The 50th anniversary of the biggest selling rock LP of all time. £250 for yet ANOTHER 'Remaster' of the same LP, a previously released 1974 concert and more overpriced memorabilia - and of course, the obligatory overpriced hardback book of photo's we've all seen before - but not one single session out-take or demo, no new interviews or documentary, absolutely no previously unreleased material whatsoever. Disgraceful. All I can hear right now is the sound of the cash registers that open side 2. How many more blu-ray DVD's and 5.1 stereo remixes of the same LP do we possibly need? This is such a wasted opportunity.
I was surprised of the lack of content in this new remaster box set. I have the Immersion set, the 20th Anniversary cd,30th SACD,Mobile Fidelity gold cd and 1974 Japanese tour edition on vinyl. Im set when it comes to copies of this album. The new Animals remix i do need on CD. Great video!
The Animals remix is a waste of money. There are a lot of little things that made the dark mood of the original that are gone now. They went for clarity over atmosphere and removed things including reverb, David's acoustic textures, etc.
I bought my vinyl copy in...Oh yes, 1973. Still got it of course. No idea where the poster and the stickers went, though. None of us knew what to do with them in those days. Quite a new development for us.
I lost mine too, lol!! But yeah I still have the one I bought, for a lot of money, for me at that time, and it still sounds great. Now I bought a remastered copy at, of all places, Walmart. Since I work there I get a 10% discount. So I got it for $21. It sounds fantastic, and it came with all the goodies the original had. I’m gonna pass on this box set.
You’re absolutely right, wait for it to come out on eBay. Still using my jamo speakers I bought in 1990, they still sound incredible! Your box set is now selling for £250 on eBay!
"Remastering" ever since the age of compact discs began become a marketing magic trick for convince people to buy on a new format an album they already own or create the need for those who doesn't own them yet to buy it at last, and then a cliché for reissues and repressings every few years since the previous release. The same nowadays for anniversary editions, only worth it for completists and for people who couldn't get or afford the previous anniversary edition a decade ago, even more so since the 2010s vinyl became relevant once again and record companies put whatever you want them or not CDs, vinyl and Bluray discs all together on the package, so basically you're buying two or three times the same contents all at once.
I DEFINITELY AGREE with that comment on "Is There Anybody Out There"! That version really is tje superior version and REALLY showcases some of Rick Wright's very best piano work. It's absolutely beautiful and it would not be the version it is without him! I've sern them for twice for the 87/88 tour and twice for the 94 but..unfortunately, I didn't get to see all 4 together and while seeing The Wall in 2010 was a once in lifetime chance, I couldn't help but wonder what those original 80/81 shows were like. Good breakdown and I also agree with my older copies sounding just as good. I still have my vinyl copy and Dark Side was the first album I ever owned. It's a masterpiece and for them to 'top' that was a VERY difficult task. Wish You Were Here happens to be Dave's personal favorite. Hmm. 🤔 That's a hard call right there but Dark Side just holds a special place for me. Again, I saw Waters do that too in 2006 but it wasn't the same.
I'm a huge PF fan as well. I agree. The last thing I bought was the Animals remix, which I do enjoy. Otherwise you can't keep remastering an already great sounding album and expect to hear any difference that justifies the price. As far as Darkside, I have a first pressing CD, the Sax remaster CD, the 2011 Experience edition for the live recording, and the 2016 Grundman LP. The only thing I'm really waiting for is a release of The Wall Live Blu-ray which probably won't happen. We don't even know if Roger has enough good footage to make a full length concert release.
Regarding surround sound, the 5.1 mix is one of the best 5.1 mixes I've heard. I agree that in the cinema the sound for surround mixes is often not immersive, but providing you have the right set up, the 5.1 for Dark Side is incredible, with full use of all 5 speakers. It's truly immersive. I' never listen to the album in stereo, the 5.1 mix is my go to - it's that good. I agree the price for the new box is ridiculous. An easy pass for me; even more so as I own the Immersion set,
Among the many versions of this album I got a copy of the German quadraphonic on vinyl with the red band on the top of the cover and still have it but haven't listened to it in a really long time... I never had a true quad set up just a good stereo, turntable amp and speakers etc but I remember being struck by how different it sounded in terms of bits that just weren't there on the original or at least far lower down in the mix and less prominent in stereo... I'd be interested in how much this differs or compares to the newer fangled 5.1 mixes....
