  • We review the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV. This plug-in hybrid can go up to 30 miles of pure EV range and delivers maximum something. It's another CUV commanding almost $53,000k. While it has some unique styling, interior, and drivetrain, the competition is insane. Would you consider this over BMW X1, X3, Audi Q3, Mazda CX90, Lexus NX, Mercedes GLB etc?

    This review really highlights the limitations of the Tonale. Back in the good old days, you could throw Mark's body in the trunk and the self leveling suspension would insure that the police would not ask questions. Now, all you can do is intimidate or let the body ride shotgun 'Weekend at Bernie's' style.

      I'm a technician at an Alfa dealer and the Tonale is MUCH worse than I thought it would be. This video was much too kind and pulled a lot of punches. It absolutely drives like an economy car. I have very little positive things to say about it. Anyone even remotely interested in a Tonale should really just look at a Stelvio.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@andrewweltlich9065 Are you a US or European Alfa technician? What's wrong with an Alfa driving like an economy car, isn't that the whole point of the Mito and Giulietta? Alfa have always had economy cars in their range since the Alfasud. I think it is a misstep from Alfa Romeo to not have a replacement for the Giulietta and to assume the compact hatchback market is dead. A Giulietta with the Tonale upgrades, like the interior, would be a good hatchback IMO (notwithstanding that FCA wasted all that money on the Dodge Dart as a Giulietta sedan which was a flop for some reason, unclear why that was't built as an Alfa).

    • @andrewweltlich9065
      @andrewweltlich9065 11 месяцев назад

      @@TassieLorenzo I'm in the US. Alfa is much different here than in the Europe. Here Alfa is positioned as a premium brand and they charge premium prices. Prior to the launch of the Tonale we only had the Giulia and Stelvio. While those models are a little on the expensive side for what you get, the driving experience makes it worth it. The Tonale drives like a cheap rental car. If it were significantly cheaper, I could forgive it's shortcoming. A Tonale is the same price as a Stelvio, but is worse in almost every way. Maybe in Europe it makes sense, but not here.

    As someone who owns an Alfa Romeo 4C, one thing that you really have to consider when buying an Alfa is the ownership experience. Despite having 0 reliability issues with my vehicle, I still need to take it in for service, and the poor dealership network becomes readily apparent right away. I live in Southern California. There is _one_ Alfa dealership (yes one) for the 3.2 million people that live in my area. As you can expect, they have a huge wait list. It took 2 months to get my routine maintenance done this year, which is crazy. I also have a Honda. I called the local Honda dealer on Tuesday for a weekend drop off (that Saturday) and got it done almost immediately. A stark difference indeed.
    I cannot recommend anyone get an Alfa for this reason alone (dealer network/ownership experience). Yes, the Stelvio/Guilia are significantly more fun to drive than any other car in its class. Yes, they have great performance, and the reliability is the same as any other European brand. Despite this, I guarantee that you will be pulling out your hair as soon as you have to interact with the dealer/service department.

    • @DamianSheesh
      @DamianSheesh 11 месяцев назад +3

      I also live in Socal, and that one dealer also seems incredibly empty at all times. It's bizarre. You can also make the mistake of taking your car to a Dodge dealership which is a whole other experience unto itself. I like my Giulia 'ok'. It drives impeccably as everyone says, but the interior feels last gen to me, and certain things just make me think the car was made in an inferior way (like the auto-start-stop kicking in when the car is cold or AC is blowing, etc., or the turbo cooling fan that runs for 20 minutes after I shut the car off, along with the infotainment. Things my Volvo is far smarter about). At least the abysmal resale value allowed me to buy it at 2 years old for close to 50% off.

When a hybrid is not required you can easily pick up better and bigger options like you mentioned. You picked the X3 as an option and it's a good one. I'll put another one on the list you forgot to mention. It's bigger brother Stelvio. Put that on the lift and you'll see it's totally different and superior to the tonale for around the same price. The hidden lift points are mind boggling. The Giulia and Stelvio kindly provide blocks that protrude from the bottom of the vehicle and are easy to see and use. Why they went this route is beyond me, although I'm sure aerodynamics is the excuse. I can guarantee those panels will all be mysteriously missing by the third oil change, worsening the aerodynamics versus regular lift points.

I'm glad to hear what you said about how it drives as we have only seen and sat in one not driven one yet. As it stands I would opt for a Stelvio Veloce which with the discounts they do cost the same if not cheaper than a Veloce Tonale. You get a bigger SUV with same power for the cost. @@albertobenelli I think that Alfa Giulia and Stelvio interiors are very similar to Mazda CX-5 or CX-9 interiors, which I also found to be great. The Alfas take it to the next level by adding sporty touches like the nicely bolstered sport seats and fantastic looking steering wheel. It may not have all the techy features of a Audi or MB or BMW, but that's precisely why I think their interiors are going to age a lot better, from at least a visual standpoint.
      If you're in to tech and screens and touch everything, then the Alfa interior wont impress you. It's the same with the 718 Porsches. They're at least a generation or two behind but the simplicity, buttons, and ergonomics are leagues better than a comparable Audi or MB or BMW product. The 718 interior is certainly much better than the garishly designed C8 interior, despite already being 7 years old.
      Sometimes, a simple, yet stylish interior is the best kind of interior. Porsche and Alfa know this.

    • @Karan-nj2dk
      @Karan-nj2dk 11 месяцев назад +2

      I did too! While I did appreciate the design of the interior, I wouldn't say the materials used and tech was better, or even on par with BMW/Audi/Merc. It didn't bother me because Alfa drove SO much better than the competition (also subjective), and while tech ages the fastest, driving dynamics of a great car are still great years later.
      Dealing with the dealership was a mess and they declared my car salvage because they couldn't diagnose/fix a broken oil pump within 3 months. If Alfa was reliable, it would be a such an easy sell.
