If you put Porom's bow in her left hand with Holy Arrows, she can 1 hit any Zombie type easily. I give the Dancing Dagger from Mist Village to Palom. Use it as an item and it does solid damage.
since you mentioned the other versions of the game, I think it would be cool to see which remakes of RPGs you think are better than the originals, if any! Personally I loved the 3D remake of FF4. The Steam one. I heard the DS version was super hard so I played it on the PC instead haha. I also really enjoyed the DS FF3.
edge was better than that, his high speed meant that he could attack more often, so over the course of a battle he does the most damage among physical attackers.
How can you rank Edge lower than Yang? He can attack from the back row without losing damage, cast spells, steal, has better weapons, etc... And Edward better than FuSoYa??? Come on dude.
This is interesting because if you consider what abilities you can get after they die, fusoyah phoenix, edward salve. and twins dualcast make them super important in hard mode
David. You're clearly forgetting the actual most useless character in the entire game. Baigan. He joins your party for about 15 seconds once you come back from Serpent Road. You never get to use him, and he betrays you. WINNER!!
And Cecil want to leave Rosa and Ridya in earth. Can you imagine how hard the last dungeon would be only with a paladin, a dragoon and a spoony ninja? XD
@Emanuel :3 well, sort of it was going to be a Paladin,a Dragoon,a Spoony Ninja,FuSoYa and Golbez. Not bad at all, i wold change rosa for Golbez, but never Rydia!
I know it late to respond to this but technically you right and wrong as Cecil does know white magic and possible get lot of MP if you give him Soma drop so really it semi hard long term.
That's the problem with many characters in the game. They seem to exist at a fixed level, no matter how much, or how little (in the case of Tellah) grinding you've done up to that point.
The main thing draw of Edge is his versatile nature. Him being able to steal, nuke for elemental damage, free escape, cast blink on himself, equip tons of diffrent weapons give you a swiss army knife. To make him really good you need to learn what weapons hurt creature types (mage masher on mages, Lighting Claws on machines, Fairy Claws on giants, etc.) as when you hit a creature type weakness you do 4x damage meaning Edge even at lower levels can hit for between 1500 - 3500 damage with his basic attack far outclassing Cecil and Kain who are hitting for maybe a little over 1000 or 1500 with Jump, and even better he can do it from the back row by using a boomerang in his right hand as that makes all his attacks long range so he takes far less damage
@@Aydren1 Being a fan of Shadow from FFVI, I had high hopes for Edge. Not too disappointed, but could've done better. Edge's personality is a complete 180 from the typical ninja, closer to Yuffie but with touches of the Figaro brothers, especially Sabin. His shock of white hair truly defines him, and I personally think that is actually his natural color, much like Ritz from FFT Advance. Even though his training in the ways of shinobi isn't complete (as evidenced by his low join level and chance of being damaged when Stealing, as well as his limited Jutsu pool until fighting Rubicante), his mastery of both ninja and samurai blades (his Kunai starting weapon and his exclusive Ashura, long used by Samurai in FF as a katana), as well as the Claws, long used by Monks such as Yang, Tifa, and Sabin, set him apart in versatility. His high Agility allows for quick strikes, and his powerful Flood jutsu makes him dangerous on the battlefield. If he had access to Evasion boosting equipment (one setup for Shadow in FFVI makes him hit 73% Evasion, and FFVIA's bugfixes make this quite viable) Edge would be terrifyingly powerful.
This reminds me how Final Fantasy 4 was the first one that really fleshed out with the characters with personality and history. I remember when Porom and Polom met Tellah showing that he had a little history as a magician
the funny thing that i noticed though, at least on the PC version on steam, his MP pool is not forever locked at 90 if you grind his level high enough. While it does take a pretty long time do and quite pointless storywise, he did end up with 600+ MP pool by the time I got him to lvl 99
Thanks for the fun video, David. Rosa, Rydia, and yang are among my favorite characters in the series. In later versions where you can choose your final party, Yang was ALWAYS swapped in for edge.
Lol I really did think "Dead-ward" would have been last. He was better in the remakes, especially with the Dragon Harp. But he's still a "spoony bard"!
Edward is designed to be hated! I totally agree with the vid that he can be kinda useful if you use him cautiously. But that's not exactly a strong endorsement, I admit ;)
I agree about Rydia, Rosa, Cecil, Kain, in that order. I definitely think FuSoYa is the least useful, and the least interesting as a character. He's just Tellah but from the Moon, and his only utility is as a second Wall caster against Bahamut.
