Thanks to Ryan to make this kit. It make it possible for me to build this great cabinet ready to play with. Maybe this is the first Porta Pi north of the arctic circle :-)
Ordered my cabinet yesterday after viewing this video. Looks great! Thanks for putting this out there. Oh and I may be your oldest customer! ;) What I would really love to see is the top face plate as an acrylic so a back light could be put in and a graphic overlay on the outside. Probably a pain but it would be cool.
what a video i like to do all this stuff but in my country nothing is available and nobody doing this I like your presentation rayan you are very talented.
That was awesome! I just got a pi3 and thought I could, but could not find anything to ensure that I could just wire buttons and joystick directly to the pi. Every other video I came across used an ipac or one of the other boards that was then plugged in to the pi via usb. Thanks for this.
This is true assembly video to the current design. If you're considering buying one of my kits, this is what you can expect:) kits: www.retrobuiltgames.com/diy-kits-shop/porta-pi-arcade-wood-kit-9/
+Spicky GR what about just clicking the link to the homepage??? for europe, expect the price plus shipping and then add about 20% for taxes, it is a lot :-/
Hello, i don't really get what is in the Full kit, can you say me wat is in it. and do you ship to the Netherlands to?? (i already looked at your website)
Here's another Mini DIY Arcade cabinet video ruclips.net/video/ff4tHEDpjEU/видео.html No need for a Raspberry Pi for this build, it uses a multi-game JAMMA board.
+Danny Corona thanks Danny. Here's a slightly different DIY arcade you can do. It's simpler as it does need a Raspberry Pi. ruclips.net/video/ff4tHEDpjEU/видео.html
bro you are genius Great Job.How Much Coast if i wanna made for me one like this ? and can i play any game of my choise on it ?.THANK YOU and congratulations for the amzing video
I would like to buy your kit but there are parts of the full kit I need to remove I only need the monitor and speakers with there components. and a blank button bord (no pre drilled joystick or button holes) is there a way to get this
Hey Ryan, do you sell wiring kits for setting up 2 players for the Raspberry Pi 2? The part I'm stuck on is what brand/type joystick setup is ideal, what wiring kits I need (something about Jamma looms?), and how to connect to the GPIO for Raspberry Pi 2? Also a link to where you bought your speaker/amp kit would be great. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
zer08927 I do not sell wiring kits. Joystick type comes down to preference. No need for JAMMA connectors. Some .187" female crimp connectors and female/female jumper wires will get the job done when connecting to the RPi's GPIOs. Check the Bill of Materials in my manual. Has all the part numbers and websites for this + speakers and amplifier.
Hey man, impressive work. When you are wiring the buttons there are 3 connectors: one is for the ground, the second is for the actual action and left the third one free, for what is the third conector?
I wonder if you can help me I have a few questions I want to use a bigger screen about a 19 inch but only want one wire coming out not an extension socket and can I use a arcade power supply to a raspberry pi3 and can I hook the wire harness to the raspberry pin out header
can i order this in complete set?and i will assemble it on my own...how much this cost?u got great mind man its awesome..it brings me back my childhood time!hahaha..
Do you prefer the 3 in 1 wire crimper, cutter, strippers or having a separate tool for each? Just wondering. I have to stock up on some tools if I'm going to build this.
+Jonny I prefer separate tools that are dedicated to performing one job. I use them nearly every day, so there's my bias to account for. I can say the crimper tool performs so much better than the crimping part on the 3in1, primarily bc the lever action is way easier (less force needed) with the added mechanics and the jaw actually crimps, not 'crushes' the crimp terminals.
Hey Ryan I was just wondering if I used 2x 2ohm8watt speakers which amplifier board should I get as well as in the BOM there is two types of amplifier boards do I need both? if not which one is better, and I also saw there is a requirement for the 5vdc 2a and 12vdc 1a, what is the 12vdc one for?
Do I need a specific image to get the buttons to go straight to hte GPIO? I have retro pi set up, it works with a keyboard. I just got some buttons wired up but want to seeif I just plug them into the GPIO and it will work, or you have a config file.
Hey Ryan do you ship to europe? i want to order one of your wood cabinets. Can you tell me which soundboard you use for the speakers , I cant seem to find it.
+Brian Hamilton I use 22AWG. You could use 24 or 26, but I stick to 22 because I need to fill the diameter of the crimp connector. 24 or 26AWG might slip out after being crimped.
davidson2727what Thank you! I have a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. I starting building arcades in college for fun, so this arcade is culmination of both.
Hi I have no idea about computing or emulators or even just anything about this. I looked at your website but idk how to get the stuff on. Also isn't emulating copying and so it is illegal? That's what I thought. Love the idea any way!
+Hannah Mansfield emulators are not illegal, but selling/distributing roms is. I sell arcade hardware. You might want to read up on the topics... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console_emulator#Legal_issues
Hello Ryan, just discovered this amazing project. I am new to Raspberry Pi so I wonder if it would be too difficult to add bluetooth controller for second player (after adding and configuring bluetooth module for R.Pi). It should be matter of changing key setting in system options, or?
mrsmashcz That's really all you need to do. There are built-in scripts that will help you configure the controls with prompts. Just use a popular/compatible USB bluetooth dongle and it should be simple.
KidCommentatorHD you'll need connect the wiring harness to the Pi (about 10 minutes) download the image and write to SD card (varies with internet speed), and then put some roms on it. That's it.
Went to the website but can not figure out how to order. Was on my iPad, does that make a difference? No add to cart buttons or anything? Help would be appreciated :)
Do you have a video on how you set up the emulator on your raspberry pi? I know you download the Pi OS, then you download Raspian I believe. Using your GPIO cable layout, when I plug in the connecters, will it already be configured properly (i.e. your A button is A on the Pi) or did you need to program anything? Great video, Ive watched it 3-4 times. I am going to build one soon and am trying to make sure I understand everything 100% so I reduce chance of error.
+Brian Hamilton You can download Retropie here blog.petrockblock.com/retropie/retropie-downloads/ OR if you wanted an older version of RetroPie with the GPIOs configued to take arcade controls just like this video, get that here www.retrobuiltgames.com/porta-pi-arcade-help/porta-pi-software-os-download/ My page also has instructions for basic configuration
Hey ! I'm actually interested in your kit, just a question.. If i had a model B rpi, is there a layout for those GPIO pins??, do I have to use your RetroPie image ? or any is good?, do I need to install an extra module on the image (so it takes the buttons directly)? Awesome project btw