I totally agree with you, we the loyal fans are being ripped off with these exorbitant prices, and not just for Pink Floyd box sets, I'm also a David Bowie fan, and have bought most of the box sets, but the last one, was a rip off Back to current issue, I will not shell out for the DSOTM box, I own the 73' album and 30th anniversary CD, also bought the 2011 2disc discovery edition, so like you say who needs any more .
I never could get much from the 5.1 mix but the Quad one is gorgeous. I think that for decades now, Pink Floyd has become more about packaging than music. I think that David Gilmour's heart is in the right place about preserving the band's mystique: outtakes, demos, and repackaged boots do have a warts and all feel to it. What's the alternative? Blow a mortgage payment on a bunch of stuff I already have just for an extra disc or two? What's really left? Some demos, cleaned up boots and alternate takes/mixes? Let's leave something for the Middle Years boxset.
I got a German quad version with the red band years ago, still have it but I only ever played it on a good stereo set up and was blown away how different it sounded to the standard version,.... I own all the 5.1 versions too as a collector does but never had a 5.1 sound system... I really should sort my amp and turntable out and eventually get a 5.1....I'd love to hear the difference between the two and in general...
I went skip diving last year when I saw a few LPs on top of some rubbish. I found a 1973 pressing of dark side of the moon among them. Also some other pink Floyd albums. Their now in my small collection.
The last few years I always listen to bootlegs more than the studio albums. I have a good amount of live shows from 1971-1981. I wish PF would start putting out “official” bootlegs like the Wembley release. I already had it but the official with the posters is real cool.
Cool, another jazz/Floyd fan. Actually got more into just about everything other than Dark Side, after hearing all their less promoted material in more recent years. At 56 most of what we heard was Dark Side played out, while growing up. Then a friend got me into Animals in the mid 80s.
That quadraphonic LP you've got seems to have "Jugoton" logo in front, which means it was made in Yugoslavia. Jugoton later changed it's name to Croatia records.
I don’t own anything in this box set. I don’t think I even have a physical copy of Dark Side of the Moon. I’m new to music collecting, but I’ve always been big on huge, overstuffed-with-memorabilia box sets just like this. That being said, seeing the price they’re asking for this is just absolutely gutting, especially as a Canadian (the price is $433 here). I don’t know what to do. I want either the 50th or immersion set (which I don’t think I’ll be able to find for under $200), and the immersion set has twice the content, but the 50th set has the Atmos mix and the hardcover book which are also things I’m big on. I’m torn.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm in the same boat as you right down to also being a Canadian. Us Canadians do seem to pay more for everything too. I have travelled extensively all over the world and I try to check out what other countries are paying for their enjoyment of certain items and invariably we usually pay more than most others. The high price of living in a wonderful country I suppose.
Just go buy the 1985 Dark Side of the Moon CD (Harvest- Japanese pressing with black label on CD) and listen to that, it's the best edition of the album, apart from perhaps, the orig. vinyl pressings. Shouldn't cost more than $50.
Does anyone think they're not releasing the 2023 gatefold remaster LP on its own in order to direct the 50th anniversary appetite to the boxset and the remaster that is still.widely available? Do we think the 2023 LP will eventually be released on its own once they see enough of the boxsets sell? Honestly, I'm not even really interested in the 2023 LP itself; I just want the gatefold, but I doubt I'm such a sucker that I'll buy the boxset just for it. With the exception of Neil Young, Hendrix, and Nirvana, I don't see much value in live albums on vinyl. Much rather listen to Wembley on CD than vinyl.
Fuck the boxset, I'm gonna just get the Live at Wembley vinyl of Dark Side of the Moon that they're releasing for $30 and then wait for the book to become cheaper. Sadly, it won't have any of the demos from Wish You Were Here or Animals on it, but what can you do
The Sound Effects on The Dark Side of the Moon... and The Wall....is Amazing!!!....I want a copy where the Sound Effects are Clear.... The Voices... come at U
well you should think first about their age richard wright is already gone and EMi does this re-releases by the 20th time and pink floyd basically doesn´t exist since early 80´s allthough they released a new album in late 80´s and did several tours in the 90´s and i went to see them for the last time in their late 80´s album ,the sound was incredible the rowing boat at the beggining made us felt like if we were in the boat was a surround for all football field not less sound in the far point from the stage ,only U2 by their pop tour had a lemon in the midle of the field that did the same not surround but the same level of sound everywhere
The only thing I ever look forward to when artists come out with these box sets are the session takes and demos. I could care less about the remixes or remasters and live stuff, I just like hearing how the songs from the album progressed over the span of the recording sessions. Probably the artist that does this best is Bob Dylan with the bootleg series.
