    As to glue vs tape for tubulars, the tape is supposed to use a few more watts, apparently, but I run tape as I ride my tubulars everywhere. The problem with glue is, it hardens over time. Especially if not ridden like race wheels (in the off season). Then they get out the tubulars next year, and the glue has hardened (doesn’t flex anymore) and lets go off the rim due to the riding action. Tape does the opposite, the longer it stays on the more it gets spread and sticks. It never goes hard. So glue if you want to race, but change every season, or tape for general or long term use.

    I ride tubulars and one time I actually fitted a tubular tyre on a clincher rim when a friend of mine slashed his clincher tyre! It worked to get him home the next 30k!

      This is exactly what we used to do before mounting new tubular tires. Instead of pumping up a tubular and let it sit for a day to stretch, we fit them on clincher rims and ride them. This can be a very good trick.

    Glue 3M Fast tack if still around. Designed for auto trim work. Tufo tape for years. Great tires from them as well.

    About lubing the chain: do not apply lube but wax.
    Wax hardly attracts dirt and it has the lowest friction of all ‘lubes’.

    For chain skipping across the cassette also check for chain stretch, 1st indication of chain stretch is missed shifts

    I used tubuless tires on standard road wheels for road and ‘cross for several years. I never had a problem with safety over very many miles. I now have some American Classic wheels that are tubeless specific. I can tell you the tires are much more firmly seated into the tubeless specific rim. On the other hand I also have tubeless 700X28C tires on my Zipp 404’s. I don’t have any concerns leaning into any corner at any speed. And they are sooo nice on the rough roads.

    If you don't mind the oily residue, car lube thinned with mineral spirits is a very effective chain lube. Use it with a little oiler to avoid the mess, roll in into the chain well and then wipe off excess. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than any wet lube you can buy.

    @benjamdm I second checking your hanger alignment. I've had this problem a few times and if everything else seems right, every time the hanger has been off some. I've found this to be when I was having trouble in the middle of the cassette, recheck the limit screws after adjusting the hanger too.

    Been using Carogna tape for a couple years now and will never glue again. Super strong bond, no issues.

    Carogna Tape the best thing that happened for tubulars. Resists hundreds of deg C, easy to remove pulling ( not side to side rolling) no cleanup, and 5 min to apply. 24 hr for best cure... awesome

    Regarding the disc/rim brake combo, you could run a cable disc up front and a rim in the back & that would eliminate your concerns about differing lever feeling. Granted, cable discs aren't as good as hydraulic, but if one really wanted to run this then that's one way they could.

    Been using tape for 3 years. They have come a long way and I'd argue that they are (two brands I love) as safe as glue if not safer nowadays. With the benefit of leaving 0 mess behind and being able to take off old tires, install new ones and ride within 30 mins (as opposed to a few days). I JUST took an old tire off of my tubular wheels cause they were squared off. They were bound REALLY strong on the wheels and took a lot of effort. That should tell you how safe they are. BTW 2 brands I prefer are Caden Wheels tape (from australia) and effetto mariposa carogna. In that order.

      @@Armurp01 My spare tire is Tufo Elite Jet (21 mm I think). While I would never ride that regularly, it's fine as a spare tire to complete your ride and get you home! The advantage is they fold VERY compact. Almost as small as an inner tube. So it fits my small saddle bag. One tip though instead of a square shaped saddle bag you need one that needs to be skinnier / longer. But a small one will definitely do the trick. Still fits my Co2 / inflater and multitool as well!

      @@8rk thanks for the tip.....when you do replace the tire, is your tape still on there or does that get removed too when putting on the spare.....just had a blowout on a tubular and I need ideas for a spare otherwise I'm switching to clinchers lol.... Haven't had the best of luck with tubulars since getting into this as of recent but I like how they ride and the easiness of using tape.

      ​@@Armurp01 when you remove the tire, tape is stuck onto the tire most of the time. the "tire side" of the tapes (at least the two i mentioned) are designed to be stronger than the rim side. With the Caden tape I've had it stuck to rim too but it really doesn't matter. With use of a heat gun or hair dryer, removing the tape is SUPER easy and clean. Almost 0 residue so your rim looks brand new. On the road, if the tape is left stuck on the rim, it doesn't matter. Even better actually for added protection. If it does go off with the tire, you just install the spare with no tape and take it easy on descends / turns. Go 75% the speed you normally would. the tire pressure is 75% of what's holding the tire tight on the rim. Tape / glue is to do the rest and secure it.
      I definitely prefer the feel and weight of tubular setup. I use Veloflex tires (25 or 28mm ProTour (not the race version)) They are light, very grippy and the last time I had a flat was in 2017 I believe!

