    Your help and my trusty tube of white lithium grease saved my son's printer, I can't thank you enough! Now he can go off to college with a perfectly functional MFP-8710DW printer. The old lube was indeed sticky and old. Thank you so much!

    Thanks for your clear instructions. Just completed regreasing the sleeve on a Brother HL-6180DW. The printer text and horizontal lines were fuzzy, but are now sharp. This issue is explained in Brother Service Update P1398. Appears to be common at about 20,0000 pages. The update recommends replacement of the fuser unit, but the regreasing of the sleeve does the trick. I used Molykote HP300 grease from partsmart. I used 2g of grease. The only thing I would add to your excellent service description is to either replace the fuser sleeve or carefully clean the interior of it, as there will be old grease there. A bit tricky to clean, but I did reuse the original and it worked fine. My lower roller was also heavily creased as is shown in your video, but that does not appear to be a problem. Now to see how long the fix lasts...

    I was lucky to find the sleeve and lube for 20 bucks on eBay.
    I got this off the previous tenants, didn't want to toss it out, cleaned it all out and still jams, thanks to your video I know how it ended up in the storage room!
    Few weeks from now when it's here, can't wait to swap and lube it out!

    Thank you. I finally got around to trying your repair out. Worked well for my old Brother 5470DW printer that was smudging and where fuser replacement was prohibitively expensive. Hopefully this will extend the life a bit. It's not even the expense as the printers are cheap when on sale. It's just that I'm sure it would go into the garbage bin rather than be properly reused. I'm giving the repaired printer to a nephew for school from home use. Thanks again - worked.
    PS - I also broke the clip (that you warned us about). Due to the heat, the plastic is super weak/friable. HOWEVER, I was able to just put the broken plastic piece back in place (without gluing) and the pressure from the metal brackets and other parts seem to be working to keep it together/working properly. At least for initial testing. Don't know about durability of course.
    2023 Update - 2 years out and the repair has held up. I have now had to repair my 2nd unit using the same technique. But the 2nd unit fuser was pretty worn so it wasn't JUST the lack of lubrication this time resulting in failure. STILL, I will keep the unit as a backup printer for now.

    Thanks for this terrific video! In your experience does regreasing the fuser sleeve address the problem long term? Like was it just one year where the fusers were not greased properly but then greasing it makes them normal? Or do you end up having to redo this every 15,000 pages? Thanks!

    Hi,
    thanks to your video,
    My Brother MFC-8910DW was printing out misty prints(they were not at all crisp/sharp), thanks to your instructional video, I was able to replace my fuser pressure roller(which was peeled/scrapped off on one side) with a new one, However i did not remove the fuser sleeve to clean and re grease the inside, as i did not have the right grease handy. After i put the printer back together i could not really see that much of an improvement in its misty print quality.
    Will the crisp print quality be possible only after we clean and re-greasing the fuser sleeve ?
    thank.s

    My problem is the printer does not apply enough heat to the carbon powder on the paper, so it smudges when being touched. Would this fix that problem? Thank you.

  • @alext.4525

    Any idea whether this process would work on the HL-L5200DW? It uses the TN-820 (or TN-850 high-yield) toner. I've watched the video and it appears there are some differences, but I'd like to find out if this fix might work before I start disassembly.
    My symptoms, I believe, point to the fuser. Pages wrinkle ONLY when duplexing, and there is toner underneath the wrinkle, though it is smudged.
    Printer is less than three years old and sees very little use (home user).
    Thanks!

  • @MarkGrinevich

    Does this also fix the jamming issue? Or this fix is only for the smudging?

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  2 года назад +1

      Hi. It depends. If you have checked the printer to make sure there isn't anything in the way, then yes, usually you will have to check the fuser. Rollers on the fuser wear out and start skipping on paper, which causes jam. So yes, if your printer paper smudges when you wipe it, that means the rollers are worn out and are not doing the job. It isn't just for smudging. That is just a way to see if fuser needs new rollers. After rollers are properly replaced, jam will go away.

      @@303electronics thank you, my printer has both issues. Jamming and smudging.

      @@MarkGrinevich I'm 99% sure replacing the roller and fuser sleeve will fix the issue. Make sure you get the correct set. It should cost around $30 on ebay or Amazon. Takes less than an hour to replace. Let me know how that goes.

    I'm not sure if you're still responding to the comments but I have a hl-5470dw and I ordered the fuser and the roller along with the grease took it apart did everything mentioned here and put it back together and when I print, after it prints about 15 or 20 Pages there's tons of ink just dragging along the pages several pages and then it'll stop and then start again. No consistency. The drum is new?? Any ideas? Are used almost half the container of Grease in which I was instructed to do with the instructions included.

      Hello. I'm sorry for the delay in response. If there is a lot of toner that isn't supposed to be, two things: faulty drum, or faulty toner. Sometimes a bad laser unit, but less likely.

    If you needed to change the fuser sleeve or fuser roller, where can we buy products from a trustworthy place/seller? I wouldn't want to buy something that will be faulty and melt inside my printer. Do you have any recommendations?

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  3 года назад

      I bought some for different models on eBay and Amazon. I usually recommend looking at the seller rating and feedback. Honestly I bought from different sellers and quality seemed to be good no matter where I ordered. Just make sure you order for correct printer. If anything is wrong or if you do not like the part, usually free returns are available from most sellers. I sell parts and have people return items "just because" and we accept returns without hassle. I do not have these rollers however, but am almost positive that whoever you buy it from will be a safe transaction all the way. I can say that for eBay and Amazon.

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  4 года назад

      Hi. No, I don't think that's possible. You can try disconnecting the fuser sleeve by breaking contact inside of the sleeve. I dont know if printer will detect a problem, but your fuser will not heat up. That will print an image, but it will be smeared just by shaking the paper.

      The page count on the fuser is based on the specs set by the manufacturer. It’s just an estimate. The machine is just counting prints.

  • @luxbox

    I have followed the steps. before the toner was fixed on the paper correctly, but with big shadows, after about 90.000 prints. I have used a clear silicone grease made for cars, which should work from -30 to + 200°C. as result now the toner will not fixed correctly. But if i change the paper setting to "labels", it works, and i get a clear print without shadows. so it looks like the fuser gets not hot enough. is there a maintenance setting for tweaking the temperature? Or what could be the reason for this? Too much grease? (does it cool it down? or change the sensors values?) always printing with the media setting "labels" is no solution, because i also have to really print labels, which needs more heat again.

    • @303electronics
      @303electronics  4 года назад

      Seems like its time to change the fuser roller and pressure roller on the fuser. There is not temperature adjustment. The set only costs about $30 and instructions further into the video.

      @@303electronics thanks for the quick answer. I still ordered some sleeves incl. grease some days before. i guess it will take 1,5 - 6 weeks from hongkong to us in germany. so i was simply trying before with one of the printers, which i still sorted out, because of the bad prints... anyhow: why should a new sleeve and pressure roller should help in this case? before, i added the silicone grease, the toner was burned stable onto the paper. So i would say the heat was ok. As i understood from your video, or may be from the translation of the word grease, the problem was, that because of to less (or too much used) grease, the sleeve was not able to move enough anymore. Now it is able to move, but get not hot enough. Or did i understand this wrong? Is the sense of the grease not make it move? Is the grease instead to transport the heat?

    The fuser film is a piece of shit, it brakes too often and too soon. Replace the the metalic fuser film with the plastic one found on HL5500 and newer models, you will be more happy and will last longer. A very big problem its that you need to replace the heater plate if its damaged like on this video.
