Thanks for making this! While I don't always agree with your rankings, I really enjoy listening to why you rank them the way you do. Not everyone experiences a film the same way and that's wonderful. So many times I've rewatched films or episodes with fresh eyes after your reviews.

Best of the original films: X-Men 2
Worst of the original films: The Last Stand
Best of the Wolverine films: Logan
Worst of the Wolverine films: X-Men Origins Wolverine
Best of the 'prequel' films: Days of Future Past
Worst of the 'prequel' films: either Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix
Not sure which to put these in but the Deadpool films are my favourites (especially the post credits of Deadpool 2, definitely the one where he retcons the end of the X-Men Origins which is the closest thing we'll ever get to one of the storylines where he messes up the entire Marvel Universe).
Also a random fact about X2, while in a video promoting Quantum Break, Shawn Ashmore (actor of Iceman) said that he had so much free time on the set of X2 that he played through the entirety of Max Payne during production. Here's the link to the video I'm referencing: ruclips.net/video/b5CbH2tuIhs/видео.html another question that got asked was who would win out of the two characters with superpowers he played.

My Overall Ranking, 1 - 5 are strong films I could re-watch but thereafter it's just ranking the best out of films I'm OK living without:
    1) X-Men 2 - Perfect expansive story, cast, execution, tone, great ensemble & individual character storytelling, perfect respect for social themes and subtexts.
    2) X-Men - Strong story; very human and intimate, great cast, execution, tone, great ensemble & individual character storytelling, great respect for social themes and subtexts.
    3) X-Men: Days of Future Past - Great expansive story, cast, execution, great mixture of tones and great ensemble & individual character storytelling, great respect for themes.
    4) Logan - Perfect story; very human and intimate, great cast, execution and tone.
    5) Deadpool - Great fun story, perfect casting and great execution.
    6) X-Men: First Class - Great new take on the story, some good casting, nice new take on the tone, new take on the themes and overall pretty solid.
    7) X-Men: Dark Phoenix - Ignoring the mess of the timeline and its flaws, it was entertaining and still great ensemble x-men action.
    8) The Wolverine - Well made, nice interesting tone and intriguing story but just not what I look for in an X-Men film.
    9) Deadpool 2 - Well done like the first, but it's nothing interesting here story-wise, just a good funny spectacle.
    10) X-Men: Apocalypse - Hard to watch, a huge disappointment after 'Days of Future Past', some fun x-men action there at least but not enough to redeem it.
    11) X-Men: The Last Stand - Great cast and potential, it does have some good things and I have rewatched it for them, but what flaws it has - which are several - really drag it down. Its conclusion to what were 2 great, strong films is not only disappointing but just sours what could have been so great, so much I try to forget it ever happened.
    12) X-Men Origins: Wolverine - I've only seen it once, and while what few good things there may be I can't say I've ever fancied watching it again...

Not only did they fridge Vanessa but also taunted us for killing her as something never done before but many major sequels from the last few year has pulled something similar to squeeze out some kind of emotional response. I hated how D2 pretended to be so edgy but it was full of tropes.

My favourite is actually The Last Stand. I know I must be the only one but to me it was the perfect conclusion to the original trilogy. I can see the problems but beyond the bad direction, cheesy one-liners and the way they adapted the phoenix storyline (which I found it more interesting) it had a good script, it was very epic in scope and unlike most superheroes movies, this one had real consequences and I appreciate that.

Thank you! Your ranking is really similar to my opinions! I've never liked First Class THAT much and always wondered if I was crazy. I've always put X2 over Logan because it's just such a great X-Men team movie and that's what I want from my X-Men. The only difference is that I'd rank Deadpool 2 much higher and put DOFP in my top 3, I think. I love time travel shenanigans, no matter the plot holes.