    At about 4:00 you mentioned there was no problems with tubulars. I have the 03' TdF on DVD. And in a mountain stage Beloki has his tire come off his rim in a decent. And Lance behind him goes into the grass to avoid hitting him. Check it out. Thanks.

    I’ve run tubeless on my CX bike and my mountain bikes using both tubeless and even non-tubeless tyres and non-tubeless rims many times without any issues. They tend to require much more sealant and can be a pain to seat without a compressor but you can get them to work effectively. I’ve never used proper rim tape either, I use Gorilla tape which works fine. I did try a non-tubeless tyre on a tubeless road rim once but that specific combination wasn’t overly successful, they would go flat overnight more often than not.

    With Stages Shimano power meters, the thing to remember is that even though the Hollowtech II interface is the same on 105/Ultegra/Dura Ace, the drive side crank arms are stiffer as you go up the range, so the strain gauge on the left arm might not match the actual power of the right arm. But having said that, does it really matter? I'd be more bothered that the arms don't match (OCD alert)

    re. mixing & matching Stages left-hand PM crankarm with a different crankset. Broke an XT crankset by putting an XTR stages left-hand crank arm on it. XTR crankarm was like 12mm skinnier than the XT/SLX crankarm. The shimano spindle has grooves cut into it where the crankarm clamps; I had something like 12mm of these grooves with nothing clamped on. (I was also having to do some weird shimming of the BB to make the crankset not wiggle - wish I'd looked more closely when I was doing that) I think I made it about a thousand km before the crank spindle cracked in half while standing on the pedals. Anyway, if you do mix & match different shimano crank arms, make sure they're really the same width before you use intermix.

    well, my old sora short cage mech works with a 11-34t sram 9spd mtb cassette. sure the 34t cog flexes the cage quite a lot but the chain works just fine and it didn't fall off or get stuck between the spokes and casette

    i am using sram red 10 speed front and rear mech with sram red 11 speed shifter, working flawlessly. well you will need to expand the front mech cage with a 0.5mm spacer to get rid of chain rub when you are using the big-big/ small-small combo.
    and for loose bb bearing, dont waste money on anything else, get yourself an enduro torqtite cup and you are good to go.

    Hi all. Q: How hard should I tighten my cleats? I saw a vid with Si and he used a 5nm key, but that’s just not enough for the clear to stay in place in the pedal. Shoes are Bontrager XXX LE and pedals are Shimano Tiagra.

    Love the new channel! Question on tubeless maintenance... what is required at regular intervals to keep my road/ cx tubeless operating flawlessly? I flatted not long ago after 7-8 months, and the sealant was dried up... how often should it be topped off/ changed altogether? Anything else required?

    I've used both glue and tape and they both work fine. Glue is lighter, but tape is quicker.

    A helicoil is a great option. I had used couple of helicoils both in my nds crank arm and the rear derailleur guide pulley axle. However, I can't forget the feeling when I incorrectly set my torque wrench when tightening the pedal. The crank was a right-out- of-the-box Quarq power meter. Eventually I replaced it with a new one which SRAM exchanged for free after I wrote an email. Great great company !!!

    I don't get why people still keep going with the discussion that using disc brakes is for more power. Anyone who has used rim brakes knows it's not that difficult to block the wheel and skid. The point is about how much control you have between pad contact and blocking of the wheel, which is far superior in disc brakes, also working way better in wet conditions. And I say that being a rim brake user, because I prefer the cheaper maintenance, lower weight and more aerodynamic profile.

    I've done a tubeless conversion on non-tubeless rims with non-tubeless tyres. Just tape up the spoke holes and use enough sealant.

    Regarding the question about tubeless conversions (TR tire on regular rim) - I have Oval 327 wheels on my cx bike, and have successfully converted them (2 seasons). They're more finicky to setup... it is all about the bead shelf!!