Kain's jump command has saved me a number of times. He can't be targeted, of course, when he's in the air. Which is perfect for those big hits, effectively reducing the damage control I've gotta do. He's number one for me!
agreed, its the best spell for a long time, no resistances to it, very high base power, cheaper than most spells for a long time and available when Rydia rejoins you.
FF4 was a really unique Final Fantasy when it came to characters and jobs. It's the only mainline Final Fantasy where you get up to 5 party members. In addition, there is very little customization, either in party composition or what jobs and abilities your characters have. All the other Final Fantasies will at least at some point allow you to customize your party members or your jobs and abilities. FF1 let you choose your 4 party members' jobs; FF2 let you customize magic spells, weapons, and stats; FF3 allowed you to change your characters' jobs; FF5 let you change your characters' jobs and abilities; FF6 allowed you to customize your party and the magic your characters know; FF7 let you customize your party as well as their abilities; FF8 let you customize your party and the spells they know, as well as their stats; FF9 let you customize your party and gave some freedom to what abilities you wanted your characters know; FF10 let you customize your party and their abilities and stats on the Sphere Grid; FF12, well, I never played FF12; FF13 let you customize your party. Never played FF15. Anyway, FF4 involves a lot of characters coming and going without ever letting you pick your party--unlike every other Final Fantasy. When I played it as a kid, it seemed the composition of your final party was almost an accident, it was just the people who were able and willing to keep fighting. Now, earlier Final Fantasies would allow an additional guest character to accompany your party, but they were pretty clearly marked as temporary and you often couldn't control them. But in FF4, I had no idea who was going to be in the final party other than Cecil. At the same time, FF4 is also unique in the near complete lack of customization of your party. Your jobs and commands are set, with only a couple changes occurring as part of the story (Cecil changing to a Paladin, Rydia losing White Magic). Except for summon magic, the magic each character can learn is set in stone, and is either known when the character joins the party, learned at a specific level, or learned at a specific point in the story. Learning magic when you gain a level seems to have only been something that was done elsewhere in FF6, and only for 2 characters and a limited range of spells.
Am currently playing the PSP version, stuck in the last dungeon because, you know, Zeromus is literally a superboss. And now am wondering which characters i should pick for that final battle !
@@thelightknight8165 Any group, as long as you have a white mage, can beat Zeromus. Your party should be at least level 52-56 for him, otherwise you may be underleveled. Another tip, don't use black magic on him, because he counters it with Flare. Basically if you're not surviving his Big Bang attack, you are underleveled. Once you are surviving it, Curaja should be able to heal off all the damage. Kain is decent to have as with the Jump command you might get lucky and dodge the Big Bang with him. While he's in the air he won't receive healing, but when your Curaja is only split between 4 characters it will heal them for more. You will need to beat Zeromus at least 2 times to unlock everything in the bonus dungeon. Basically, you need to beat him with each character, but Palom or Porom will do for their part (so pick Porom and leave Palom behind on one of your runs).
In the original SNES version, Edge can equip Yang's claws. If you equip a katana and a claw with appropriate elemental weakness, he becomes a hidden powerhouse. Try equipping Lit claw in Giant of Babil, along with Moonring, and watch the enemies melt away!
Edward is easily the worst. Cid helps alot in the magnetic cave. FuSoYa can heal or attack, and had all spells. Edge had blink, which helps alot... But ya Rosa deserves all the praise.👍
Yes Cid helps a lot in the cave but remember it is Edward that dispels the dark elves magnetic field, even if Edward could join you in that battle I know he could be of use anyway especially with his charm harp.
Rydia! When Golbez 'calls' his dragon to kill the party, she shows up outta nowhere and lays the smackdown, saving the team from utter defeat and Golbez/Zemus winning it all. That moment still gives me goosebumps 30 years later! As a kid I squealed with joy the first time. Now anytime I play an RPG that has character creator, my initial character is always a green-haired black mage named Rydia.
Which ironically ends up being the only time you fight Golbez...I always thought that (too few fights with Golbez) was the *only* major weakness of the game, which is my favorite of all time.
Same. I would have made a real fight against him when Tellah fights him on auto that ends with Tellah casting Meteo, and another one right after the Four Fiends and CPU in the Giant.@@Clad_in_Darkness_Gaming
I always hear Rosa is not that great and it makes me sad and i never understood cause Rosa is probably one of my favorite FF characters. So its good to see her get some well deserved recognition. She gave us heals, she gave us versatility, she gave us looks!
