I've never heard anything like this it's so dope, makes sense this genre is called triphop, but considering it's my first time hearing of the genre, it almost doesn't seem fitting since this song is on a completely other rhelm compared to any hip hop music I've ever heard. I love the story of how Tricky discovered Martina, the singer on this track and appearing in the video: “In 1993, as a teenager at Clifton College, Martina Topley-Bird was discovered by trip hop pioneer Tricky when he saw her sitting on a wall near his house, singing to herself. “That's really how it happened," she recalled. "It's one of those things people are always surprised to find out is true. I remember the graveyard behind the wall. A few weeks later, I went around to his house with some friends. We'd been drinking cider after our GCSEs. We were banging on his door, but he wasn't in. Then Mark Stewart, who lived there, came up to us and said: "Yeah, this is Tricky's house, jump in through the window." So I jumped through, opened the door and we got mashed.” They collaborated on many tracks and they had a daughter together born just after Maxinquaye was released.
Yes! It's completely otherworldly and everything I could ever want Trip Hop to be. The whole album Maxinquaye is worth having. I love Trip Hop and if I were to make a Holy Trinity of three albums, I would go with Maxinquaye, Dummy by Portishead, and Mezzanine by Massive Attack. I'll never delete a single track from any of them.