Completely agree with your number 1 and 2 slots. X2 remains my all-time favorite, and Logan was such a masterpiece it had to be in one of the top slots. The rest... I'll admit I haven't seen the other two Wolverine movies or the Deadpool movies, so I haven't seen everything, but I personally enjoyed both Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix more than you did, so I'd have them higher. I think the original X-Men is still decent, when viewed as a product of its time, when the only really successful superhero movie to that point was Blade, and no one thought comic book costumes would work writ large for mainstream audiences.

  • @KierTheScrivener
    @KierTheScrivener 5 лет назад

I love the X-Men Franchise. X2 I do love but I don't know if I will put it first. I have been putting off watching Dark Phoniex. I also haven't watched the The Wolverine and Logan. I watched Origins and was turned off and though I love Jackman's portrayal I prefer the team dynamic. Or Deadpool which I know it is a cardinal sin. I just like my superheroes movies more on the light side and not in the R rated way.
But out of the three trilogies of X-Men, I would have to rewatch them again to know for sure but First Class and Days of Future Class are just so good. I always rewatch them with a notebook and saying 'man, I love this!"and the nostalgia and the call backs are perfect! I also like X2 a lot. I don't think Last Stand was as bad as people say, but it would be a toss up between X2, First Class and Days of Future Past but all for different reasons

I would give one more good point to Origins: it is the only movie with Gambit in it. Sure, it's not the best portrayal of Gambit, and he's underutilized, but at least he's there. Gambit is my favorite X-Men character, so I have to give the movie at least that.

  • @lorelei_lee
    @lorelei_lee 5 лет назад

I would rank Dark Phoenix and First Class differently, because I surprisingly enjoyed DP (maybe because I just didn't expect anything from it after Apocalypse) but REALLY disliked First Class! I just can't get over the portrayal of the Hellfire Club and the decision to make Moira a CIA (?) agent. Also: where is Scott? And since when is Alex the older brother and their parents still alive? Oh, don't get me started! I blame the decisions made in First Class for many things that are wrong in the following movies!
But nevertheless I agree with everything you said for each movie! And X2 is the best! I understand the changes they made regarding the source material and yet they managed to bring everything together! And thank you for giving The Last Stand a little credit and not just trashing it! The highs in that movie are high enough to watch it! Same with X-Men Origins - I could watch Liev Schreiber all day long!

I absolutely love Logan - for me it’s one of the best superhero films because it doesn’t necessarily feel like one - the character study of Logan at the end of his life is amazing - awesome film that I honestly thought was snubbed of at least a couple acting noms

X2 is definitely my favourite in terms of the balance of characters and spectacle. It wasn't the most EPIC but does everything well.
Jean's storyline was very well done and her sacrifice was a heartbreaker than promised soooooo much that the subsequent films could only disappoint.