+ccgsales that and in this vid I did not connect a straight ground from the amplifier to raspberry pi. - kills the hum entirely. There is a difference in ground potential between the two boards as they both have independent voltage regulators on them.
Ryan Bates thanks for the clarification. Great piece of work. I was thinking of making a full sized arcade machine at a local maker studio with a big cnc router. I had never heard of the Pi with the emulator before. Thanks again... great vid.

Good stuff man. I wish I had the knowledge to pull off this kind of stuff.
Hey I need help with mine. None of the buttons are registering on the PI please help!
amazing video thanks, that video is one hour long, it would take me a month to do that!
I would like to buy your kit but there are parts of the full kit I need to remove I only need the monitor and speakers with there components. and a blank button bord (no pre drilled joystick or button holes) is there a way to get this

hello i'm a total newbie on this kinda thing, may i ask you the reference of the amplifier you're using ? anyway fascinating video, great job !
I Go With The Octagonal Joystick, Because It Has More Room. But Nice Job. 👍👍
Where do I get the sheet of paper for the button hookups.
what amplifier do u use for this project?
You have ignited a DIY fire within me. Hoping your store front reopens soon so I can purchase a kit.
I shall gather tools in the meantime.
(And barrow a few from work, lawl)

When i wire arcade button to GPIO, Do I have to mapping it in Retorpie ?
Hello Ryan, where can I get the image than you print on paper to help to conect the wires to the gpio of the raspberry pi 3.
Thanks in advance.
can i order this in complete set?and i will assemble it on my own...how much this cost?u got great mind man its awesome..it brings me back my childhood time!hahaha..
Hey Ryan!!! Will you be updating your image for the Raspberry Pie 2?
Yes I will.
Ryan Bates When could we be expecting a release for that updated image?
about 1 week I think.
I managed to get the first of two images uploaded today.
Ryan Bates Fantastic. I will give it a try. Thank you.