@@MatthewNorthMusic well I’ve seen them for the first time with Sid and they drop 100,000 daisy s over a out door Concert and the best shows at any concert I have ever seen they put on live show back before anyone else the Music industry and I’ve seen them 4 times and I wish I had seen more and wish we would have had the I phone we have to day at the Atlanta stadium they had A airplane land on the stage but some Dum engineer didn’t figure in the Weight of it right and the stretching of the cable aloud it hit the DUMER and there was a 1 hour delay in the show of course it could had been bad and Nick Mason could have been killed are at lease put in the Hospital but after they got it all set back up and ck him out finning a great concert by the from 69 to 89 I’ve seen around 500 to 600 hundred concert s but they all ways w went out of the way to put on a show with it, but the best music and lights and effects ! When older artists are already wealthy and have been for years, why don't they just put ALL of their material, obscure and popular, onto one collection that's mastered for the best possible sound, and sell it for a low price? That way people can appreciate their art at it's very best without feeling screwed. The artists never have to work for a living and have anything and everything in the material world they could ever want, let alone need. So why not make ALL of their artwork, including obscure hidden tracks as well as the well-known stuff, available at a reasonable price instead of picking and choosing certain tracks and trying to sell the same old same old once more for top dollar? You're already wealthy, nobody will pay big money for your re-hash of a few tracks that tons of people already own and have owned for decades. Even if they love your music and always will, they'll just pirate it!
That’s the normal price difference, though. Vinyl IS more expensive than CD’s these days, so the box set with the vinyl records is going to be majorly expensive….and not because it’s Pink Floyd or the content…it’s all on the distribution (SME).
This box has 2 LPs and 2 singles. One of the LPs you can but on its own for £19. The other disc is already available and if you shop about you can get it for around £25. The 2 singles IMHO are totally pointless. Even if they were £10 each That takes the Vinyl count to £65. add 2 CDs a DVD and Blu ray, I'm being generous at £10 each and the £30 book thats a total of £125 of Not £259....
@@MatthewNorthMusic and that’s why I put all the blame on SME. I seriously doubt that Gilmour really wanted yet another remastering of DSOTM so soon, let alone another box set after the Immersion Box. And, from what I’ve read, nobody in PF ACTUALLY wanted to pull singles off the album in the first place…that was Harvest/Capitol’s idea. (They even talked McCartney into putting Helen Wheels on Band On The Run, because they wanted the single to plug the album.)
I saw Pink Floyd play dark side at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park in November 1973 at the Robert Wyatt benefit concert and it still remains as the best version of it live
I would have to agree, I think they lost their marbles years ago. This practice (done sadly by a lot of bands) of both trolling and fleecing the fans at the same time is beyond a joke. Its not like they've haven't got enough money/had enough off the fans
I’ve always been of the opinion that Dark Side of the Moon is the closest that man has ever come to perfection. I’ve got three versions of the album. One I downloaded from iTunes so I could listen in my phone at work. It came with a live version and a video documentary of the making of the original re-mastering. Next, I bought a re-production vinyl after I gave up on finding a vintage copy that was in good shape after years of searching. Finally, I did find a vintage copy that was in excellent condition that still had the original inserts. Also had the CD but I gave it to my son after he bought his first car.
Should have kept the CD. The reason that DSOTM stayed on the charts so long is that "audiophiles" kept replacing their vinyl copy after a few plays. Once the CD came out there was no need. Perfect the first play, perfect the 1000th play.
Nothing to do with Pink Floyd... They should stop saying 'Pink Floyd release...'... Pink Floyd haven't released anything for 8 years.. this is very much 'Pink Floyd's Record Company Releases.'. .. big difference. Long after all the members are dead will this cash grab shit continue.
Imagine this, but limited edition, and at a 70's price. Just to be kind. I know, madness. A really interesting video, I was quite unaware of the history of Floyd box sets, but I've now got very good context for where this latest offering sits. An eye watering price, especially in the current financial climate.
Remasters are in many cases just an excuse for major labels to re-sell us the same old shit again and again, in worse and worse incarnations. I still have my 70s german LP release (sadly missing the poster since it's used) and my MFSL ultradisc release and i don't need anything else to be honest. I do miss the Alan Parsons Quadrophonic mix sadly. Who knows... maybe one day...
all about money for basically stuff u already have or could get cheaper. all this remastered crap too, i dont care for any of it, just prefer original album, also not fussed for live stuff, 200 odd quid takes the piss, iv brought cars for that ha.....they should highlight the track "money" on this album. thing is ppl fall for it too and buy it....give it few yrs and they`ll be another one, just like bands when they do endless best of albums crap.