    If you actually want to use a disc brake on the front and a rim brake on the rear, SRAM makes hydraulic rim brakes that can be used with the same levers on both brakes.

    Question about tubeless tires. What to carry if anything for repairs? Long rides and triathlon races. I am thinking a small hand pump, but i a 40K time trial a puncture bad enough to require more air may well mean the day is done, so why carry extra weight?

    Regarding the rim vs disc brake hood comparison, they'll only be / feel different if one is cable and the other is hydraulic. There are cable disc brakes and hydraulic rim brakes available, so you could match the set of brifters.

    Stages Ultegra v. 105 crank arm: I believe the Ultegra arm is lighter than the 105, so the crank would not be balanced after mixing. Does that matter? It might be a PITA when working on the bike on a stand if the crank always rotates so the right arm is down. Also, why spend money on a Stages one-sider when the price of complete (both sides) PMs are not much higher? My experience with Stages is that they're not as accurate as other PMs and the accuracy is futher complicated by left-right imbalances (nobody is exactly 50-50 all the time).

    Tom, with a helicoil you drill it out and cut new threads in the size they tell you for use with the final threads you want to have, then using a tool, you take the helicoil and turn it into the newly cut threads and break off the tab and it's done. There's no gluing involved last I checked.

    I ride the track and just mounted some Vittoria Pista Control on my Carbon disc. I used mastic glue this time and found that, after two coats on both the rim and the tire, the glue never got tacky. I let both sit over night with the final coats applied before mounting. Should they have felt tacky upon application?

    Last year in some US race (not sure if California) a tubular came of a young American rider in a corner after a descent less than a km before the line. Needless to say he was in a break...

    I used tub tape with no issue for an entire race season, racing mostly criteriums. It's so much easier to center and stretch the tub properly, it's way quicker, and way less messy. Just make sure the rim is properly cleaned before. Thankfully my bicycle was stolen (FML) and I replaced my expensive carbon tubs with expensive clinchers (Yay), no more tape vs glue debate now.

    John, motorbike brakes are operated with hand and foot! both feel very different and theres no problem, so I don't see why a race bike could not run disc front/direct mount rim brake rear.

    "Car gear lube" is automatic transmission oil, it is a thin oil. Used it for hundreds of thousands of km on motorcycle with injector oiler, does the job great but a mess. Not tried on bike, not even on my list to try at this stage. Would try the cleaner aerosol sprays like the WD Lithium first, they are becoming popular amongst moto.

    I have a Trek Madone with BB90 for the bearing question. That scenario is quite frequent and my bearings can be removed and pressed in quite easily. I have not noticed any issues as I just replaced the OE bearings with Enduro Ceramics and they fit somewhat loosely as well. Spins like a top...

      The bb90 bearings should be snug in the frame. They have an issue of letting water in on the NDS. When the bearing gets corroded it starts turning in the frame damaging the bb shell. So trek came up with the v2 bearing to fit the woren shell. Personally i check mine every few months and install them with loctite assembly compound.

      Oh and those "Mobike" share-bikes in Manchester have a disk in the back only, drum brake in the front. Weight (along with performance) was obviously the least concern in the design of the things, main aim maintenance-free operation.

    I had a rear derailleur that wouldn't index the two biggest sprockets no matter what I did when I started a ride it wouldn't shift, then I found out my "friends" had been adjusting the barrel adjustor and limit screws whenever I index it.

    The only reason why those BB90 V2 bearings exist is because of shoddy bottom bracket tolerances on behalf of the frame manufacturer.

    #askgcntech How much do you guys recommend just buying a frameset and configuring a roadbike myself. I just want to try a build a new roadbike rather than just buy one because I like building stuff myself ;)

    So I'm new to tubulars, I don't ride outside too much. Only on race days, are those sealants from TUFO etc a solution if I'd get a smaller puncture during a Triathlon/Race ? With tubulars I obviously can't switch as fast as if I'd have clinchers.

    i was hoping there would be a clear answer on the tape vs glue debate. i am using glue now, but i find cleaning and removing old glue from carbon rim to be a pain in the arse. so i'm thinking to use tufo tape. question is, for my veloflex that has some left over glue on there, would it be ok to use tape over it? or would i need to remove the old glue from the base tape before mounting with tape? the rim has been cleaned off.. took me 3 days...argh

    For the 10 hub you can use a campangolo cassette 11 speed - it will fit on 10 speed hubs

    My shifting has become hard. I may have internally crossed cables when replacing. Is there an easy way to see if this is so? They're a nightmare to re-route!