+Bionic Cinema The build is flexible, that's why there are alternates/ substitutes in the BoM. The 12V PSU is for led backlight marquee cabinets.
How do you setup Retropie to map the GPIO input on the emulator buttons?
Is it like setting up a gamepad? (= "hold button to configure gamepad")
holy shit i thought i was watching vsauce for a second
Hey VSauce, Michael here. xD
That image u use for the gpios conections...does it work for RP3 and all versions of RetroPie? Where can i get it? Thanks.
+Iglyson Silva I made a PRi3 image.www.retrobuiltgames.com/porta-pi-arcade-help/porta-pi-software-os-download/
for when porta Pi Lite port will be ready

I have retro pi set up, it works with a keyboard. I just got some buttons wired up but want to seeif I just plug them into the GPIO and it will work, or you have a config file.
+Brian Hamilton Yes you do, otherwise you will harm the Pi. OR you can add "retrogame" from Adafruit to your image to add the functionality.
Hey Ryan do you ship to europe? i want to order one of your wood cabinets.
Can you tell me which soundboard you use for the speakers , I cant seem to find it.
Cassio Cruz I do. www.parts-express.com/2x2w-at-4-ohm-class-d-audio-amplifier-board--320-306
Hey there. Awesome video.
Quick question.
What AWG do you use for your wiring? Do you know if there is a prefered AWG, or what will not work with it?
+Brian Hamilton I use 22AWG. You could use 24 or 26, but I stick to 22 because I need to fill the diameter of the crimp connector. 24 or 26AWG might slip out after being crimped.
wait..what glue did u use to stick?
Is their a link to the GPIO image
Hi !
Awesome little bartop !
I'll put your video on my forum bartopmaniadotcom, if
you don't mind, and a link to your site.
Keep going !
what company sells the stick and buttons?

The link in the description doesn't work any more. Can you update this?

Most of the japanese buttons are quieter. Check Sanwa or Seimitsu brand for this
Thanks! I'll be able to build one now without going mad. : )
Is there different games you can put on there?
lazerboygames Yup!
If I buy a fully assembled one do I get the Sd card with all the games
no
Just the way you say "Theeeee". Omg 34:56
I thought the raspberry Pi required pull-up or pull-down resistors to connect buttons to the GPIO...
Internal (built-in) Pullup resistors are activated by the retrogame script.
Ryan Bates Is it possible that the machine could boot up with with a GPIO set to output and a button press will short +3.3V to ground?
would we be able to add a skin to the machine?
for example the sega arcade skin?
yes
I've been trying to make this in May 2015 and I final finish in January 2016
Started day after Christmas. Aiming to finish it today.
+Hamish MacDonald Aiming to finish it today again.
Hi I want to build one of these and I have two questions:
1. Does it work good with N64, PS1 and Gamecube?
2. Which joystick is better for 3D games like N64?
+Idosho Gaming PS1 works well with Pi2 and above. N64 is still behind in a good performing emulator. Gamecube is a no. Best to get a analog Arcade joystick if you want full N64 support.
+Ryan Bates Which Pi are you using in the video?
Which joystick will be better for N64 from the two available with the kit?
+Idosho Gaming Do I need to get anything besides the full kit, Pi and micro USB cable?
Is it the same with the 10 inch HD screen?
Maybe an SD card and pi if you don't have one. The 9 and 10" kits are identical except in the screen size.
+Ryan Bates So which joystick is better for N64 from the two available?
Some back noise? May be?
how can i use gpio set controler?
Is the Burnt wood extra lol
I have a pac man plug and play. Can I remove the joystick and use that?
Deacon Lindsey yes. it will require some soldering and rewiring.
Thanks
Can i use a usb controller as a second player controller in this or a usb n64 controller as first player controller in n64 games????
Yes you can
Thanks for quick reply
Do you still sell your kit ?
***** Yes I do
Nice work
I am so going to buy one for my new game room!!!!!!!!!
where can i get the link to purchase this kit