@@terrencesclassicrockcorner I actually own and love the Moving Pictures box set, the YYZ show is the best live Rush I've heard. The Atmos on the Blu-Ray is good fun and the records (although I'm not a fan of the format) are really well mastered and pressed with quality jackets+sleeves. The CD has been altered from the Sean Magee mastering so it's good to have both that and the original on the Blu-Ray stereo layer - both have their upsides to my ears. I rather enjoy the included tat as well (and I don't usually), really nice paper/card stuff and quality trinkets. The book is gorgeous. I didn't get any of the other 40th anniversary box sets, but I made an exception for Moving Pictures because I was still in search of a version that sounds natural to my ears and it looked really well presented too. Both layers of the Blu-Ray as well as the LP come closer than I've yet heard. I've not heard the coveted 03 Atomic, but I've got the 25.8P which is supposedly similar and sounds frankly bizarre to me. The 2112 box set may have been better value as it was much cheaper back in the day, but most of the musical content was frankly offensive, and I doubt the DVD sounds better than my Japanese AMCY CD. For AFtK, Hemispheres and PeW, I settled for the CD sets for the extra content as I quite like the Sector 2 versions. Bottom line is, I won't pretend that an album and a 2-hour live show copied across a bunch of different formats for £200 is good value to most people, but I personally got my money's worth out of it as pretty much every track on every disc is useful to me.
The Dark Side immersion set proves that the show from Brighton 1972 was fully recorded....I'd happily pay for that above the 74 Wembley show which has been available for decades
It seems like as the kids who listened to this album in the 70's and 80's aged into real jobs the record company keep coming up with new "enhancements" and boxed sets to continue to separate us from our wallets. But I'm sure that's a coincidence. 🤔😏
Bit crap that we're not getting anything new and actually *less* than the scraps we've had before. However, that's not important. We should really be getting really, really angry that Pink Floyd are now using a prism, not like the old days when Dark Side was free of such terrifying concepts.
It is on the Early Years set. Box only. For me the reason to keep a bootleg version is because it hasn’t been messed with. Listen to the opening of Time…sounds just like the studio. But that’s not how the band sounded live in 1974. I want to hear the band as band flubs and all.
Dude, you have TOTALLY nailed it on every aspect of what makes this new 50th Anniversary box such an overpriced, content-poor disappointment. Surely, they could've gone the extra mile and delivered a vinyl box with all or as much of the bonus Immersion content as could be fit onto multiple LP's. And don't even get me started on the fact that they lazily included a hardcover book that can be purchased as a standalone item for far less, much like the 1974 Wembley album (which I plan to get just by itself). Likewise, I can't be the only one who feels that they the dropped the ball even harder on this than with the deluxe "Animals" box (in itself ANOTHER missed opportunity for an Immersion-like experience).
People go crazy for STUFF and then get taken advantage of. All my music are FLAC files on a good server and that’s it, very little physical media. Have a fairly high end system, would much rather spend on great sound reproduction than stuff. It’s all about the music man
You're younger than I. It's hard for me to imagine how it would be to become aware of DSOTM years after its release. I wore it out the year it was released. Honestly, it's a undeniable part of my personal history.
My daughter used to tease me and say Pink Floyd sucked. Last christmas I bought her vinyl copies of DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall and Animals for her record player. As long as we keep playing it, the music will live forever.
It is not just Pink Floyd doing this.. It is ridiculous how many bands are putting out big beautiful expensive box sets. RUSH for example are going overboard in putting out these Awesome sets! YES has been doing this for years! A Fan can go broke just collecting the newest fine things that legendary bands put out. Imagine the $$ that it would take to collect All of the King Crimson catalogue rareities and such! There is a fine line in being a collector of music! I have not bought an album or CD in 10 years now as I realized that collecting was a futile game. One day I had a very nice collection of All of Iron Maiden. I was shopping and saw that they came out with newer copies with extras from "Castle Records". They were beautiful, but from that point I said NO to buying more of Maiden or Anything ever again. Everything that is available is on the NET! For the most part.. If it is not there, then it probably is not worth the time, IMHO.
