I 've a book from the 1912 that teaches you how to play piano, Its intended for teachers , not students and it is a translation from the original one (english to spanish; The best music of the world philharmonic edition) and in this book there is a page which explain tempo markings and meaning of some common words that can appear in scores such as MODERATO. The book says that when moderato is after a tempo ex; allegro, andante presto, etc. it means "Gradually getting to the tempo" (rough translation) so in my opinion Gleen did justice to the allegro moderato , every other performance i've heard is very fast at the beginning.... edit: some grammar mistakes :B
Very very interesting recording... This is a really rare Glenn Gould... For family reason or not, even if this music was not in his mood, was not in his standard, even if it appears so strange he played it, well, this is a great and perfect performance! In my opinion, there are no better ways to play this sonata! Like a God, Glenn Gould makes it more beautiful...
I didn't even know he did this (any Grieg at all). Lovely.
Beautiful!