You broke my heart, Edge was my favorite. I do agree that Rosa and Rydia are the true MVP’s though. When you go to take the whale to the moon for the final voyage and Cecil pulls the tough guy move and tried to “protect the women” by not letting them come because it was too dangerous, LOL. I remember screaming at my tv as a young kid telling him that we definitely need them because of how dangerous it was going to be!!! Party would of never made it past the final trail without them.
LOL Same. I couldn't believe he was throwing the most irreplaceable members away. I wouldn't have wanted to even run around on the moon's surface with just the three musketeers.
I never had that many problems with Edge, although I agree that his ninja arts magic attacks suck. However his throw ability can really do big damage to the bosses with the shurikens and weapons that you unequip from Cecil, Kain and Edge.
I remember really liking Tellah because even with his low stats his lvl 3 spells deal absurd damage and you can use osmose to restore mp in between each cast.
CID is a bit better in the DS version where he gets the Upgrade ability, letting you use all those one-use battle items you never bother with to give his weapon elemental damage or status effects, but yeah, he always felt like a filler party member.
I have never, ever heard of a dragoon being referred to as a tank. They are purely a damage-dealing class. "Kain can just attack and jump, he's very one-note." BECAUSE HE'S A DAMAGE DEALER.
Monks are my favorite class in any Final Fantasy, and I gotta agree with you, Yang would have carried the team even harder if you could swap him out for Edge.
If you use the right set up, Edge becomes literally unkillable late game. Murasame+Full Moon+Ribbon+Ninja armor+Protect Ring=99% evasion, twice as fast as everyone but Kain, damage on par with Cecil, back row full damage, magic defense comparable to Rosa, throw elemental damage. The remakes break him even more with the new equipment, but that was enough to cement it for me. Still, steal was always useless in that game, and the ninjitsu was opportunistic at best. I have solo'ed the end game with Cecil, Rydia, and Edge....never was able to do it with Rosa. It is my favorite game in the series and the first RPG I ever played back when I was five, spawning a 26 year long love for the franchise....
Good point about the equipment combination, but all of those items on him undermines the other characters defense/evasion/elemental resistance/etc. That is a great combo, though.
@Vegesther Well, in addition to the 2 Ribbons that you find in the Lunar Caves, you can also get Ribbons as (very) rare drops from either the Bog Witches in the Sylph Caves or the Dark Sages in the Lunar Caves or Bahamut's Cave, so it is possible to get more Ribbons as long as you're willing to grind for them.
@Vegesther True. The good thing regarding the final boss was how it was almost entirely magic based, so with her high stats there I never had a problem with keeping her alive. At least you could get more Protect Rings from the Ahrimans if you wanted to, but I never went out of my way to do that. Now, in the remakes with party swapping, Zeromus absolutely wrecks everyone aside from the main party....all so I can do obnoxious dungeons to get items that barely change my already nearly maxed stats. I wish they had thought more about that.
@@raf7550 Oh yeah, I forgot about that. My son found that one out for me....he was playing on the advanced emulator I have for it (because I have patience issues....) and he won one. I nearly had a stroke.
I’m replaying FFIV (PSP version) and Tellah really got on my nerves when he rejoined my party the 2nd time. That 90 MP cap and his other stats getting weaker as he leveled up was painful. I was so glad when he finally left my party.
I recently stumbled upon this channel. I really like these "ranked party member" videos as well as your top 10 over powered party member videos. Hope to see more!
Wait, what was that ps1-esc thing in the outro? Was that like a ffiv anniversary edition or something? Ik 1 2 5 and 6 got on ps1 bu lt did 4 do it too?
I actually liked Edge. Maybe it's because of my leveling habits in this game, but Rydia always dies after the first big bang when I fight Zeromus so I usually have to leave her dead since it's practically a waste of a turn reviving her. Don't get me wrong. I like Rydia. It's just that I get more use out of Edge in the final battle since he doesn't die as quickly. Maybe I still have a lot to learn despite FF4 being my favorite of the FF games.
You see, the reason why using Meteo killed Tellah and why people in the game kept saying it was too dangerous for him to use was because he only has 90 MP, and that isn't enough points to actually cast the spell. So, he broke the natural law of magic. XD
The problem is that you get it one floor before the Magus sisters, and then once you beat them Cid leaves the party pretty much immediately afterwards.