Frank Zappa released over 60 albums whilst he was alive. His estate has released more since, and there is a vault full of demos and jams still to go. If you were to buy a full Zappa collection not only would you have spent money on excellent music, you would be an awesome person too. There's no evidence to back that up, but it's fact ;)
Pink Floyd is a corporation. Its worth pointing out that Roger Waters gets a bad rap for suing for the use of Pink Floyds name, but at that time Pink Floyd was essentially bankrupt and he wanted to prevent exactly THIS from happening. Thats likely in part why he's now doing his OWN version of Dark Side of the Moon. Pink Floyd is a 'machine', thats what he was referring to. When you give them money, you feed the machine. I think 'maybe' I paid for Diviision Bell, that was probably the last time I paid for ANY music except individual artists. Stop feeding the machine. Roger OR Pink Floyd don't need any more money. If you are dishing out money for this stuff, well, I won't say you deserve to get ripped off, but its not like you can't listen to Dark Side without buying yet another copy.
I did not like the post 2000 remix at all. (I haven't heard the most recent yet.) It just sounds like they pushed the foreground into the background and vice versa. It ruined all of the nuances that made DSOTM the album that it was. I also had a 90's cd and it was the digital capture of the vinyl you would expect from the time, making it great. But, that's just my opinion based on decades of hearing it one way then being exposed to another. I also saw the Pay Per View that ended up sort of becoming what became Pulse. It was the same shows but different cuts from different days and to be honest, it was superior. I remember being so excited for Pulse to come out because the VHS we had made of the Pay-Per-View was getting worn out as my dad and I were both big fans. And then Pulse came out, it wasn't the same setlist. It was the same songs in the same order, but it was captured over 2 days, and the selection used and video was different from the Pay-Per-View I had seen and recorded. That VHS in no longer viewable and I'm left with only the memory and spiteful reminders when I hear tracks from Pulse.
I saw pink floyd at free trade hall manchester 1972, playing dsotm. They played using full quadraphonic sound. I bought their dsotm album version in sq quadraphonic. I had a pioneer quad hifi system at the time.
I am 67 and have been a Floyd fan since my older brother introduced me to them in 1969 with Atom Heart Mother, and I saw them with the Momentary Laps Of Reason tour at Wembley Stadium in 88, there is NO way on earth I would pay that price for this new release. It seems the only thing that matters is "Money" not the fans.
All those lame-o's who purchase the same old classic rock dinosaur albums over and over again deserve everything they get. It is just supply and demand: if squillions of predictable dullards all want the same thing, then record companies can charge like a wounded bull for it. Look at Rush's audience towards the end, they would have shelled out for recordings of their heroes expelling gas after a bad curry as long as it came in a shiny package.
At this stage with these albums, remastering is just code for ‘making it louder’. Unless there’s a true case of presenting the songs with justifiable new mixes, as with Revolver, there’s just no point. It’s a cash grab. That said there have been some really great re-issues lately that have benefited from a remix and remaster. Steven Wilson’s work on the Gentle Giant LPs being one of them.
Oh yeah anytime I’m going through the albums I always skip over the studio version of the wall. This is probably gonna sound weird, but I don’t even think I own it. Always live version. That’s how you know a band is incredible; when they’re better live.
I'm considering getting the 50th anniversary since I do not have the Immersion, I've only got the basic CD. It seems like the biggest thing you miss with the 50th anniversary over the Immersion is the CD3 with early versions and extra tracks. There isn't any way to get a copy just that CD by itself?
You say the price of this box set puts it out of reach of normal people. I think the reasoning is that normal people would not buy this anyway! It's aimed at a few rich, aging rockers with more dollars than sense ...
For sure and without generalising mostly men. Over 65 with big pensions and a collection of guitars on the wall that they can't play. ! My theory is this roll on 20 years and there will be a glut of rare records and guitars from estate of rich old men who's families don't want this stuff !!!
Hello Matthew. Greetings from Vancouver British Columbia Canada. I"m a 66 years of age fan of Pink Floyd that was first introduced to the Floyd sound when I was about 17 years of age. A nice stretch of listening to the music of Pink Floyd but I am certainly not as well informed as you are when it comes to matters about this great band. I was just browsing around RUclips and by some good old serendipity came upon your channel. Nice job on this piece about PF's Dark Side box set from Immersion and how it compares to the new 50th anniversary edition about this great band. I have been away from collecting music for a bit and am now getting back into it and was just thinking about what I would like to have as a nice bit of memorabilia for some of the artists that I really enjoy. Low and behold I came upon what you presented here and it has helped me immensely in what to look for. This box set from Immersion that you have shown here is a very nice looking set and it might just be what I'm looking for. Now to find it at a price that I think is still fair value I suppose. I can't see buying the new 50th edition with what you have described it as. I would still like some vinyl but I will likely look for that somewhere other than what the 50th has to offer. I liked your presentation so much I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing what else you might be commenting on in regards to music. Thank you and may peace be with you.
