Recognising Palestine does not mean recognising Hamas - Micheál Martin

- Tánaiste Micheál Martin has said the decision to recognise Palestine as a State is not a decision to legitimise Hamas.
The Government announced earlier this morning it would take steps to recognise the Palestinian on May 28th.
The decision was made, according to the Tánaiste in coordination with Norway and Spain, who will also announce their recognition today.
Mr Martin said this decision, as Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz suggested, shows that “terrorism pays”.
“Recognition does not involve recognition of a government, it's recognition of a State,” he told The Pat Kenny Show.
“That applies to every State that we recognise around the world.
“Our policies and diplomatic engagement can very much evolve in criticising Governments
“We've been very consistently calling for reform of Palestine.”
Hamas is a terrorist organisation which has been strengthened by “Israeli strategy and policy”, according to the Tánaiste.
“We see this [recognition] very much as endeavouring to implore moderation,” he said.
Mr Martin explained the recognition of Palestine involves upgrading Palestinian representatives to that of an official embassy rather than a “mission”.
He noted that Hamas, who governs the Gaza Strip, does not form part of the Palestinian authority in Ireland.
Instead, Mr Martin emphasised the role of the leaders of the ‘State of Palestine’ declared in 1988, including newly-appointed Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa.
“I spoke to [Mr Mustafa] yesterday,” he said. “They have an ambitious programme for reform.
“There is a clear mood now that in the aftermath of this war, that there will be a technocratic Government installed in Gaza, that would administer and govern Gaza.
“The agenda will be on the reconstruction of Gaza [and] a new Government needs to come in.”

The same guys won't recognize the state Ireland is in!
Exactly
Because them and ENDA the fraud KENNY put ireland in the state it. In now
that palestine conflict has nothing to do with irland end of only one flag and that is our own flag
I totally agree
absolutely 🇮🇪
Bunch of clueless leaders who focus on issues that have no benefit to the Irish people. Vote them all out next year....
Don't wait until next year
I wish they would recognise the Irish people. Our culture and our constitution
Precisely
Both dead men walking. Both gone after the next general election when their parties are decimated.Maybe they can move to and live in palestine
Just Government deflecting from Migration Crisis…
That's exactly why this has happened...elections
Gangster and a liar. Along with the rest.
Respect for Newstalk covering this issue with the interview. As a foreign observer, I wonder how the Ireland's government would respond if the rest of the world suddenly recognized parts of Ireland as independent countries. Mr. Martin can take radical action in foreign policy but he can't deliver significant change to Healthcare or housing.
You know full well why Ireland has recognised Palestine. Ireland was a colonised country. The Irish people, its culture and traditions were almost wiped out by the British, the same British administration thar created the state of Israel. Israels retaliation which is completely understandable but Israel has gone too far. Internationally I don't know how this will affect Ireland in the long run.
Palestinie is not part of Israel
But to Martin, soverignty is a backwards idea. 🤔
Only if it's Ireland, pale stine or uk ra ine are entitled to sove reingty
And now we will be flooded cheers
If he has been talking with Egypt, then why has he not put pressure on, or even ask them why they are not letting the people from Gaza take refuge in in Egypt.
Because the Egyptians and Palestinians both know that israel is trying to push them into the Sinai to be left as refugees. They are right not to do israel's dirty work.
@@AmsterdamagedHQwell said. Imagine the world telling France they have to take Irish refugees during wars and then the Brits just planting more and more English and Scot’s on our land.. we wouldn’t be allowed back.
@@AmsterdamagedHQahhh ok so Israel is not guilty, it’s Egypt for using innocent civilians to push a land dispute… got it
@@AmsterdamagedHQEgypt like the rest of arab countries have kept their doors locked to Palestine for years before Oct.7th. Ask yourself why
Whats the difference between the Irish government and hamas. No difference
I wish he'd recognise the sovereignty of the Irish people and state rather than tell us were backward looking should erode our own culture & heritage with millions of foreign nationals & then tell us he recognises Palestinian sovereignty culture & heritage !!!
Fairplay, recognizing Palestine ..... Can they put their focus in Ireland borders now?
Aight so this a thing there too. Whole of Europe is being filled from what it seems
No they won't! Because they love to import terrorism to Ireland
What a load of nonsense. Everyone here is banging on about Palestine but if they were to come to this country we would back foot as fast as a rising tide 🤦
They are here already...but not starving...they love Ireland😂
We do virtue signalling better than any other country
M Martin says the Palestinian people will now be heard and seen...unlike how we are treated here in lreland by our government.
Undeserved after what the Hamas government of Gaza did to an Irish citizen on the 7th of October
How on God's green earth can you recognise a state without recognising it's government!?
He said that he could tell the difference between the people of Israel and their government but he can't see it in Ireland.
Middle East ignorance abounds!!!! 😳😳😳
Totally the wrong time to be doing this. Hope they insist the new reforms include full change of the whole education system
"I will bless those who bless Israel, and l will curse those who curse lsrael." Says the Lord. Fasten your seat belts Ireland, it's going to be a very, very bumpy ride! 👍
Big declaration from Ireland without one hostage set free. Absolutely shameful.

