      Back about 1993 I installed a Bell and Howell motion security light with two 150 watt flood lights above the garage door. It's now 2018, unit still functions fine and both tungsten flood lamps are still burning brightly when motion is detected. I never expected it to last this long and survive 25 years of cold winters and triple digit heat summers but not only did the electronics survive, so did the old flood lamps. Too bad my new bathroom and kitchen faucets can't survive that long, after 5 years they fall apart, cheap junk except for the price.

    Hey I have a question, we just had a severe wind storm which knocked a few of our trees down and I noticed one of our spotlight bulbs were out. First, I tried tightening it, just to make sure it wasn't loose, then unscrewed the bulb a little and it came on, so I tightened it and it went out. I decided to unscrew it a little and just leave it since its working. So, why is this occurring? Is the bulb ready to go? Just wondering...:-) I don't want my house to burn down if it's shorting out or something. I already had to previous mishaps with our wood stove, and got to now our local fire dept. really well...;-) (I personally clean the chimney myself now...:-) )

    Awesome video! Though I am subscribed through my other YT account, I was wondering. How would I add a 3rd (third) bulb so that way that 3rd bulb comes on at the time as the original other two bulbs; onto that same fixture? In other words, the wiring. I know that H, N, G come from the box, but how would I add the third bulb? Can you show us?

    I dunno if its a stupid question as I’m still new to electrical, but where is the ground wire? I want replace my exterior motion sensor light, but my house is old and ungrounded and everything else I read for my interior electrical work (replaced some plugs and added motion sensor light to closet) had me connecting the ground to the brass screw.
    Is grounding not a thing for exterior stuff?
    Big fan. Thanks for answering if you see this.

    I’ve got a farmhouse from 1840 with vinyl siding and plaster walls a-plenty. I want to add lights and security cameras but the ideal locations don’t exactly have a junction box nearby. Are there cleaner ways of installing new boxes on the external walls without tearing out the inside? Seems my best bet would be to either run pipe to the location or try to find an outlet on an inside wall near where I want the device outside. That’s quite limited. But maybe I could fish a wire from the attic down through the wall to a location I open up and place a box in?

      Hi Jason I use portable cameras that have 2 week long lasting rechargeable batteries. you screw up the magnetic base and then bam. instant security footage and works on motion sensor. Cheers!

    You said, jokingly, "Looks good from the street, right?" Reminds me of an anecdote: a local carpenter was working on a house when the owner went out to check on his progress. He saw immediately that the carpenter was not concerned about things like square, level or plumb, so he called the carpenter on it. Th carpenter replied, "That' s alright, bye, you can't see it from the road." Enjoyed the vid, as usual. Thanks.

    Hi Jeff! It's Kim again! (aka, Femineity)
    I was wondering about something? Is it relatively the same process to replace an indoor light fixture with a motion sensor light? I want to put one in my pantry. There isn't any light switch. The current (non-working) one has a pull-chain which I find to be problematic. So I thought, why not just replace it with a motion sensor type lighting fixture! Would you suggest I do as you've done here with your exterior light fixture or are there more steps I need to perform? I remembered seeing a brand named 'Patriot' that has a disk-like, flush mount one. The current one I have up is just a flush mount porcelain looking type fixture with a light bulb screwed into it and a chain dangling down.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Kim, the wiring in your current light should be pretty straight forward. black to black and white to white. turn off the breaker first and check for function before screwing to the ceiling box. Just in case your connection is bad , it will save you a ton of time. Have you ever done electrical before?

    • @femineity
      @femineity 6 лет назад

      Hi Jeff! Thanks for coming to my 'Question' rescue once again! I greatly appreciate it! To answer your question, no, I've never done any sort of electrical work before. I was blessed with a home that is in dire need of some pretty major repairs and updates. It's a long story but although I've been able to have a few things done by those who actually have the know-how, it's been pretty expensive so I came to the conclusion that it's time I learn to do some things myself. That's the reason I'm so happy to have found your channel! I know there are projects that I'll need to hire a professional to handle but your channel gives me the confidence to do things I was too afraid to attempt on my own before! It's just really important that I learn the correct way because I can't afford to be wasteful. I will follow your (generously given) instructions above as well as follow your previously given suggestions to read the instructions first before attempting this project! It's just so great to have your personal feedback as well as your great instructional videos as a guide, so once again, Jeff, thank you!! I really appreciate your help!

    Thanks for the vid!
    Hey, can I take the existing 2 wires that are at my flood light (my house is set up just like this one) and put a receptacle there instead? It's for a new security camera to have it's power as it's a plug in type camera only. But the catcher is- somehow still hard-wire my new flood lights? (or convert the new hard-wire type motion sensor flood light kit to "plug in style" if I can't still hard wire it, after converting those 2 existing house wires to a plug in receptacle, or something similar, to plug in the camera?
    The new camera is goes right next to where flood light goes, up on facial, but camera has to be plugged in.
    I got a 1987 built house as well! My flood light is wired up there just like on the house in this vid. And it also goes to a switch inside house, by front door.
    Btw, liked ur new motion sensor flood lights so much that I went and got a new flood light kit just like yours from our Home Depot!
    Anyway, thanks for any info.
    Oh yea, if theres a better way to accomplish this plug in only camera and the new hard wire flood light kit, like a junction box or something else up there, what would you suggest?
    And it's right in the front of the house! So trying to do it "right", make it look kind of professional and also be safe. At least that's what I was hoping to do. Maybe 2 out of 3 aint bad? Thanks!

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  5 лет назад +1

      you could switch it to a plug but it will not have constant power. It will be active only when thew switch is on.

    I installed almost the same fixture, pretty basic, but - it's set properly for on at night, 10 min, and it doesn't completely shut off, it's very dim, when motion is sensed the lights come on fully. The fixture was several years old, but new in the box (its been stored in the garage), I put LED bulbs in it, would that be a problem?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  4 года назад +1

      in many cases led bulbs can operate on dimmers which restrict the current to the bulb. it might work the same with your old fixture. Cheers!

    • @Airfun101
      @Airfun101 4 года назад

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY These bulbs weren't dimmable, but do these fixtures always draw current? It seems like the bulbs operate on such low current it shows as barely on where another bulb wouldn't get enough to operate (grasping at straws!)

    Good video, as usual! I have been looking high and low for a way to retrofit motion sensors to an existing fixture. I dont want to use motion bulbs. Isn't there a base which can be inserted between the wall and fixture prodiving the motion sensing switch functionality? It's a cabin, I am not a great decorator, hate shopping, the existing lights look great, and ones in a similar rustic design start at C$175 per fixture, and are probably made in a communist sweatshop somewhere and wont last 5 years before I have to buy them all over again.
    I would rather just buy a supply of motion sensor bases, install them, and keep a half dozen in reserve for when they will inevitably go on the fritz, since they will also be made in a communist slave labor sweatshop, but sold as thoughtfully sourced item.