I think the two you really underrated are Tellah and Edge. Edge does require some min-maxing to get the full potential out of, but there's a reason he's the character (last I saw) used for glitchless speed runs. Tellah has an MP problem and bad stats, this is true, and by the end of his tenue you're starting to feel his lack of statistical acumen, but after Cecil's class change he's a beast simply because he has access to those high level spells way before they're "supposed" to be there. He one shots Cagnazzo and trashes difficult normal encounters with Bio and 3rd level spells. MP can be pretty easily dealt with either with a couple Ethers (they're not THAT rare and camp sites are pretty common) or Osmose on the weaker encounters. It's true that, with equivalent spells both Palom and Rydia (and Fusoya, IIRC) blow him out of the water, but he's a big fish in a small pond and one of the most valuable characters in the game while he's in the party. But yeah Cecil,Rosa, Rydia are great. and would be my top three as well.
Edge can use claws, y'know? if you're willing to micromanage his weapons a bit no other character can match him in speed and damage. He also has a dirt cheap image spell, which combined with his speed, mean he'll never take a physical strike ever unless you're being lazy or just holding A through everything. He should easily be top dog here lol rest of the list is pretty spot on in terms of order.
FuSoYa exists for one sole reason when he is in your party. You want to go and unlock the Bahamut summon for Rydia while he is there. If you do this, you have FuSoYa and Rosa to cast Wall before the timer goes down.
Edge does seem to die super easily, but he has one saving grace - Throw. As long as money is no object to you (should have plenty of it at the endgame), stock up on Shurikens and Throw like nobody's business. If inventory space is an issue, just carry extras in Fat Choco and keep a couple Whistles handy. : )
my all time favorite game. ive played snes ps1 ds and psp versions lol. even on board for a ps5 full 3d remake lol. great analysis on the characters!!!! love the channel!
Same here. I've played all versions of it and this vid makes me wanna replay again (for the umpteenth time). Other games may be objectively better, but this game is easily my all-time favorite.
What is that video clip at the end of this video? I have never seen that animation of FFIV before. Is it the preview cutscene that plays before you press Start in some version of the game?
It’s the god awful FMV shown on the PS1 version of the game. Rumor has it that square didn’t even want to release the game in America because they were so embarrassed by the cut scene.
@@davidvinc And yet.... it's better than the chibi phone port graphics that they would later happily release on multiple platforms. How times have changed, mmm? Too bad we couldn't have gotten the PSP version on PC instead.
My friends and I used to argue over this and 6 and which was better. I always loved 4 and Yang is amazing. Kick just made him a one man wrecking crew. Also, Edward kind of grew on me.
Kain actually didn't add very much to my party when he comes back for endgame. Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, and Edge worked really well and all filled a nice role. It felt like having a good party from Final Fantasy 1. The Kain comes back and is basically just a physical attacker who is weaker than Cecil, slower than Edge, and doesn't have a useful gimmick like magic or dual wielding. He's just there, adding a thousand physical damage. It threw off my super tight team rhythm when he first joined. FuSoYa is similar, but he saves Rosa MP and can throw on another Haste or Slow or even Stop in desperation mode. Note: this experience is from the GBA version
Edward, Rosa, Rydia, Yang, Choose you're favorite for number 5. Edward literally becomes the best character in the game in After years. You just need to get his best gear then laugh in his overpower
The truth is however that Edge is a real beast in this game. He comes already equipped with the Green Beret and Black Belt which grant him +10 STR and +10 CON, making him dish out and tank really good in the beginning. The mistake that many make is to "upgrade" his equipment according to defense or evasion. This does little to his tanking abilities but kills his offense. Even the Black Garb isn't all that hot. Only +3 AGI is a weak stat boost as are the extra stats of Murasame and Masamune (c'mon - stats!). His final equipment is the worst compared to the rest. But if you stick with the Green Beret, change it for the Black Cowl on levels when higher agility gives a higher damage multiplier, keep the Black Belt until the very first Behemoth battle in the game drops the Power Sash (emulator quick save is your friend) and give him the Giant's Gloves which you can obtain before Edge joins, you have a juggernaut of a character who single-handedly carries you through the mid-game and parts of the late game. Add to this the fact that Edge with claws being bad is a meme. Why? Yang's damage calculation is different from every character in the game which means Yang doesn't need damage from weapons to have attack power. If you equip Edge who has regular damage calculation with two claws he will naturally