- For the third year, Tiny Desk concerts team up with globalFEST for a thrilling online music festival - Tiny Desk meets globalFEST.
Bob Boilen | January 28, 2023
Hosted by Angélique Kidjo, the series echoes globalFEST’s live flagship event in spirit but is centered in the framework of the Tiny Desk concert series. This collaboration presents exclusive video performances from nine artists filmed in their respective homelands, on the road and in exile all over the world. There will be three nights of concerts, each featuring three bands, on consecutive nights beginning Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. ET. The globalFEST team wrote the following biographical information about each performer.
Cui Jian, China
The most influential rock musician in China is Beijing-born, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and vocalist Cui Jian. The former leader of Chinese rock band Ado, Jian's solo music is continually embraced by new generations: his albums having sold more than 10 million copies in Asia. The Wall Street Journal said, "Cui Jian continues to be an inspiration for China's disenchanted youth." However, Jian's prime inspiration comes not from politics, but from personal issues. He said, "I talk about serious things in my heart and people's lives, including, of course, love. But, mostly it's about Chinese culture, the modern culture. They're not political songs. It's just the truth, the modern truth. I talk about our life in China."

where did you see him perform? My Chinese is rusty/ I thought he fled Mainland in 1989. While living in Jung Gwo da Lu from 1989-1991, everybody listened to him and felt he was the voice of the Tian An Men movement/revolution.

So I had to Google this gentleman and it says he’s the god father of Chinese rock. The instrumentals sound like a combination of jazz brass, bluegrass, ancient asiatic instruments and wood instruments. I really enjoyed it. It’s nice to experience a new style of music and I may not understand the language but I can hear the passion in his voice. The melody is very nice and calming. Music is truly the universal language. Thank you for sharing your gifts with love from a Black American music enthusiast!
He’s such a legend in China. He’s early music was so innovative, basically the first musician who brought Rock Music to China. And the lyrics of his songs are always so critical to the country and the government, but also full of love and will of freedom. And you can turn on the English sub in RUclips if you are interested:)
😭🍀
Marvellous. Music like that just transcends any cultural boundaries so easily, it seems, and makes you see how much the same we are at the end, all humans. Thank you!
cui jian is an absolute icon in chinese rock since a few decades now. what a treat to see him on npr. i came across cui jian on accident when i was a elementary school kid. not an age where you would expect someone to appreciate this kind of music, but i fell in love nonetheless. later dicovered he is also a favorite of my dad, i was already an adult at that time. cui jian has a very special place in my heart not only because of the fantastic music and his straight up personality, but also because he forms a bond between me and my dad that i teasure. well done npr!! you definitely made my day. not the first time though from you guys :)
This Bloke is a sell-out to his Race and Traditions....He is like those Turn-Coats like the Piano Plonking: "Lang Lang" and that Potato faced Benedict Wong.
And as for that so called serious Actor. Chin Han......How much did that pay you to be so bent!
Just to be a little bit more picky...
Oh; teasure is spelt Treasure.....
I've seen Cui Jian twice in concert and met him in person once. Every time, he was wearing that same hat.
东岸 is a beautiful music venue next to a beautiful landmark of Beijing, feeling overly nostalgic from this performance for my time spent studying abroad there
My first concert was cuijian’s “Night of an Era” on December 31, 1999. More than twenty years have gone by and he’s still a legend!
Wow! Chinese rock! So proud of seeing Chinese musicians here❤❤❤
Surprisingly delight to find Cui's gig in NPR , I grew up listening his music that opened the door for me to explore more Rock'roll band. Always joyful to listen his acoustic version too ❤,BTW Eddy is such an underestimated guitarist played his part amazingly here, He's been in Cui's band ever since the band formed , And Liu Yuan .
Eddie was there before, in the Beijing underground when he was a kid
WOW!!!!!!!!! One of the best Tiny Desk performances I've seen in a while. Thank you NPR and Thank you globalFEST.
this is the real music of the working man.
Thank you so much for this powerful music. It really doesn't matter that I have no idea what they are saying. All I hear is voices and instruments that touch me.
True, but if you want to know what they're saying, you can turn on English closed captions :)
@@StephenJones2 thank you I didn't know
For those who don't know: Cui Jian is like Bob Dylan to China.
哈哈哈,我第一时间就想发这句的,应该说 more than dylan to China
Cui is more like Lennon and Cobain combined for my generation.
No. I like him but he is not Bob Dylan to me. If you have to pick someone else that is like Bob Dylan, I would say Ta-yu Luo (罗大佑)
Who is Bob Dolan?
luo dayou (罗大佑)is more like china‘s bob dylan
Love Cui Jian!! What a great gig! It is amazing to see Cui Jian on stage again. We need to see him performing more.
好开心可以在tiny desk看到更多的文化包容, 希望以后也可看到更多的亚洲艺术家!keep up the good work
Ahhhh merci! Thanks! There is not enough of Cui Jian on the web!
Watched this again. Timeless classic.
Really glad you’re doing these videos from the musician’s native homes. Adds so much magic to the music!!!
Cui Jian is the godfather of rock in China, and he’s work is so innovative and full of character. He’s lyrics are always critical and until now we Chinese, still can’t listen to a few of his songs in our local music app. Because he criticised the government but no in very direct words. Those few songs still got banned until now, and it was made in the 80s. Can you believe that?
I never know how seriously to take him when he says his songs are not about politics. Here, maybe a better translation of some of the lines of "Go On":
Reality stands up / like some Erectile Tissue
It sticks into your mouth / then tells you to breath
-------------------
Power hangs high / protect us from weather
The land of my livelihood / Fear
-------------------
Only standing up / on the land of my birth
The sky crushes down / testing my endurance
Your body bows down / you weep for me
But your heart is saying / Continue
👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing! Love the lyrics
So nice to see you back, Cui Jian. And with 箫 flute and 琴 zither! keep on going.
It's so cool to see him on Tiny Desk! also noticed that one of the backup singers is pregnant at the time, such dedication
so amazing
It's like crazy that when I saw "Cui Jian" appears at the video list of NPR Music. Wow..oh Wow! Love it, enjoy it much! Thanks NPR brings us all the good music!

