Back in the day, when I first heard Splinters, Zao blew my mind. They are the reason I picked up a bass and learned how to scream. They have consistently put out music ahead of it's time and I'm proud to have their logo from this album inked on me. Amazing this album came out in 2004 and metalcore has finally caught up. Long live Zao.
This band owns so many other bands. And christianty and life isnt all about love and joy and sunshine, theres highs and lows and strugles, Zao writes about it all. Its real music its what people actualy gop through not the veil that most chritianty hides behind.

19 years ago i saw em with dillinger, misery signals, and etid at bb king. The intro riff at 0:42 when the double bass kicks in was always the coolest shit ever.
First: holy shit dream gig. Second: this riff is the most haunting I’ve ever heard-but for me it’s the intro version, before it speeds up (which is like a cherry on the cake really) it’s got that perfect combo of aloof drumming and a bass that sounds like bombs going off at your face.

I do think, and would want to say... however... that it is really cool how Dan wrote "religious" lyrics without being religious at all on this album. He didn't get preachy at all. Kudos to Dan. He has got to be one of the greatest Metal songwriters EVER.

Especially since the era of bands I think he's referring too (Botch, Converge, Zao...) were either ostracized by the metal community or kinda hanging around the hardcore and punk kids. Metalcore was not relevant in the mainstream or underground. It took a number of years, innovation and hard work to legitimize the style. We all know that by the late 2000's, metalcore essentially blew into mainstream levels of attention (good and bad thing).
I dont know what it is about this album, but it stood out to me more than any of the others. 'I reject' from Living Sacrifice is a really kick ass song man. Zao & Living Sacrifice are two sweet christian metal bands in my book.

when i first heard this song, i realized Liberate-era Zao was back and actually, for the first time in a decade, breaking new ground and yet bringing back that track Savannah's style of brutality back from Liberate in these just OBSCENELY evil breakdowns. Man...gets me so f**kin hard

zao started all this screamo/metalcore crap back in the 90's and no1 give them credit. such a shame, there so great but ive seen them boo'ed off the stage twice, from ppl that dont realize what they started. LONG LIVE ZAO
And they are considered as hardcore legends. They innovated the whole christian/hardcore image when Dan came along by actually refering to a darker and more chaotic side of religion instead of praising jesus and god like they did when Shawn was still on vocals. Like underoath did with they're albums during the Changing of Times era. And the riffs, chorus etc, changed the aspect of modern hardcore metalcore as we know now. As i Lay Dying, Underoath, Killswitch Engage, Throwndown, He is Legend etc all cited Zao as one of their main influence. They are not underrated at all in the underground hardcore world. And honestly, some great things are better left underground. Zao is Alive! hXc
Seen these guy’s years back with DevilDriver, in flames and trivium.. kept yelling for them to play killing Cupid yet they seemed surprised anyone knew them and they still didn’t play it
This is the only metal band affiliated with Christianity worth listening to. I know the guys from Zao would probably call me an asshole for saying that because they have so many friends in Christian metal bands, but it's true.
With the consideration that Zao is a Christian band this song surprises me in two ways. One, it's good. lol And two, the lyrics are really very dark. Awesome awesome.

I was an atheist when I first got into them and am still an atheist. Zao are amazing.
Zao has been around since 1993...it predates 'metalcore' but was definitely a band that pioneered the sound.
