  • The Wandering DMs tackle employment in D&D. Do adventurers need day jobs? Does starting a business or pursuing a craft undermine the motiviation to go out treasure hunting? What of systems that define prior careers as part of characgter creation? It's time for Dan and Paul to get to work!
Employment is a relationship between two parties regulating the provision of paid labour services. Usually based on a contract, one party, the employer, which might be a corporation, a not-for-profit organization, a co-operative, or any other entity, pays the other, the employee, in return for carrying out assigned work. Employees work in return for wages, which can be paid on the basis of an hourly rate, by piecework or an annual salary, depending on the type of work an employee does, the prevailing conditions of the sector and the bargaining power between the parties.
Researchers have also explored the relationship between employment and illicit activities. Using evidence from Africa, a research team found that a program for Liberian ex-fighters reduced work hours on illicit activities. The employment program also reduced interest in mercenary work in nearby wars. The study concludes that while the use of capital inputs or cash payments for peaceful work created a reduction in illicit activities, the impact of training alone is rather low.

Really dig the idea of failed careers. My players don't seek employment but they do enjoy starting side businesses for which the interested players do some occasional decision making off screen

4:00- This is something The Nightmares Underneath builds right into character generation - PCs, adventurers in general, are assumed to be UNABLE to hold down a regular job for some reason, and in character gen you must define what that is. The game also provides tables to randomly determine a reason.

And in reference to Dan's "unfortunately, peace has come to the land", that was part of the premise for my last campaign. A war had just ended, leaving that as a reason some PCs were at loose ends and also a reason why hirelings were available and inexpensive.

Around minute 14: the stick with the dead rats is not just your most recent catch, it's advertising. Rat catchers would walk around with their stick over their shoulder as a testimonial for their work so people would know to hire them.

The discussion of sci-fi skill based systems and medieval class-based actually makes the hybrid career system in WFR make sense chronologically, as the Old World is sort of renaissance/early modern. 😄
I think that system works better in an urban campaign where the expectation isn't that you're playing out the majority of the characters' day to day lives, as full time adventurers. But rather ones where they do hold down unrelated jobs and come together occasionally for adventures. Similarly to how, say, knights in Pendragon have one or two adventures a year but each session also has solo domain play in the winter phase and the PCs aren't expected to be together all the time.