The original cd masters sound more like how it sounded originally.. the remasters sound bass boosted.. if you pick out the wall .. comfortably numb is sped up slightly on the remaster.. The first big box versions of the wall sound absolutely glorious..
Remaster it by all means but keep it true to the original form as it was intended to be. I've got Original record. CD and DVD. The flaming lips did. dark side of the moon. I think. It was absolutely horrible. I was descusted. How could anybody do that to a classic album. The crap that these musicItions bring out nowadays. And I wouldn't even call them musicItions far from it.Thank Gould I was born in a different era than today. With fantastic bands like pink Floyd. From 🇬🇧👍👍 an old cockney gal
I have the 2011 remaster and the 30th anniversary with the super audio CD. I own a Sony Blu-ray player specifically for my 5.1 channel CDs like the SACD. Dark side sounds awesome in 5.1
Several years ago I bought the Obfuscation box set with the misunderstanding that it contained the Pompeii concert film on blu-ray. Much to my disappointment it was only excerpts and not the complete film. But it was good to have those songs available on a CD, especially the awesome live version of Echoes. I'd love to see a nice blu-ray version of the film released-not the horrible director's cut with the cheap CGI images of Pompeii. I still have my vinyl copy of Dark Side of the Moon that I got for Christmas with the little freebies, although I lost one of the stickers and the two posters are a little tattered. I am a fan of the band but don't snap up ever remix that comes out, although I might get the recent remix release of Animals. I'm fine with what I have in my library.
The Version of Pompeii on the early years was a mess, some of it was sourced from laserdisc!! Not proper HD. I don't mind the 'Extra' bits not being there the fake 'recording in the studio' stuff and Nicks crustless Apple Pie.. Its a shame Pompeii has never been released with the original sound mix (no heartbeat sound at the start) and splicing together Echoes was awful. One of the joys of Pompeii was it being split into 2 and book-ending the film.
It's not perfect I think, but I found this cleaned up version of Pompeii while scouring the web a while back and saved it. It's in the proper pitch, for one thing, so many versions were pitched up and I never wanted to listen to them... drive.google.com/file/d/1PTvx7O72Se0Ew_qEcha0Uhk9lKfomHnn/view?usp=sharing
@@MatthewNorthMusic I've noticed Live at Pompeii from Obfuscation sounds terrible! Could you point me toward the best audio quality of Live at Pompeii that I can listen to on my phone?
I have the original box set and won't be buying the new version. As for sound quality I think the CD remasters sound far better than the original CD release which dates back from a time where digital mastering was still in its infancy. But of course it also depends of the quality of your Hi-Fi system.

Quite a new development for us.
a lot of us Floyd nuts pinned the posters on their bedroom walls......
now that really was immersion !
Stick them on stuff and hang up the poster lol
You didn't know how to use a poster or stickers? Word?
Poster and stickers go on The Wall
An easy pass for me; even more so as I own the Immersion set,
It’s rubbish and sounds unnatural. Give me stereo any day.
@@garethde-witt6433 You never heard proper 5.1 equipment. Take your stereo up where it doesn't shine.
@@garethde-witt6433 Not on a decent system, with a mix done well. Some mixes are terrible, but when they are done well there's nothing more immersive.
@@lucifersamslittertray I also have this version (amongst many others), and it does sound completely different in places
I totally agree with you, we the loyal fans are being ripped off with these exorbitant prices, and not just for Pink Floyd box sets, I'm also a David Bowie fan, and have bought most of the box sets, but the last one, was a rip off
Back to current issue, I will not shell out for the DSOTM box, I own the 73' album and 30th anniversary CD, also bought the 2011 2disc discovery edition, so like you say who needs any more .
That is fantastic well done 👍
The last few years I always listen to bootlegs more than the studio albums. I have a good amount of live shows from 1971-1981. I wish PF would start putting out “official” bootlegs like the Wembley release. I already had it but the official with the posters is real cool.
Think I will just keep playing my 1973 LP.....ok, on the quieter bits it does sound like bacon frying but at my age my hearing is shot anyway.
Cool, another jazz/Floyd fan.