    Question on tubular repair... I use valve extenders on Campy wheels and I’m afraid an over aggressive tightening of the extender has caused the primary presto valve to work loose from the tire. Catastrophic flat unable to be repaired on the road - has to call for a car to get home. Sealant doesn’t help. Can this be repaired? Or am I in the market for a replacement tire... thanks for any help.

    The guy with shifting problems between top 2 easiest gear has a b tension screw problem. He has almost certainly has a 1x drivetrain and these need the top jockey wheel to be as close to the largest cog as possible,(think SRAM eagle needs a special alignment tool, but is also the case fo1x11 to a lesser extent) wind that b tension screw out till you hear the jockey wheel hit the cassette between shifts of easiest gears then wind in slowly till the noise goes. Now the detailer is as close as possible without touching and perfect shifting.

    Most rims are tubeless convertable. If tyre is not seating on the rim, the rim is hardly tubless compactable. There are almost no non tubless compactable rims, but use the correct tyre (tubeless ready)

    Disc Upfront and Direct Mount on the Rear could work with mechanical disc break, lever hood differences would be eliminated.

    Question for you. My Canyon Inflite CF SLX 9 is nice and quiet except when in the 3rd smallest cassette. My local bike shop adjusted it one but didn't seem to last. Any suggestions.

    If you want a cheap Lube alternative, don’t use car Lube. But you can try chainsaw Lube which is closer to bike chain Lube and a fraction of the cost

      But bicycle lube is very affordable and goes a long way. Tri Flow is a good all condition lube.

      sewing machine oil is cheap and very similar to the thin bike lubes and it works pretty well but if you want really cheap and the lowest friction you should wax the chain as it will also prolong the life of drive train quite a lot compared to using oils, with the chainsaws industry is moving towards the natural vegetable oils because the oil gets thrown on the user from the saw and can cause skin issues

    Hi, what do think about using a 'roadlink' the rear derailleur hanger extension which is used to fit larger rear cassettes instead of buying a long cage rear mech. Loads of riders here in Thailand use them for the mountains, fitting huge cassettes, are they safe ?or any other drawbacks that you know of ? Cheers really enjoy the Tech channel.

    A tech question on disk brakes. I've seen a number of comments online and SM about a potential problem when taking a disk brake equipped bike on a plane. Some people [inc a pro-mechanic] suggest some brands of brakes need bleeding after a flight! Is this true? If so what brands? Does this explain the relative lack of pros riding with disk brakes still e.g. Trek suggested they were going to focus on disk brakes this year but most of the pro riders are still using callipers?

    We convert standard dirt bike wheels to tubeless tires without issues bit I can't speak on tubeless bikes.

      Matthew Lawrence to find the chain you need I feed the the chain through the entire drive train including the cassette and pulleys, the. Add a small c wire to hold the chain together under the bike. Now you can still pedal a little back and forth without cutting the chain while dialing in the current amount of chain. A shorter chain will not allow smooth big big combos as the derailleur will be stressed to the max. So a larger chain will make the derailleur in the small small sections sit further back so make sure the chain does not rub up against the upper pulley if using small small combos. A longer chain will also make less noise if you use it as wet ( adding wet lube and immediately riding like that)
      drive. That is currently what I found to be the best riding for speed and also very quiet drive, the only issue is the chain must be cleaned immediately right after every ride. This is a non issue since it has quick links it takes 2 minutes to take out and clean the chain. This is something that expensive bikes should not have!! How can a 250$ POS road bike have zero drive train noise compared to a 7000$ road bike lol. The key is using a wet chain and also 8 speed freewheels or cassettes, as soon as you move to a thinner chain for 10+ speeds it will make more noise no doubt about it. I have 2 bikes on my channel one makes ZERO noise and the other clearly makes more noise, the Carbon one is the noisier one!! Lmao.

    #askgcntech I had a creak on my bike that I figured out was from my rear wheel. It's not related to my cadence or power, and when I took my cassette off I noticed my freehub had some pretty bad teeth marks. What could cause creaking in my rear wheel (already lubed all my contact points where the spokes rub each other)?