My ranking (with the understanding that I'm NOT a Comic-Book Purist):
1.) Deadpool - "Time to gets some Chimichangas!" There may be objectively better X-Men films as far as quality goes (i.e. Logan), but I dare anyone to find an X-Men movie that is just as fun and exciting and turning all of the Hollywood Cliches on their head as Deadpool (Days of Future Past comes close, to be fair). Ryan Reynolds owns this character, and by this point he should. 1.) Because of the mega-disaster that was Origins Wolverine; and 2.) Deadpool is about to become a trilogy with the 3rd one that is well under-way as of this writing. It has the gore, it has the action, it has Deadpool's one-liners and personality, everything. Plot and story do take a back seat, but none of that matters, because you're having so much fun along the way that you don't care in the end. Hopefully, Deadpool 3 will retain the magic of the first without going full-on weird like the second, but we'll see what happens. Until then, Deadpool everybody!
2.) Logan - In terms of quality, this is definitely the best of the bunch by far. A lot of you expected this movie to be at #1, and I get why many of you would feel that way. As a film, it is indeed incredible. The only problem with Logan is that the re-watch value does take a dip because of how grim and unpleasant it is (even though that's the point). But even I cannot deny it's pure brilliance.
3.) Days of Future Past - Imagine this: You combine the best of the previous X-Men movies (including First Class) with Back to the Future levels of Time Travel. That is Days of Future Past in a nutshell. The title does admittedly sound confusing when you first read it. But when you watch the movie, not only does the title make more sense, but it is also some of the most fun and epic-feeling X-Men movies ever made. Some people say that this should have been the final X-Men film. In a lot of ways, they're not wrong considering that after this we got Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, and New Mutants. But we also got Logan and Deadpool after this movie, so you gain some and you lose some. Even if it's no longer the last X-Men movie, it still works on it's own and as an awesome companion piece to the previous entries (whether it's the Original X-Men timeline or the First Class timeline).
4.) First Class - I don't know if you noticed (maybe you already have), but Hollywood is obsessed with endless franchise reboots nowadays, and most of them turn out how you would expect them to. First Class was (and still is) almost the middle-finger to the idea that reboots should not only ignore the movies that came before it, but they should also really suck and piss off fans of the franchise. It's the anti-Ghostbusters 2016, if you will (before Ghostbusters 2016 was even a thing). This is what the X-Men movies needed after Origins Wolverine, and people accepted and even embraced it with open arms. While it is a really good movie though, I personally can't help but feel disconnected from it at times. I don't know if it has anything to do with the 60's vibe and setting (maybe it does), but it almost comes across as artsy and pretentious. It's not the most re-watchable X-Men movie on this list for me; you have to be in the right mood to sit down and watch it. But hey, at least it has Kevin Bacon as the villain, and he was fun! First Class definitely belongs in the top 5, but putting in the top 3 is a bit of stretch in my eyes (as far as my list goes; yours might be different).
5.) X-Men United - Out of all of the X-Men movies on this list, X2 is by far the one that's the hardest for me to pin down on how I actually feel about it. I will admit that it is miles better than the first one, both as a film and as a fun comic-book movie. As an X-Men movie, while you could certainly do a lot worse, this one just doesn't seem to click for me for some reason. You could tell that while they were trying harder than last time, it's still an early phase for the X-Men movies, so we're still not quite in outstanding territory yet. There are also some things the first one honestly does better than X2, mainly Hugh Jackman as Wolverine seemed to be more badass in the first one more than the second one (especially his introduction scene in the original). As a whole, X-Men United is good. It's really solid. But on a personal level, I'm still torn and conflicted about this thing.
