I really like Matecat, it's a great CAT tool and I was doing fine with it until a translation I'm doing now: Italian to English. When it comes to GUESS TAGS it puts tags all over the place in weird places where there are none in the original text. it has something to do with the letters à è ì ò and ù in the original, but this was never a problem before.
In theory "guess tags" is a good idea and a step in the right direction. More often than not, however, in my experience, the wrong words are tagged, especially when the word order is changed in the target language and sentences are abbreviated. I appreciate tag placement is a difficult thing to predict and make easy. I think, therefore, that a simple optional manual tool should also be made available, like the use of F9 (insert next tag) in MemoQ, which though sometimes fiddly allows for complete control and is in fact very user-friendly. In this way I see no reason why MateCat shouldn't be classed as the best online translator's tool available!
Hello Will. Thanks for your feedback. We call the feature "guess tags" because we understand that it doesn't always work perfectly. That's also why we still leave the translators the option to fix the tags manually. It would help us to know which language pairs you are translating and it would help even more if you could send to support@matecat.com some examples where it fails. We'll continue working to improve the feature. Alessandro.
I agree. Unfortunately, it's not saved me any time translating. What's more, I don't seem to be able to disable the guess tags feature. It's even more of a nightmare working with tags in MateCat than in, say, Trados since moving them around is quite buggy (e.g. attempting to delete a tag will duplicate it sometimes).
I love MateCat! Trados is so bureaucratic! Keep up the good work and practicality!

Hi. Just wanted to let you know that not only tags are a pain in the ***, but the whole Matecat itself.
