends of the Waving Man of Berkeley, Joseph Charles."
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! I have been hoping to watch this ever since I first saw it on Sunday Morning as a child. I only saw it once, yet it changed the way I thought about what it means to bring joy to others and to find happiness for yourself as well.
On a whim, I googled "waving man berkeley" and here he is! I lived in Berkeley for 20 years and I always commuted using a route (even if it was longer) that would take me past Mr. Charles. He would shout "Have a GOOD day!" and "You're beautiful." Wonderful smile, wonderful heart. I'm so happy to see this video. And now I can show my son footage of someone I've been telling him about for years.
Mr. Charles is another example why Berkeley used to be the greatest city in the world. It really was a beautiful and unique and loving place. I have very fond memories of him.

A man who has love in his heart...not a bad thing.