Actually got more into just about everything other than Dark Side, after hearing all their less promoted material in more recent years. At 56 most of what we heard was Dark Side played out, while growing up. Then a friend got me into Animals in the mid 80s.
I actually have the Ronnies T Shirt as I was given it after playing 2 Sold out nights there with Mike Westbrook last April :)
Just go buy the 1985 Dark Side of the Moon CD (Harvest- Japanese pressing with black label on CD) and listen to that, it's the best edition of the album, apart from
perhaps, the orig. vinyl pressings. Shouldn't cost more than $50.
Loved the review! Very detailed. 🙏
I’m sure the 50th vinyl will get a release… give it six months…..as will the blu ray…
The latest Animals remaster was fantastic. Maybe they will make comparable improvements on Dark Side.
That was a remix
Fuck the boxset, I'm gonna just get the Live at Wembley vinyl of Dark Side of the Moon that they're releasing for $30 and then wait for the book to become cheaper. Sadly, it won't have any of the demos from Wish You Were Here or Animals on it, but what can you do
As long as fools keep buying, they'll keep releasing.
The Sound Effects on The Dark Side of the Moon... and The Wall....is Amazing!!!....I want a copy where the Sound Effects are Clear.... The Voices... come at U
I noticed the rainbows are upside down on the marbles. Wonder what's up with that?
well you should think first about their age richard wright is already gone and EMi does this re-releases by the 20th time and pink floyd basically doesn´t exist since early 80´s allthough they released a new album in late 80´s and did several tours in the 90´s and i went to see them for the last time in their late 80´s album ,the sound was incredible the rowing boat at the beggining made us felt like if we were in the boat was a surround for all football field not less sound in the far point from the stage ,only U2 by their pop tour had a lemon in the midle of the field that did the same not surround but the same level of sound everywhere
I am also a diehard fan,and I also stand by your opinion my friend, here here........
Did Roger agree to this? He announced that he rerecorded DSOM and maybe that is why David's wife went after Roger.
I have got all the Immersion box set all great no way am I going to go for 250 quid book I will get later
Boy you were late listening to one of the greatest groups out there !

only if it comes with several sheets of LSD otherwise it's not immersive, just expensive
How do you reckon they feed their different set of wives and kids? Inflation is high and getting high doesn't hit that same high note anymore.
I was hoping for a remixed CD to go with Animals and Momentary, but...
They did that in 2003 ! And was on the immersion box as well
Remaster, quad mix, 5.1, pcm high définition, 360, dolby surround, and now the new gadget for 300€ the atmos mix, well, musically nothing new....
You know, what they could've done was maybe write some new material.
I saw Pink Floyd play dark side at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park in November 1973 at the Robert Wyatt benefit concert and it still remains as the best version of it live
I'm good with the Immersion box set... I'm at a point in my life where I don't care about "new" remixes/remasters/etc...
I am with you there
I would have to agree, I think they lost their marbles years ago.
DSOTM can be improved. Water´s version of Comfortably Numb goes deeper than the original.
@LeBe No. It can be altered, but not improved.
@@andrewhaines3259 It didn´t do the job. Did it make the world a better place? I think hardly anybody got the message, really listened to the words.
Should have kept the CD. The reason that DSOTM stayed on the charts so long is that "audiophiles" kept replacing their vinyl copy after a few plays. Once the CD came out there was no need. Perfect the first play, perfect the 1000th play.
@@lebe220 That's the Wall and Waters thinks he is PF. He's not. Leave it alone.
The punk band Crass had stickers on their records saying you shouldn't buy it for more than X amount (I think it was like £1.50).
My favourite album of all time which made a lasting impression on me when I first heard it aged 10 in 1979.
No Doubt!!! I'm willing to bet that Dark Side Of The Moon is the most recognizable album cover of all time.
It so is.
How much are you willing to bet?
I'd have to put the cover of Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper at #1. Dark Side in the top 5 for sure. No offence to my fellow Floyd freaks out there.
Thriller!
Tubular Bells?
A lot of damn good covers back then.
It's $299.99 on Amazon here in the States. I'll stick with my old cd.
Very good Matt 🌗I don’t know why they don’t do a nice Blu-ray stand-alone release like they did with “Animals”. I’ve got the SACD of DSOTM.
Who knows but there you go. They could learn a lot from Marillion 4 disc box set and book and never more than about £28
absolutely the Marillion sets are fantastic and value for money!! Oi Floyd - No !!
