- A short human interest film about the most recent volcanic eruption in Iceland by Donal Boyd and Frank Nieuwenhuis.
For the first time ever in the history of our planet, thousands of people have been able to experience such an intense force of nature together.
As most people focused on the eruption itself, this short film turns the camera around on the people and explores what it really means to connect with nature through a collective experience.
Donal Boyd is a wildlife conservationist and fine art portrait photographer and filmmaker with the mission to promote "Conservation of Nature Through Visual Advocacy”.
Frank Nieuwenhuis is a director and filmmaker based in Iceland with the mission to capture and depict the essence of his subjects and their personal stories through cinematic and highly aesthetic visuals.

DISCLAIMERS: (1) A volcanic eruption is quite obviously an unpredictable and immensely dangerous force of nature. In general viewing, such a spectacle is prohibited by poisonous gas, risk of exposure to scorching hot lava, and other various hazards. The production of this film involved careful assessment of all such various conditions that would minimize the risks involved. This included, but is not limited to, following official updates and advice from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, Icelandic Search and Rescue Team, and advisors on the ground at the eruption site. Utilization of technical equipment, including gas masks, and gas detectors to monitor poisonous gases. And direct contact with volcanologists for up-to-date predictions on volcanic activity and risks. Inherently, there is always a certain degree of uncertainty when visiting an active volcano, but because of the nature of this particular eruption, the risks were minimal. Seeing as the primary caldera was situated in a depression, surrounded by mountains, which made viewing safe. This allowed literally thousands of people to visit the volcano early on. (2) As conditions at the eruption site have changed, this might prohibit the ease of viewing. If you do decide to visit the eruption site in the future yourself, we advise you to follow updates and advice on how to prepare yourself published through ruv.is and vedur.is.

I love when massive forces of nature can be observed safely and with respect. The footage i have been seeing is both liberating and humbling.

Not quite like this but as a kid living in Sicily, Mount Etna erupted pretty good and my parents drove us up the mountain close enough to check out the lava flowing. That was amazing.

It expresses something that is deep within our being, a primal sense that is both fear and awe and belonging. In ages long past it was the tribe, it was the communal sharing of the experience of living one with another. For this brief moment it is happening again in the wilds of Iceland.

Volcanoes can be such an amazing show in their beauty but also in their awfulness...When people here are enjoying the spectacle, the people of St Vincent in the Caribbean, where the volcano "La Soufriere' has exploded, are hoping to save their lives. The contrast is total. A thought for them.

2:37 I've never known anyone who lived in any sort of fear of an eruption.
Usually when we hear there is one imminent.. we get excited. and then get disappointed when they would say eruption will not happen.
....basically this whole line he says there is not true for Icelanders. This force of nature is a pert of our identity as a nation, and the fact we've embraced it over the years is something that makes us proud to be Icelandic.

Nice video, as an Icelander it is something to see the difference of people coming to witness the power of nature and be in awe together. As a photographer also to capture the variety of faces seen at this remote sight in the middle of the Atlantic young, old, people of all colors is a unique and enlightening moment.

Interesting perspective. I've been trying to figure out why I am so obsessed with this volcano -- I have never been so interested in this stuff before. And there are so many people "following" it on RUclips it is definitely a collective experience, however 'remotely'. For me, it feels like a release - geologically of course but also with the people. We are all connected, and we are all connected with the Earth. It's a collective geo-political catharsis ! I hope it is a healing. And the fact that it is happening in an area where no one can get hurt is very special. A safe space where Earth can release her tensions, and the people can participate in helping her simply by watching.

I guess its just what people want and need to see, how people can still unite and be human in a world that is kept hostage by a virus. Look at all those people happy, free and unmasked enjoying our true purpose to be connected. If they followed the rules, it wasnt allowed to be here with so many people at same time, but they didnt because they couldnt sell it anyway to restrict the amount of people going here in the first place. And guess what? Nothing bad came from it, just happy faces. I cant help but just to see it that way. If this was in US or elsewhere in Europe, this wouldnt have happened. It s a wonderful experience to watch nature’s fascinating sites.
I have spent the night there with one other person and it does not give you much more than being there with everybody. This thing is so grand that we are like dust compared to it and all the people around you are is as much awe as you are. So the feeling of the group is like being on a big concert, the joy and awe is contagious everybody is really happy and so happy the you get to experience this as well. Gone 6 times to it so far and every time you catch a glimpse of it the wonder starts and it just does not let you down. Thanks for the great video and insight.

The Best IceVolc video I have seen so far
This is so precious for all of us around the world who could not come to Iceland to see the eruptions ourselves. We were connected by videos and 24/7 webcams and live chats with the volcano and the people there. It was an awesome summer as long as it lasted. Every night watching the ever changing volcano, lava geysirs, golden fire streams, the fiery power of a living planet, of landscape-creating nature... fueling up my own energy and creativity to live on till he went dormant September 18th.
I miss the volcano so much and I am not alone with this feeling.

What a beautifully shot and narrated film! Love the faces you have captured and the interviews. It is an event that needs an audience. Deserves so many more views and likes. When watching the live stream of the eruption and the time lapse, I enjoy just as much seeing the people gathered around the lava and watching their head lamps at night moving along the paths. I so want to visit Iceland to see this.

Excellent short! Truly loved your narrative about connecting in a primal way. I thought the same at the beginning of the film. I lived in Oregon when Mt St. Helens erupted, but as a pyroclastic flow that decimated land, trees, bridges and took lives for miles sadly. Yet, there was a great reminder of how nature is in control. Then, there was also the experience of seeing Crater Lake and the lava fields there...spectacular country.

I'm always amazed at how many European, Scandinavian, and Nordic people speak English.
I mean it's kinda necassary for higher education and buisness/communication. We're taught english from 1st grade (6 year olds) to final year in highschool (19)
Agree. Not only speak English, but it's perfect English at a high level. This must help when going to study (eg university) or for online working, or for jobs - such as pilot.