suck. What happens when you combine a katana/throwing weapon with a claw? Sure your attack damage drops. But you reap elemental weaknesses just like Yang. And with the following set-up Edge has +20 STR AND +20 CON. Green Beret Black Belt Giant's Gloves. As mentioned, tag in the Black Cowl if it augments your multiplier. Then when the Power Sash becomes available his stats from armor change to: Green Beret +5 STR +5 CON Power Sash +15 STR Giant's Gloves +10 STR +10 CON +30 STR +15 CON! THAT'S ALMOST 4 DAMAGE MULTIPLIER FROM ARMOR ALONE! This is the reason why Yang is generally heralded while Edge is being forgotten. They are both ambidextrous, apart from that they are mirrors in the hp, attack power, and damage multiplier department. Yang has high hp and multiplier but low attack damage, Edge is the reverse. FF IV is a game where the damage multiplier defines your offensive potential way more than your attack damage! Edge naturally skews towards more than 200 attack power with Murasame/Masamune/Sasuke's Katana/Mutsunokami but poor strenght kills his damage output. 59 natural strength at level 70 is ridiculous. My aforementioned set-up kills his defense, especially magically. But his supposed late game attire like Genji stuff and the Black Garb only raises his tanking abilities by a small margin while killing his offense. The +20 STR/+30 STR from armor configuration with a katana/throwing weapon and claw for susceptible type appliance is rad baller to the max. Combined with haste and berserk? Unbelievable. Versus Asura with the Kikoichimonji and Mage Masher you say? Edge can end her in 4 hits. Edge becomes the replacement Yang of the game. Throwing weapons (use them in front row, we want max. damage) give him one edge over Yang. Till you get Excalibur, Edge is your main dps character of the final five. Wicked Mask's can eat Masamune+Thunder Claw. I might post more when someone responds to this.
you are100% correct. people don't know how to use him. he is the most damaging character against a single enemy by far. At end game he should be attacking for as much as Cecil or more. his last 2 katanas suck. a claw and fullmoon are better.
God, Rosa was a broken character, Feels like she is the leader of the team. Definitely controls every single battle. Rather than the support she gives, at the last dungeon of the game her damage was greater more than any other character because of the bow killer she carried, as this weapon kills dragons so easily. Thank god Cecil didn't leave her on earth, without her the game would be so hard, she was a whole carry. I agree with your list 100%
Most were spot on. Agree with Cid being hot garbage as Edward not being worse. I'd personally do Rydia > Cecil > Kain > Rosa though. Rosa does paltry damage with her bows, and unless you need healing, that's all she does. Holy is too expensive to use often and you need to save yer MP for healing. She just has too many wasted turns. Kain and Cecil may be physical only, but they always contribute every round. They account for a lot of the damage. Virus is a great spell and Rydia can pretty much always cast it. She also can steal MP to keep the supply up. Flare is also a fast cast, and Bahamut is solid when reflect is an issue. Even if she runs out, she has useful rods to use as items. From the original rod, ice rod, and eventually the Stardust rod, she has good free options (better than Rosa's). She can even heal with Summons. That's why I think she deserves top place.
Edge is nowhere near the worst of the final 5, and maybe even the best character in the game... his speed is insane and with Ninja Shurikens he can be hitting 9999 damage on every turn, instantly - This means he has the highest DPS in the game - it's not even close; he doubles everybody. Even without ninja stars, his speed is so much higher than anybody else, although his attacks don't seem like much, he is outpacing everybody aside Cecil (sometimes) on basic attacks. His Ninjitsu while not incredible, are fantastic for clearing out trash enemies especially when you first get him.. his evasion is also second to none with the ability to case Mirage of himself, making him invincible to hits. He's at least way better than Kain who, I guess people love because Jump = big numbers pop up; but it's so slow and mostly just useful as a defensive ability.
I actually never knew Slow worked on most enemies! I'm so used to the other FF games where status effects never seem to work xD Also, I think one thing that drags down a lot of FFIV's cast is that, for most of them, the only end result of their abilities is "do damage", which isn't bad per se, but it just means the best damage dealer is simply the winner
While I do agree about some of Edge's issues, if you equip a throwing weapon in his other hand you can keep him in the back row and not lose any attack due to a bug, and with the masamune for haste, he is pretty good. Also don't under estimate throw's usefulness.
I just automatically liked because it’s FFIV. I’m probably not even going to split hairs over the verdict. I love the entire cast in spite (and because) of their flaws.
Gotta wonder, if you counted Dark Knight Cecil and Child Rydia as separate characters, where they would fall on the list. Also, pretty spot on list, I loved it!