    6800 shifters + 6700 RD: wouldn't the main concern be the travel distance of the RD, not the indexing? the RD is simply a slave, it isn't indexed, itself. as long as a 6800 cogset was used the setup should, hypothetically, work, right?

    how can I check if my bike will have enough clearance for 28mm wide tyres before actually buying (or borrowing) a pair and fitting them? Currently use 25mm but was thinking of trying out 28mm when I next replace them

      Bicycle Quarterly says you should have 3mm minimum clearance. If you have at least 4.5mm now, the 28s should fit fine. The main problem is that claimed widths aren't trustworthy.       Go ask your local bike shop to try on some tires. If you’re willing to buy them there, they should able to help. I am thinking about putting some gravel tires on my old wheels...they said to bring everything in and then we’ll see how large I can go on the wheels and frame. Even if you spend a little more this first time, at least you’ll know it’s right and then can order cheaper ones next time.

    I avoid the carbon tubular glue as it sets fast so you do not have time to adjust the tubular and get it perfectly positioned. Never had any problem with the regular glue going soft when hot

    This summer i will go for a Transalp. Because i'm from nothern Germany i have no expiriences in riding high mountains. For safety reasons i want to take a 11-32 cassette. But now i'm wondering if I can upgrade my rear deraillieur to an Ultegra R8000 GS. Does it work with my Ultegra 6800 lever?

    Hi guys,
    Some days ago i was looking at Aero bikes online, and found out that the Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 8.0 allows on the front a max of 23mm tires, but i'm sure i've seen 25's both in the pro peloton and in some of your videos. So, does it actually allow them or it's just my mistake? Anyway, what does, generally speaking, determine wich is the maximum tyre width for a frame?

    I’d rather glue than tape
    But if I’m using tape I’d go with Tuffo over jantex any day of the week .
    Jantex is double sided carpet tape ( it’s not but you get the picture)
    Tuffo is a ribbon of glue that’s easy to fit and remove but fantastic hold

    #askgcntech Hi. I have a set of Hope tech XC pro 4 29r wheels which I would like to put 28mm tyres on. What would be the min and max tyre size I can get on there with the allowable frame clearance? I would like thin tyres for commuting and crits and thicker tyres for bikepacking.

    Hi Jon. Really enjoying the tech channel with so much more tech focused content than before on the GCN channel.
    I recently bought an FSA Powerbox which is based on BB386EVO. My bike has a BB30, but came with an FSA SL-K Light (BB386EVO) with the spacers etc. I fitted the Powerbox with the spacers in exactly the same order that I took them off the SL-K, but now I am getting an annoying clicking sound in the small ring with the 2 or 3 cogs at the top of the cassette. The sound is coming from the chain engaging with the chainring. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

    And yes, patch the tubeless tire from the inside. In my experience that latex "seal" never lasted too long.

    #askgcntech - I have a couple of 5mm cuts on the crown of a "newish" GP4000 II tyre. I have tried the superglue method but the cuts opened up again on the next ride.
    Is there an alternative method to save the tyre or is it a new tyre?

      Jesse Uriostegui any brand should be good, i use Miyata (expensive) on my rear wheel and Velox Jantex (cheap) on my front tyre and they both work the same. Just make sure it’s the right width for your rim

    I don't think disc front with rim rear is a good idea, but using 160 front brakes and 140 rears is smarter than 160 throughout.

    Giant Bicycles says no to converting non tubeless ready wheels. Just bought a new Defy Advanced and wanted to convert to tubeless. Asked Giant customer service and they strongly recommended not to convert for safety.

    #askgcntech how do people set the front derailleur height for a non-circular front chain ring (e.g. oval)? Is there any worry of the chain falling more frequently than a circular chain ring?

      Peter Lee been running Rotor Q Rings for years now and have only recently dropped a chain as I neglected to tell my bike shop that I used for a quick tune up while out of town that I am running a compact double with a Triple STI shifter allowing to literally shift the chain off the big ring.
      As for setting derailleur height, it's exactly the same as a circular ring in regards to minimum spacing. But be sure to set that spacing when the ring is at its biggest, lest you run the big ring into the derailleur.

      Old I know, but it's normal, those tyres have latex tubes. Latex has many advantages, but a disadvantage is that it won't hold air pressure very long.