6.) Original - I'm willing to bet that 99% of X-Men movie purists (not X-Men comic-book purists) have already declared this first movie a "classic". The thing is... that depends on your definition of the term "classic", because this is/was one of the most important Comic-Book Movies of the 2000's that helped propel the genre forward. But the Comic-Book Movie world has moved on since then, and watching it now feels like you went back in time nearly twenty years. It's also the only pre-9/11 X-Men movie, which explains why in the fight scene between Wolverine and Magneto... the Twin Towers are in the background and they never appear again after this one (there's no explanation needed for why that's the case). But because it's from the 2000's, and not from the 80's or 90's (or earlier), it's not old enough to be a true and timeless classic (like Batman 89 or Superman 78), unless you grew up with it and you have your nostalgia goggles on. But it's not new enough to feel fresh and exciting (like Endgame or No Way Home, or even Zack Snyder's Justice League). So... much like most first-entries in a long-running franchise, it is the most nostalgic for some people, and there's nothing wrong with that. But in terms of quality and fun factor, the X-Men movies since this one (for the most part) are either better as films or are just more accessible/fun to watch. The original X-Men, while not the worst, doesn't quite land in either of these areas.
7.) Deadpool 2 - Fun in the moment, but you're going to forget about it as soon as you either leave the theater or turn it off on your TV screen at home. It's just Deadpool 1 again, but the dial is turned up even more this time around. Sometimes it works out for the better, and sometimes it makes the movie worse. Oh, and Josh Brolin is in it. Can't go wrong with that.
8.) The Wolverine - Kind of a snooze-fest, but not the worst by any stretch. The last third is certainly bonkers and stupid, but at least that's where it gets more fun for me. The first two acts are better in terms of character development, and it is done well for the most part. But if you're not in to that stuff, you might as well take a nap through that portion of the film and then wake up when the final battle happens. Or just watch any other X-Men movie that's on this list (excluding Dark Phoenix, of course).
9.) The Last Stand - Without a doubt, this is the most frustrating movie on this list. Because there are seeds of really good ideas here, but the execution was just all over the place. It's fun, sure, but you can say that about any other of the other X-Men movies (ahem... *that aren't Dark Phoenix*). As is, it's just an up-and-down frustrating mess.
10.) Apocalypse - The definition (or one of the definitions) of a "Background-Movie". When you watch it and analyze it, the movie's not good at all. It's really not. It also has it's haters, just like a lot of the other X-Men movies. But, if you turn your brain off and try not to think about it, you might be able to squeeze some fun out of this one. There are just better and more fun X-Men movies to do that with, but you still could do a lot worse. (Again... Dark Phoenix, anyone?)
11.) The New Mutants - So much wasted potential here. Unfortunately, knowing the production history of this thing (with COVID and the realities of 2020 making it even more strenuous), it's not surprising it turned out the way that it did. It's better than it has any right to be (given the production hell it went through), while simultaneously not as good as it should have been, given the solid premise.
12.) Origins Wolverine - This movie is what RedLetterMedia's "Best of the Worst" Playlist was made for. Yes, the film is horrible, but it's so hilariously bad that you can't help but laugh at the pure insanity (especially in the first half). Also, now that Deadpool 1 and 2 are a thing (with a 3rd is currently in development), seeing Deadpool's mouth sewed up is not as anger-inducing compared to when it originally came out, even though it still was a terrible and baffling decision regardless. I can see hardcore X-Men Comic-Book loyalists being pissed off at this movie, but if you're in the right mindset as a moviegoer (not as a comic-book nerd) that loves watching bad movies, let's just say that you're in for a treat.
13.) Dark Phoenix - Every movie out there (no matter what it is) needs to have some merit/positive traits, or at least needs a good reason to exist story-wise (especially if it's in a well-established franchise, such as X-Men), or it just has to be enjoyable to watch for people that like to turn their brains off when watching movies. There has to be something (anything) if a movie wants to justify its existence somehow. Dark Phoenix doesn't do any of that. By the time it's over, you would have wished you had gotten 2 hours of your life back, because of the feeling that you had just wasted your time. If you want proof that FOX had no idea how to tackle the X-Men franchise, and why Marvel under Disney (for all their faults and mistakes, especially recently) owns this property now, look no further than Dark Phoenix. This is a movie that is made for nobody, other than studio executives (but it also bombed, so really it has absolutely no audience whatsoever). It's not even laughably bad like Origins Wolverine, it's just BAD (and boring... and pointless... and most importantly, NOT FUN). There's just not much else to even say.