Rydia is a great character, I can agree with that, she goes through so many emotional hurdles to help her allies, even the one that killed her mother, and still does after the events of the Leviathan attack she still decided once she was at her prime she'd go straight to help Cecil again, never forgetting the father figure she had And ultimately saving him and basically everyone else in the process. Don't let the skimpy garb fool you she's not a two dimensional fan service character.
i like your videos david but man you have such a soft quiet voice i have to turn my speaker knob to minimum 50% to even hear you (yes volume control is at 100%) while almost any other YT vid im good at between 15-25%. Even at 50% its still quiet, i wish you would turn the input up when recording :(. aside from that , you have some great, fun vids!
CId: This guy isn't bad. He can take on those strong Ogres in the Magnetic Cave thanks to his big HP and damage. Replace him with Edward in that cave and Edward will get killed by them easily. Replace Edward with Cid in the Antlion cave and Cid will be broken. Edge: So many people thinks he's bad when he's better than Rydia in the Zeromus fight. Many people recommend to keep her dead in that fight. This has led me to not bother leveling her up at all in the PS1 version. And with her dead is helps Edge level up quicker and catch up. It also opens up a backrow slot for him to use Boomerang. I know how to beat the game with a four man party.
Cecil works better with his 3D spellset. Raise, Protect, and Shell give him a helluva lot more utility - especially since damage reduction magic is pretty much required in that version and those two can be multitargeted.
Feel Edge us underrated. If you do the weapon duplication glitch, his throw attack becomes the best reliable physical attack in the game. Even without duplicating, he's generally better than Kain in the final battle because you can throw every weapon you have. Late game, his smoke ability really helps with the grind and random encounters (his speed also makes casting it faster than the exit spells). Stealing is a bit underwhelming in FF4, though.
Greatly undereatimating Tellah. He will end pretty much every random encounter with a single spell. Yeah, his MP sucks, but I defy you to say his mere presence doesn't make Cagnazzo a joke. As for FuSoYa, the spells you should be using on the CPU ignore wall anyway.
Strong support for Rosa. Gotta say I surprised you put her there but you backed it up. My issue is that with the American release, it was so easy, I didn't need to explore her spells much. Cure, Heal, White, Float, Wall. That's all I used. But in the harder re-releases and JP version she has much more utility.

since you mentioned the other versions of the game, I think it would be cool to see which remakes of RPGs you think are better than the originals, if any!

Edges problem really is that he starts off 10-15 levels below the rest of the endgame party when you get him and never really recovers.
Hes only under leveled if you grind too many levels and take any challenge out of the game
@@TeamPaul17 Characters are always introduced at a fixed level. They only vary based on your current level when they return.
The Palom part sounds like it was written _by_ Palom
Glad to see someone gives Rosa the love and respect she deserves
.....How about Cecil? 😁
@@EveliinaN97 can't forget Kain either ;)
I have Rosa-colored glasses.
...eh?
Lmao.
Tellah's stats actually go down when he levels up.
Yeah, was gonna post this. It was nice though that they created a "lore" reason, him getting older (leveling up) so he gets weaker.
Iirc, it's only his strength, meaning his melee sucks more and more as time goes on, which is understandable
@@akun50 Vitality too, bottoming out at 1.
the funny thing that i noticed though, at least on the PC version on steam, his MP pool is not forever locked at 90 if you grind his level high enough. While it does take a pretty long time do and quite pointless storywise, he did end up with 600+ MP pool by the time I got him to lvl 99
Yep getting old isn’t fun. His story is so sad
I think Rydia is the best character followed by Rosa, Cecil and Kain.
The worst for me is easily Tellah, followed by Edward and Cid
I agree about Rydia, Rosa, Cecil, Kain, in that order. I definitely think FuSoYa is the least useful, and the least interesting as a character. He's just Tellah but from the Moon, and his only utility is as a second Wall caster against Bahamut.
Kain's jump command has saved me a number of times. He can't be targeted, of course, when he's in the air. Which is perfect for those big hits, effectively reducing the damage control I've gotta do. He's number one for me!
Totally agree!
Same! The last time I played this (some years ago) I only survived the final battle 'cause homey had jumped during every Big Bang
Agreed if you get it out fast enough in when it was call Final Fantasy 2 for the SNES he can live in the fight with Golbez when Rydia shows up.
+1 on your appraisal of the Virus spell. I LOVED it. I can't remember how many times its quickness saved me from trap doors in the Sealed Cave.
