  • Throughout our lives, we tend to get preoccupied with our busy schedules, ignoring the needs of others. It's easy to see someone in need and say a quick prayer for them while going on our way, without giving them any physical or practical help. In this study of Deuteronomy 22-23, Skip Heitzig points out the practical examples Moses gave to the Israelites about loving others.
This teaching is from our series 05 Deuteronomy - 2015 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Albuquerque.

Wow - imagine the backlog on death row if we enforced the principles in verses 22:22-25! Far too many people no longer consider the sanctity of life let alone the sancitity of marriage. And we’re seeing more of the consequences of that everyday. Human culture may have changed but I don’t think God’s viewpoint on the issues of adultery and rape have changed at all. Pastor Skip’s words at the end remind me of the hymn “On Christ the Solid Rock” I stand - all other ground is sinking sand. God bless…

I read something interesting about this passage a while back. Most people would assume that the "sheet" was proof of the daughter's virginity because it proved that she had bled on her wedding night, and while that COULD be the case, it could also mean something else. The Hebrew word for "virgin" doesn't always describe a woman who hasn't had sex. It can also describe a woman who has not had a child. The cloth presented could also be proof of menstrual blood, which meant that she was not with child.

Thanks for this message. Much of chapters 20-23 of Deuteronomy is hard to reconcile, especially in light of our modern 21st century concepts of culture and morality. This helped me to understand the context of these rules much better. God bless!

Bryce Erwin Yeah, there’s nothing morally right about a command to stone a woman if she was raped and didn’t scream for help. That is as bad as Islam.

Not all women bleed when they loose their virginity, some never do. So lm sure the proof would have to be more than the wedding night sheet. Thanks pastor skip, lm learning lost from your video.

Girls were given away in marriage at 12-13 years of age.
Deut 22 23-25 describes a vicious scene of inhumanity.
When someone commands that you beat a teenage girl to death, you need to tell that person that he is immoral, wrong, and simply a horrible individual.
This is what you need to do with this bible passage.
It reflects poorly on the one who demands that people behave this way.
The poor child couldn't cry out while she was raped, so she shall be beaten to death with rocks.
    Horrible.
Stop what you're doing and walk away from that immoral madness.

Erm... Growing two crops in the same field would be Crop rotation. A practice commonly used today to maximize yield and avoid waste. It was actually a pretty revolutionary idea of modern agriculture... Strange that God would say no to that.
Also, the whole hymen thing is an unscientific myth. The membrane is very different for different women. Many are born without one (in which case they don't bleed). In some women the membrane is highly elastic, meaning it never breaks despite repeated intercourse. And in many young girls it breaks during strenuous physical activity that has nothing to do with sex. It is absurd that a God who created the human body wouldn't know this.
Even ignoring the sheer evil and misogyny in treating a woman (more like barely pubescent girl) like the property of her father and husband or rapist, the logistics of it don't make sense. We know the God who is responsible for creation must be omniscient. He would know everything from Molecular biology to Quantum physics and far more than we can comprehend.
And yet the laws in Deuteronomy describe a very simple, medievalist God who apparently didn't even know how a hymen works. Is it real? I'll leave that to you... But to me it seems painfully obvious that those writings did not come from my Maker.

Regarding crop rotation, I don't think God was going about to set up the most advanced civilisation. In fact, you could argue that His laws were sometimes strange, like why can't people wear clothes that have wool and linen mixed together? (Deut 22:11) It's more important to understand God's laws based on His principles when enacting these commands, albeit it can be tricky.
Regarding the hymen thing, it's worth keeping in mind that the physical activities we do today were not something the people in those days would do, so the comparison isn't as simple as that. Furthermore, Deuteronomy 22:17 uses the word evidences, meaning that there's more than just the stained sheet. The idea is that there'll be a thorough checking of the accusation.

I’m certain the God who created ALL things knows better than you, and me. If you want to understand God, which is why are you here I assume, seek Him, and allow Him to reveal Himself to you