What will happen to Ireland and Spain?
Pat Kenny has been around for a long time so he understands better than most the complexity of the Palestinian problem. Jordan, Egypt, Syria and to a lesser extent Saudi all have had their problems with the Palestinians hence their reluctance to be overly involved in coming to their aid. To recognise a state that currently doesn't exist is ill judged and premature and is politically reckless..The Two State solution won't be achieved by political posturing in the hope that one of the three may get a UN or EU position at a future date or that all three may get a bounce in the upcoming Elections..Meanwhile while politicians make pronouncements Palestine is burning...What a shameful world we live in.
Exactly
Funny Ireland was one of the first to recognise Germany during the war
Pay attention to your own country and problems first !
The british yank icj said that all countrys should do what they can for a country being genocided including using force as necessary
What's the difference between Hamas and P.A? Curious as I thought the were one and same.
They are ..☺️
Look back on this 1 year from today - and see what the consequences are.
Let's say for example - the Palestinian population gets forced out of Gaza due to one reason or another......and the Israelis want to export them...... and they decide, because of our stance on this issue, to start flying them into Dublin.....
Just putting it out there......
Let's see who ultimately benefits from this.
they are enemies hamas took over most areas pa is isolated near powerless
There was a Palestinian civil war after Hamas won the elections there over a decade ago. The Palestinian Authority were left in control of the West Bank and Hamas were left with just Gaza. Hamas are the more radical and militant of the two.
@AKbamoida so the PA have nothing to do with Gaza? If that's the case then what or who does our Government recognise in Gaza under the term "State?" You understand my confusion?
More interest in other counties rather then they're own
Free the hostages
The money talk question is who pays those politicians for Palestine state recognition this will be Qatar or Saudi Arabia or... Well done wet rags.
So who’s the head of the Palestinian state then? Because last time I’ve checked all their leaders were hamas leaders.
Check what they did in Lebanon where they took in "poor" pal est years ago
what about the Uiygers in China
did he recognise Ireland? You know mihole, such a tiny country on a very small island very west of Europe kissing the Atlantic ocean? What about our borders? Sovereignty, maybe?? Would be nice. To remind you it's a flag of this mysterious country 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪, would it be worth recognising?
How can Ireland justify breaking outside of EU policy on Israel and credibly criticise for example Hungary and Slovakia for supporting Russia against Ukraine?
Rare W for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.
Still won't be voting for them though.
In before
"Ireland for the Irish"
"They should recognize the state of Ireland first"
And other nonsense.
Slippery, greasy, slimy wriggling worms are never easily to get a grip on
Talking sh
Same
Well, it’s just a political move nothing more, a meaningless statement, virtue signaling at it’s finest.
@@italianspiderman5012 True. Also not a mention of the EU Migration pact in the Dail nor the Hate Speech Bill, all gone quiet just before the Elections.
They should recognise our right to peaceful protest in our country. The Gardai are starting to act like stormtroopers and brutalising the Irish people.
Are we not supposed to be a completely neutral country and how are these clowns speaking for the entire country on this matter get them out of government asap
Pathetic, recognising a country that is ruled by Hamas "terrorists" might as well bring some of the Hamas people over here and give them free shelter and leave more homeless irish citizens on the street smh
Now all the Irish government need to work out is how to get the Irish nation to recognise their unwanted illegitimate rule not to worry we only have to wait till the next elections, how is that Covid science going for Pat I wonder
Destroyed his own country but tried to get some political points abroad
They need to recognise the state of Tolbot Street
Point to where this palestine state and its borders are please.
I can assure you wherever you Point out will be disagreed with by the "Palestinian" lot.
But they already had that🤦♀
Will Hamas be in charge of ihis new state of Palestine . Micrl Msruu Jerusalem will never be divided
I am Irish, but Jerusalem will never be divided.
Michael Martin
Do yoz approve of the Halocaust Michael Martin?
The name Palestinia is a Roman Invention
Or 'Palestine' in English.
Ummm yah it kinda does. I’m from Kildare
Your basically rewarding Hamas for what happened. I’m no fan but this is clear as day.
"In terms .... none whatsoever" 😂😂😂😂 what a joke, but not funny for us
What about the W.H.O. pandemic treaty?
Easy to see how welcome this is to the irish people. You're hanging yourselves lads 😂
More refugees on the way
Virtue signalling exercise
Gestas and Dismas were the names of the thieves crucified beside Jesus ..Gestas was said to be on the left of Jesus and Dismas was said to be on the right of Jesus...Go figure!
It does the palestinian people voted them in
I don't understand why Arab nations are reluctant to recognise the Palestinian country based on the UN 1967 borders?
Because they know what they are capable of. Palestinians voted a radical Islamist fundamentalist, regime to power. Such a regime, and those who voted for them, will never put the laws of any country over and above their religious dogma.
Check the Arab initiative for peace in 2000s. Refused by Israel
Because Palestinians are nothing but troubles

I hope Ireland is ready to welcome those Palestinian from Gaza as refugees....I hope Trinity college students are going to open their family homes to those 100 students from Gaza Strip that they demamded to bring to Ireland....It would no chance at all for Hamas using this route to escape....none at all...