I agree with you about X-2, it is definitely a great movie and the best X-men film. I love the scenes when the school is a attacked and you get just a little taste of the different powers all the students have. Plus Wolverine going after the soldiers and tearing them apart. I think that the whole sequence is my favorite out of all of the films. Rogue was always my favorite X-men character, so I have a bias against X-3 and X-Men Days of Future Past because of that. I hated that she took the cure... well not that she took a cure (I can kinda understand it with her powers) by that they made it seem like she took the cure for a boy... especially a boy that was almost cheating on her (defiantly emotionally cheating on her at the very least). I grew up on the 90s animation of X-Men and that Rogue was always so independent and strong. To see a version of Rogue take the cure for that reason. Ugh... (And I do get that they tried to say at the end she took it for herself, but when all of the story shown in the film says she took it for a boy, it just seems like lip service) And the Future Past film, if they hadn't used Rogue in the marketing of the film, and made it seem like she had a part in it, I probably would have loved it. But I kept waiting for her to appear... and nothing. It made the film a disappointment for me, and I found it hard to separate that feeling from how I feel about the film in general. But I do understand why everyone likes that film.

I finally saw Logan over the weekend. It's a very good movie, but the really cliched ending knocked it down my list a few spots even if I get the point. Everything else about it is really well done though, and the very last scene actually did make me very slightly emotional.

It was unique and different in a world that can be familiar and bland
Despite having some flaws, it had some great highs, even leading to the tv shows Gifted and Legion(which stand out compared to other marvel shows)

I always tend to be optimistic when I start watching a film or a TV-series and I can often easily overlook the bad stuff. But X-Men Dark Phoenix was the first of the X-Men films where I felt a bit...meh. Even with Apocalypse I felt that at least the beginning was promising but Apocalypse was far too less a powerful god-like Mutant and the action was predictable. It was the total opposite wir Dark Phoenix for me: meh, flat but with nice action, especially Magneto at the end.

I would switch 1 and 2 only for personal preference. And I drop First Class lower. That movie annoys me in so many little ways. Havok being the older brother, Darwin's death, Emma and Shaw's portrayal both in actions and motivations. Only McAvoy and Fassbender make that movie completely watchable.

    12) Days of Future Past. As a Kitty Pryde fan, I HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEE this movie. I loathe it. I would rather sit through a Trump rally than watch this. It makes me furious that her story was given to Wolverine and she was little more than an extra.
    11) The Last Stand. The only thing they got right was Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Ellen Page as Shadowcat. Both of whom were criminally underused.
    10) Apocalypse. Totally agree. It exists. That's all you can say about it.
    9) X-Men. It tries to avoid being a corny comic book movie, and ends up being a corny comic book movie because of it.
    8) Dark Phoenix. I haven't seen it yet, which automatically makes it better than the previous ones.
    7) Wolverine: Origins. They got quite a bit right. Really, if it weren't for the finale (and specifically Wade Wilson's treatment), it could actually be a good movie. Not great, but at least up a spot or two.
    6) The Wolverine. Agreed, the first 2/3 was great. The last 1/3, kind of predictable & silly.
    5) First Class
    - A cool new take, and they did pretty well capturing the younger versions, but not enough to build a franchise on. McAvoy and Fassbender were good, but compared to Stewart and McKellen, no one can compete.
    4) Deadpool 2 - I'll address Vanessa. I don't think they "fridged" her. My hope is that they finish up the arc, and she is revealed to be the personification of Death.
    3) Logan - I'm sad that the other characters never got a fitting end the way Logan did, but for him, it was a great farewell.
    2) X-Men United - A great movie, but not one that screams for a rewatch. They hit the mark with what they tried to do, but I think they played it way too safe in terms of story.
    1) Deadpool - They did everything they set out to do perfectly. They really captured the character and tone of the comic, it was fun to watch, and worth rewatching.

    I only disagree with 2
    switch Deadpool and X2
the reason is simple and the same thing you pointed out with X1 X2 is still ashamed of what it is. Even first-class is to an extent. No thats why Deadpool is number 1 for me, it's the first one to be Proud of what it is to be completely unashamed of what it is. If you want to use the Queer analogy X2 is the Out person who just wants so desperately to blend in, who would use their powers to pass for normal if they could. Deadpool is the Pride parade.

That one *nonsensical* retcon is *emblematic* of all of the weakass fan-service, """"clever"""" history 101 winks, and other retcons that *drenched* that movie. Ok I liked dark phoenix the new one it was quite good yes it had problems but I just love the new cast. I loved the magneto scene was brilliant in apocalypse, loved Levi as Logan’s brother, last stand I loved the eradication of mutants with the cure it felt real as if mutants were to live in our world someone would try to do that out of fear, magneto was right all along, Loved both deadpools xmen 2 was great, days of future past was alright like what he said it should have been the last film , have to say first class is my absolute fav haven’t seen Logan yet but from what I hear I know I will really like it
