    High speed from the US Doubler upgrade kit for 1050 drive (also by ICD), not only made it faster but allowed the 1050 to support double density, and not just "enhanced" density. But you also had to format disks in SpartaDos format to get the high speeds. Normal Atari DOS formatted disks read the usual slow speed.

    ICD out of Rockford IL. Rocked. They allowed me to drop an MFM controller card which ran 30 meg hard drives. I wish I could remember the adapter. When you bought it, you had to drill hundreds of holes in the case and attach a cooling fan or it would burn up.

    Nice - I can vouch for the quality of those 3D printed cases. BTW - last week, final version of 4.49 was released (you probably already know this).

    I've just recently discovered your channel and am really enjoying your instructional videos! Incredible content. The 800XL was my second computer after the Timex Sinclair 1000. It's all in storage now but I'm itching to get it all out and set it up again to relive the nostalgia. You're doing a fantastic job. Looking forward to what comes next.

    Recently discovered your channel because I'm getting an Atari 800 (again) and I am devouring your videos. You need to make some more before I catch up! 🙂

    I'm glad you liked it -- shortly after I got mine I actually installed an U1MB in my 800XL. But I still have a 130 XE I plan to use this cartridge with - I was going to order the extender as well -- but I was worried about stability -- I will be looking forward to seeing what you end up doing to design a case/support for it.

    The idea is cool but that "L" board is super lame by itself. Definitely needs a case and maybe legs underneath for stability. I like the case for the SpartaDOS board. Cool color and I'm not even into purple. BTW, what's that extra piece you set aside?

    • @8bitandmore
      @8bitandmore  4 года назад +1

      That extra piece ended up being an extra top pass thru for the cart (same one that is on there now held by four screws ). I guess they figured it could break after years of use.

      Good thing the new SDX cart has a built-in clock, because with a separate RTime8 stacked on top, you'd need a really tall monitor stand ;)

    With my original MIO extender from ICD, they either added two rubber feet at the back of the board, or I did. Too long ago I don't remember, but I sure miss them. I loved SpartaDos too. The only DOS for hard disk management on the Atari.

    • @billkendrick1
      @billkendrick1 4 года назад

      MyDOS also handled hard disks, no? (It can definitely handle, say, 16MB disk images coming off an SIO2SD these days, for example.)

    Thank you for your channel all your videos! I am getting back into my 800xl and have been watching all your videos. I’m looking to get the new Sparta dos x cartridge and printed case. Do I need 128k to be able to run? I still have my original, non upgraded 800xl. Thanks!

    • @8bitandmore
      @8bitandmore  4 года назад

      It will run with 64k I believe.

    Thanks for the video, I learned a few things. What are those "Disk error while saving memory!" messages about? What's triggering them?

    • @8bitandmore
      @8bitandmore  4 года назад +1

      On the 130XE you need 128k of RAM to have the memsav file created. It lets you return to BASIC from DOS and still have your code.