Every time they reissue it becomes less interesting to me, and the group becomes more irritating. Shame, as I liked them a lot once, starting in 1980.
That's actually a very good way of putting it. The immersion box was at the time An exciting prospect nothing since has been close
The Dark Side immersion set proves that the show from Brighton 1972 was fully recorded....I'd happily pay for that above the 74 Wembley show which has been available for decades
I agree with you 100% I'll buy the stand alone live album and I'm good.
It seems like as the kids who listened to this album in the 70's and 80's aged into real jobs the record company keep coming up with new "enhancements" and boxed sets to continue to separate us from our wallets. But I'm sure that's a coincidence. 🤔😏
I enjoyed the 5.1 darkside of the moon... 2003
Bit crap that we're not getting anything new and actually *less* than the scraps we've had before.
However, that's not important. We should really be getting really, really angry that Pink Floyd are now using a prism, not like the old days when Dark Side was free of such terrifying concepts.
The Bootleg version of 74 wembley gig is the one to own cause it includes Echoes unlike the offical version that does not!
It is on the Early Years set. Box only.
For me the reason to keep a bootleg version is because it hasn’t been messed with. Listen to the opening of Time…sounds just like the studio. But that’s not how the band sounded live in 1974. I want to hear the band as band flubs and all.
@@vivalapsych I aggree!
Hear, Hear ! MONEY, "Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash" i want a new quad or even the old quad mix on new vinyl.
Is it Rush or is it the corporation that owns the music?
The immersion box from 2011 will do me just fine.
No kidding. I have mfsl and immersion. Along with a dsd128 from 1/2" master at 15ips, which is unreal and smokes the rest
Happy to hear I’m not the only person who prefers Is There Anybody Out There: The Wall Live over the studio recordings 🙂
Every time
Oh yeah anytime I’m going through the albums I always skip over the studio version of the wall. This is probably gonna sound weird, but I don’t even think I own it. Always live version. That’s how you know a band is incredible; when they’re better live.
although the wall live album is a frankenstein of multiple nights from earl's court it's still maybe the best "live" album...
Didn't floyd sell all their copyrights so will this be the Record company alone money grabbing release?
I’ll buy it on vinyl
Gilmour wants nothing to do with Pink Floyd, but he doesn't mind making millions in boxed sets and remastering.
Warner music group owns the Pink Floyd catalog. This is on them.
250 quid for a legacy/reputation tainter.Incredible move.
There's maybe a hundred million units of this lp world over at minimum! Let the Industry further bankrupt itself flogging a dead horse.
and no Quadraphonic mix.
Pink Floyd would charge 3000 dollars for a reach around....
Honestly, I still listen to all my favourite music in 128/44 mp3 and am overwhelmingly glad.
I once dreamt that my doctor gave me a prescription for dark Side Of The Moon. !
Pink Floyd started losing their marbles a long, long time ago...
Yawn, get to the point
I’m not being funny, but how many times can you re-buy the same thing ?
Thank you and may peace be with you.
ah the endless revenue. I will just get the live LP and call it at that with this one.
The original cd masters sound more like how it sounded originally.. the remasters sound bass boosted.. if you pick out the wall .. comfortably numb is sped up slightly on the remaster..
The first big box versions of the wall sound absolutely glorious..
I have no complaints with any of the original Floyd CDs or any 1980s CDs to be perfectly honest
kept me interested for full video...very very good...
The LP"s in the set are cut from digital masters. Digital LP's in a "Deluxe set" Okey Dokey.
I don't get anything about the flaming lips sadly.
I *think* the SQ (Quad) version is Australian. The pressing I have is ;)
Thank you

Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie
Money
So they say
Is the root of all evil today
I have the 2011 remaster and the 30th anniversary with the super audio CD. I own a Sony Blu-ray player specifically for my 5.1 channel CDs like the SACD. Dark side sounds awesome in 5.1
Very informative. Thank you.
Cassettes???? Let it go buddy......let it go.

@@MatthewNorthMusic I've noticed Live at Pompeii from Obfuscation sounds terrible! Could you point me toward the best audio quality of Live at Pompeii that I can listen to on my phone?
Most sound bad tbh
I have the original box set and won't be buying the new version. As for sound quality I think the CD remasters sound far better than the original CD release which dates back from a time where digital mastering was still in its infancy. But of course it also depends of the quality of your Hi-Fi system.
Greed for more money... What a shame... ☹️
I like The Wall better. Yeah I know it's an unpopular opinion.
So do I