Bro, just cast reflect on whoever the doors target. They'll just end up killing themselves
agreed, its the best spell for a long time, no resistances to it, very high base power, cheaper than most spells for a long time and available when Rydia rejoins you.
Summoning with Rydia is trash anyway. It takes too long for her to cast anything worthwhilr
fucking loved Virus!
Rydia! Rydia is the best character. Always been my favorite.
She's my third fav. Her, Cecil and Edge by character feel like the strongest heros.
Love your lists. FFIV and VI are two of my faves and I've loved the vids. Would love to see a FF5 job ranking from you!
I would like to see this list done with the GBA/PSP version considerations.
After beating this game hundreds? of times, I never knew this! Can't wait to try it.
Knives too. The Mute knife isn't just for causing mute, it also does massive damage to mage enemies if he has a stronger weapon in his other hand.
in the PSP version he can as well if I remember right
Good job with the countdown I love lists like this and also doing it on my favorite final fantasy
Hilariously, iirc, some hackers or dedicated fans grinded Edward to max level and his stats are better than everyone else's.
@@akun50 lol that's crazy 😂
Palom and Porom are worse imo. But more likeable.
Rydia's saving grave is on par with Celes's suicide as far as formative early gaming experience goes.
Which ironically ends up being the only time you fight Golbez...I always thought that (too few fights with Golbez) was the *only* major weakness of the game, which is my favorite of all time.
@@willchurch8376I wish there was more fights with Golbez. He’s my favorite character
Plus once you get a solid end game bow and have edge steal a ton of Artemis arrows, she is a solid fighter as well.
Rosa with artemis arrows can mow down dragons on the moon.
Yeah but the DS version is garbage
@@leargamma4912 harder doesn't mean bad, IV ds is very well done and adds a lot of good things
I have never, ever heard of a dragoon being referred to as a tank. They are purely a damage-dealing class.
"Kain can just attack and jump, he's very one-note."
BECAUSE HE'S A DAMAGE DEALER.
Exactly. He is my favorite character and he is extremely good if you know how to min-max his gear.
@Vegesther
Well, in addition to the 2 Ribbons that you find in the Lunar Caves, you can also get Ribbons as (very) rare drops from either the Bog Witches in the Sylph Caves or the Dark Sages in the Lunar Caves or Bahamut's Cave, so it is possible to get more Ribbons as long as you're willing to grind for them.
Yes, FF 4 + crono trigger on FF Chronicles PS1
The bomb dot com, huh? That gave me a chuckle.
Edge is awesome
You see, the reason why using Meteo killed Tellah and why people in the game kept saying it was too dangerous for him to use was because he only has 90 MP, and that isn't enough points to actually cast the spell. So, he broke the natural law of magic. XD
Did Tellah actually die? I thought he came back like everyone else
Lol, you finally mentioned Cid's Earth Hammer. Using it as an item was always awesome
The problem is that you get it one floor before the Magus sisters, and then once you beat them Cid leaves the party pretty much immediately afterwards.
@@davidvinc that is a problem. For some reason I remembered it being a bigger deal. I guess I just thought it was that cool as a kid. 🤷♂️
What does it do?
@@jc.1191 when used as an item it casts Quake. It has unlimited uses, and doesn't cost any MP.
@@NRBourassa Cool. Thanks
You know, the Final Fantasy IV Free Enterprise randomizer actually allows you to have these debates as to what characters to run.
So I learned that Edward isn't actually that bad when playing in other versions where the back row attack damage actually calculates how it should.
You have made quarantine much more enjoyable. Thank you for your videos and uplifting attitude. Stay safe friend
It was fun to see your ranking. I’ve only played through this game once. I remember being especially fond of Cecil
A ranking of Characters of Suikoden 1 and 2 would be amazing
ALL characters ;)
FuSoYa exists for one sole reason when he is in your party. You want to go and unlock the Bahamut summon for Rydia while he is there. If you do this, you have FuSoYa and Rosa to cast Wall before the timer goes down.
Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the tip.

Great video! What version of the game are you playing?
Spot on about Yang and Edge. If I hadn't actually sold stuff I could just use Edge to throw items but Yang is far more useful in that he hits harder
LMAO!!! Thanks for replying, david. I'll go do some searching for it for fun.
@@davidvinc And yet.... it's better than the chibi phone port graphics that they would later happily release on multiple platforms. How times have changed, mmm? Too bad we couldn't have gotten the PSP version on PC instead.

I don't care how bad Cid is considered, I've always loved his character and attitude.
