  • In Europe today, one out of every two imported honeys is fraudulent! Fraud techniques are numerous and difficult to detect, which explains their constant increase according to official figures collected by the European Commission.
The consequences of these fraudulent imports are numerous and violent for European beekeepers, who cannot stand up to this absolutely unfair competition. If nothing changes, the EU could lose 5 million honeybee colonies in the years to come.
Solutions do exist, and could significantly reduce the threat posed by these counterfeit products!
To counteract misleading consumers, beekeepers are now putting pressure on the European Union to tighten up the rules on controls and impose origin labelling with the % for each origin on the label. It’s an essential starting point to put a stop to fraud. The European Commission has the all the momentum it needs behind it to act now and revise the Honey Directive and it is high time for action both at national and EU level!
Under Farm to Fork, its flagship policy for agriculture, the EU is eager to propose different targets. This is why Copa-Cogeca would propose one new goal to the Commission: reducing counterfeiting in half by 2027 compared to figures in the analysis carried out in March 2023 with a view to having no adulterated honey present in the European market at all by 2030!
If you support this target, if you want to show your support to European beekeepers, don't hesitate to share this video with the hashtag #HoneYstLabellingNow !
