This game is mental nuts in a good way. It is the most frantic game I've ever played. As all play is simultaneous it never stops being exciting and it really is a race to destroy each others ships. This truly is a fantastic game.
Thanks for your video! I played this at PAX Prime a year ago when it was still in Beta and loved, loved, loved it. Let me tell you - I want to get this in the hands of two teams of military personnel. I feel like Submariners in particular would nail this as well as Star Trek aficionados.
Sounds good! (& btw, I'm surprised & honored to have received a reply from the game's designer! Thanks BGG for the fyi) I liked how unique the original Space Cadets game was, a truly a cooperative game! But the game's length kept it from being a party game, & was a factor keeping me from getting the original. (It took an hr. to teach!) Some of my family seem to like mainly competitive games, others like cooperative. I think this game would be a good mix of both, & I am interested in it!
Now I haven't looked or played the whole game of Space Cadets, but this looks way more streamlined. Paper Tokens replaced with custom dice? Yes please. Less components is always a good thing. Also, I like how other stations like sensors and tractor beams have secondary offensive roles as an alternative, so the game doesn't bottleneck as much as it did with Space Cadets where the entire crew's fate rested upon the weapons guy flicking his puck accurately, regardless of how masterfully the others did their stations.
I liked the idea of Space Cadets, but the game itself took so long to teach & play! If this game truly is a shorter game then I'd be interested, as a party game. This reminded me some of Escape as well, which is full of commotion.
.. so who's gonna arbitrate that the team's are actually rolling the dies, instead of just 'choosing'. there's a lot of honesty needed in this game lol
This sounds like a game that is awesome with the right kind of people, but could get instantly derailed if you get that one timid player who doesn't really know what they're supposed to do and would like to stop to think their next action...

A couple of people have noted the Defiant on the cover - the player minis look like the Defiant too!

Nice! I have this one preordered, so i was very happy to see this review.. Tnx Tom!
Space Cadets is possibly my favorite game at this point, and this one looks even better.
I feel if a game's "expansion" is already ready before the game is even released that it should probably be included & used as a variant.
The expansion is still under development, but we figured we would include the icons since we were pretty sure we were going to use them.

I love how it's the USS Defiant (or Defiant Class) ship on the Box Cover. ;)
Whoa... that spaceship on the front cover is VERY familiar to Star Trek fans.
& it was @ Origins OH 2013 that I watched this game being taught & played!
That "shut the door" was taken from Origins, I was there!
This looks absolutely fantastic!
The shields mechanic remind me a bit of Galaxy Trucker
Wow wow wow =) . Oh is a 4 team variant with 2 game sets possible?
Looks like a fun frenzy!
Can you play this as a single team coop if you want? Like a dice version of Space Cadets?
Looks like a very fun game. My problem is I don't have enough friends that would like to play a game like that. Bummer. Good review Tom.

Most games clock in at 20-30 minutes, so it's quite a bit shorter than its older brother.
whats the ruling on crashing into each others ships?
does it work with an odd number of players?
I must play this
So are those minis. Is that Paramount knocking at the door?

ActiviztA1 Honesty, and having a good grasp of the rules.
I guess it is nice to not to have to add to or replace original game components in order for the game to work with the expansion.
Ok, this looks awesome.
On my wish list.
This review would be even better with a bit of actual game play thrown in. I suspect it can get a tad hectic...

No little girls were hit by dice during the filming of this video
Can you run your ship into your own mine, & in doing so, damage yourself?!
My god Tom, take a breath! lol
Looks stressful, so no thanks. Good review, though.