I think Tellah is actually pretty good. Mostly because of his support in the early game.
Which remakes had postgame? I have the ds remake and idt there is any postgame. Is it on like psp or something?

Hey David, you know what would be a fun, If you could create a dream RPG party who would they be?
Yuna and Chrono for sure
I actually thought this was an interesting video from a contextual standpoint, nicely done.
My friends and I used to argue over this and 6 and which was better. I always loved 4 and Yang is amazing. Kick just made him a one man wrecking crew. Also, Edward kind of grew on me.
4 is great but 6 is amazing.
FoSoYa: I have black and white magic.

FoSoYa: But,
Me: REGEN!
Yeah Kain was pretty useless. I'd rather have Yang or Fusoya in the party if there was the choice.
I laughed so hard when you referred to CID as the “Moron “who falls to his doom !! 🤣
Last year I did a solo Cecil run of this game. I'll acknowledge how essential Rosa can be, but It's doable without her
Thanks for Tellah-ing it like it is, David
have you played the after years? just asking cause im currently fighting myself about who to bring into the final parts of the game.
Edward, Rosa, Rydia, Yang, Choose you're favorite for number 5. Edward literally becomes the best character in the game in After years. You just need to get his best gear then laugh in his overpower
3:02 I love how you say Mount Koltz from FF6 instead of Mount Hobbs. So easy to get those generic mountain dungeons mixed up.
My favorite part about Kain is that he leaves the party the most. I also like his battle command that makes him leave more when he jumps away.
Green Beret
Black Belt
Giant's Gloves.
As mentioned, tag in the Black Cowl if it augments your multiplier.
Then when the Power Sash becomes available his stats from armor change to:
Green Beret +5 STR +5 CON
Power Sash +15 STR
Giant's Gloves +10 STR +10 CON
+30 STR +15 CON!
What...you put edge below yang...wtf
Edge is superior to Yang across the board
Can you please do a Final Fantasy 13 and 7 character Tier list!
Could you do this for some of the dragon quest games?
I have been waaaaaaaiting for this episode.
Seeing the title, starting the video and preparing myself for the Cid rant 😂
I actually never knew Slow worked on most enemies! I'm so used to the other FF games where status effects never seem to work xD
Also, I think one thing that drags down a lot of FFIV's cast is that, for most of them, the only end result of their abilities is "do damage", which isn't bad per se, but it just means the best damage dealer is simply the winner
While I do agree about some of Edge's issues, if you equip a throwing weapon in his other hand you can keep him in the back row and not lose any attack due to a bug, and with the masamune for haste, he is pretty good. Also don't under estimate throw's usefulness.
Could you do The After Years? I’d love to see your opinion on that one
Which game/version is the footage from?
I just automatically liked because it’s FFIV. I’m probably not even going to split hairs over the verdict. I love the entire cast in spite (and because) of their flaws.
Same
Gotta wonder, if you counted Dark Knight Cecil and Child Rydia as separate characters, where they would fall on the list.
I like Edge but only because of Dart. You can get easy damage that way.
I love FF4…it’s my favorite of all of them. Excellent video!
i like your videos david but man you have such a soft quiet voice i have to turn my speaker knob to minimum 50% to even hear you (yes volume control is at 100%) while almost any other YT vid im good at between 15-25%. Even at 50% its still quiet, i wish you would turn the input up when recording :(. aside from that , you have some great, fun vids!
I think you're overlooking how useful Cid's defense is at that point in the game.
Ranking every Job is FFV!
For me, the coolest part for Rosa is her learning Holy as her final spell.
Bio is a pretty good spell for a large portion of the game, but towards the end it rarely deals more than 1 damage.
Cecil works better with his 3D spellset. Raise, Protect, and Shell give him a helluva lot more utility - especially since damage reduction magic is pretty much required in that version and those two can be multitargeted.
Anyone have mods for this game that lets you pick what party members you want in your group?
Zombies: Osmose? Oh, you're going to surrender your MP to us? Okay then, sure thing!
But the best party members were all the memes we made along the way.
(P.S. You are officially obligated to rank every single class from FFV now🙃)
Strong support for Rosa. Gotta say I surprised you put her there but you backed it up. My issue is that with the American release, it was so easy, I didn't need to explore her spells much. Cure, Heal, White, Float, Wall. That's all I used. But in the harder re-releases and JP version she has much more utility.
You’re supposed to use Tellah’s MP absorb spell to make up for the 90 MP cap.
Can you do this for final fantasy 4 the after years
