Il cielo in una stanza entra al settimo posto nell'estate 1960 e sale fino al primo, rimanendo in classifica fino all'inizio dell'anno successivo.
La canzone viene proposta a Mina da un giovane Mogol, ma lei non sembra convinta; in effetti il brano era già stato rifiutato da altre interpreti, tra cui Jula De Palma e Miranda Martino. L'autore, Gino Paoli (che non compare nei credits perché non ancora iscritto alla SIAE), la fa ascoltare a Mina al pianoforte e alla fine l'artista la incide più per le pressioni dei discografici che per sua convinzione.
Assistiamo così alla prima delle mille metamorfosi di Mina: l'urlatrice e interprete di cover di brani rock si trasforma in musa della canzone d'autore. Accompagnata dall’orchestra di Tony De Vita, la sua versione è indimenticabile e insuperabile (Italdisc MH 61, accoppiata con La notte di Reverberi-Franchi). L’ouverture e l’inciso col crescendo di violini sono ancor oggi davvero straordinari.
Il cielo in una stanza è diventato un classico della canzone italiana, e conta decine di versioni, tra cui quattro dello stesso Paoli: una incisa per la Ricordi con un piccolo gruppo, una seconda per la RCA con l'orchestra di Ennio Morricone, una terza registrata per la Durium con l'accompagnamento di un vero organo da chiesa nel 1971 (la partitura per organo era di Giampiero Boneschi), una quarta, arrangiata da Peppe Vessicchio con tastiere elettroniche e un intrigante sax soprano, che è quella che Gino esegue ancor oggi nei concerti dal vivo.
Mina intanto invia in giro per il mondo le versioni in lingua inglese (The World We Love In, poi ricantata anche da Connie Francis), spagnola (El cielo en casa), tedesca (Wenn Du an Wunder glaubst), francese.
Storicamente Mina è stata la prima interprete della canzone e, a giudicare dal successo di pubblico e di critica ottenuto nell'immediato ma anche successivamente, la sua versione rappresenta un punto di riferimento e paragone per tutta la musica leggera italiana e in particolare per la canzone d'autore.
Esiste in due edizioni diverse, entrambe del 1960 e sempre arrangiate da Tony De Vita che con la sua orchestra accompagna Mina. In ordine cronologico la prima ha durata 1:59 e la seconda 2:54.
La più lunga, denominata extended, si trova sul singolo "Il cielo in una stanza/Stranger Boy" pubblicato nel 1965 e nelle raccolte su CD Mina Gold (1998) e Ritratto: I singoli Vol. 1 (2010). A parte questi supporti, tutti gli altri utilizzano la versione corta.
Le immagini si riferiscono al film "Io bacio tu baci" musicarello del 1961, per la regia di Piero Vivarelli.

Yes the scene was mesmerizing. That was probably the best scene from an amazing series. Utterly beautiful production design with great acting from the stellar cast. It was like being in Italy without being there. Never expected to see such an artistic series from Netflix.

I'm an English musician living in Italy and have entertained people in nightclubs, restaurants, ski resorts, cruises for some years. When I started playing here back in 1978, a local pianist at Il Notaio restaurant/pianobar in downtown Bologna gave me a list of top Italian songs. He told me: "Charles se vuoi fare il pianista di piano bar in Italia, devi essere in grado di interpretare queste canzoni". Il Cielo in una Stanza was top of the list and I've enjoyed singing and playing it (despite my English accent) ever since! Fabulous song and Mina's performance is spot on.

I live and grew in the UK and my parents are from Trinidad & Tobago, but this song speaks to my heart. To have such an expression of love in real life, would be a dream come true. I hope we all find this kind of love before we leave this earth. For that would be tragic not to experience while we are here.
I mean this is beautiful but she didn't write this song, Gino Paoli did and he was inspired by a night in a bordello. But the words are very poetic and sweet and are often attributed to a very platonic love kind of song.

Finally found this song! I heard it first a few years ago in Rome, a woman singing in a plaza, and fell in love with the song ❤ then Ripley, and here I am!
Have you seen the new Netflix version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (an eight-part series called "Ripley" starring Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning)? The second episode includes a miraculous musical moment when the actress Hildegarde De Stefano sings two minutes of "Il cielo in una stanza" as she descends a staircase in a crumbling cantina. I didn't know anything about Mina or this song before I saw it incorporated in this remarkable teleplay, and was excited to find this video from 1960. (Also surprised to see exactly how much the filmmakers relied on this same video to create a careful copy of Mina in her heyday: similar hair, similar hand gestures, similar way the costume collar drapes to expose the upper back, even the same beauty mark.) Bravissima!

questa secondo me è la piu'bella interpretazione della grande MINA..Quando io per la prima volta l'ascoltai cantata da Gino Paoli,autore della canzone in questione, questa non mi fece nè caldo ne' freddo,cioè mi lascio' del tutto indifferente; Ma quando un annetto dopo in una trasmissione serale l'ascoltai cantata da MINA.mi sembro' che le porte musicali del paradiso improvvisamente si fossero aperte ,e il giorno dopo mi precipitai in un negozio musicale per comprare il relativo 45 giri in vinile per poi sentirla fino a consumare il disco.....