Fake Monk
I want to go from south to north.
I want to go from white to black.
I want everybody to watch me,
But not know who I am.
If you see me looking a little tired,
Then please pour me a bowl of water.
If you've fallen in love with me,
Then please kiss my mouth.
I have these feet and legs.
I have so many mountains and rivers.
I want all of this everything - but not hate or regret.
If you want to love me, don't worry about regretting it,
Because eventually I always leave everything behind.
I never stay in one place,
And never want anyone to follow me,
I want to go from south to north.
I want to go from white to black.
I want everybody to watch me,
But not know who I am.
I only want to see you blossoming,
But don't want to know about your suffering.
I wish to attain the waters of heaven,
But not your tears.
I have no wish to believe in demons,
And no wish to oppose anybody.
Don't try to figure out who I really am,
And don't try to see through my facade.
La la la la la la la la…

English translation
[Fake Monk] is composed by Cui Jian in his album [ Rock and Roll on the Road of New Long March] in 1989 [1]. It is one of Chinese Rock classics that had been covered by many singers.
In Buddhism, ascetics monks are usually wanderers withdrawn from the world for their practices in search of enlightenment. They have strong faith but are generally loners who are not understood by the society. The title of the song [Fake (Ascetic) Monk] suggests a loner who has not find his/her path.
Cui Jian, is quite determined in spelling out his “don’t care” attitude towards phony emotions and relationships. In the original arrangement, a Chinese traditional instrument, Zither, was used in an unique way to further enhance a sense of mocking and carefreeness.
YES!
Thank you NPR for this global series and for having Cui Jian from PRC. Love from Hong Kong
Thanks a lot

my first time hearing this but I am bewitched. wow
When get the point of the second song Go ON, you will learn what Cui Jian really wants to say.
Amazing.
Fake Monk has always been my absolute favorite Cui Jian song - amazing to find it here on youtube tonight !!! The song has evolved musically since I first heard it in 1995. Love both versions and can't wait to hear the rest !!

Interesting.
those backing vocals tho!
Who is Cui Jian? He is the Bob Dylan of China, the father of Chinese rock and roll.
