    To Shrink Mosquito Population, Scientists Are Releasing 20 Million Mosquitoes
    www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-wa...
    "This summer, scientists in California are releasing 20 million mosquitoes in an effort to shrink the population of mosquitoes that can carry diseases. It sounds counterintuitive. But the plan is to release millions of sterile male mosquitoes, which will then mate with wild female mosquitoes. The eggs the females lay won't hatch, researchers say."

      Cameron Jeffery they are an integral part of the ecosystem and could potentially wipe out our foodchain. Besides, the females only bite before reproduction and mosquitoes are only carriers to viruses. As long as we can sterilise them, they would be safe

    • @clintwolf5737
      @clintwolf5737 3 года назад +1

      Agreed. "They" (scientists) believe they have a way now, but people are against the risk. I am in favor of wiping the mosquitoes out completely. There are those that will say "What if this..." and "What if that...". The concerns are worth considering, but let's not hold up progress just because of "What if" scenarios. "What if" we no longer had mosquitoes and could stay outside without putting poison on us to avoid getting bitten. That is worth the risk. Various species of all types go extinct every year, and life goes on.

  • @odinsmeadhorn196

      Matthew Cecil it's true. Its predicted hundreds of bird species would go extinct if mosquitoes did too. Probably more than that though. And the niche would be filled by a new insect, but what would that be? Maybe biting horseflys... Could you imagine?

    • @matthewcecil8552
      @matthewcecil8552 6 лет назад +6

      Jessica, I think the better option is to develop a female mosquito that as a dislike for proteins specific to human blood. This is incredibly difficult though, but I'm confident I could do it. An option that makes humans a less palatable source of blood is truly ideal, if we're only willing to modify mosquitoes. I try to devise long-term solutions but these are more difficult than the short-term solutions presented in this video. The video mentioned NOTHING of a gene drive being used to drive unfavorable traits through the population against natural selection, but these can be used... and should be used carefully.

      @Bobbylim323 6 лет назад +2

      Fruitarian Hiv is spread differently from the viruses that mosquitoes carry and cancer is not even a virus (though it can be caused by viruses during DNA integration) Hiv is difficult to eradicate due to the fact that the reverse transcriptase that it contains does not proofread, leading to a high rate of mutation. So drugs targeting specific parts of the Hiv proteins would be obselote in no time. Cancer is caused by a mutation in the tumour repressor gene and the proto oncogene gene in somatic cells and is difficult to eliminate cuz it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cells that have faulty genes. My information is not exhaustive but I hope it sparks some curiosity in you to read on more about it

I bet we'll have 1 health pack life which when we die we can say respawn on our minds and we'll respawn, we'll also have robots who are out partners its scary to think of the enormous future.

      Weak analogy at best. Human babies do not transmit diseases when they grow up by biting other human beings. Not to mention, there are not thousands of human species that spread hundreds of diseases. What a faulty emotional appeal made by an American no doubt.

    • @feynstein1004
      @feynstein1004 6 лет назад +17

      Don't be afraid to voice your concerns. It's only natural. Having said that, it's unlikely that wiping out just one species of mosquitoes would cause such devastating effects. There are hundreds of species of mosquitoes, only a handful of which are bad for humans. If we wiped out the harmful ones, the most likely outcome is that the neutral ones will fill their place in the ecosystem. Ecosystems are incredibly complex but unlike machines, this complexity is their strength because it helps them adapt to change.

    • @OrganicGreens
      @OrganicGreens 6 лет назад +2

      Your right there is no other case where we have used genetically modified insects. But there are plenty of times we have tried to influence a habitat/eco system for the better and we almost always make it worse due to unforeseen consequences. Mosquitoes are food for lots of other animals and insects. The outcome of genetic pollution is unpredictable. What if we drastically decrease or even extinct a certain type of mosquito and that has effects on the food chain. I don't see how they could possibly reliable predict the outcome of this huge experiment. In an eco system there is almost infinite variables.
