What a cool dude. Totally my heyday for watching Dave. I was still in middle/high school for those years, then fell off a bit when I was in college, but came back to it and yeah; those were some golden years.
I used to hear Dave say that Vassar thing, never knowing what it was about, but laughing because it was hilarious the way he said it. Now thanks to the miracle of RUclips, I now understand. Great stories, I love how a common thread is emerging about how Alan Kalter made everything funnier. I never didn't laugh at him.
After all these years I finally feel less stupid for having poured water into a coffee maker, and then the carafe in the kitchen sink. The guy visiting at the time looked at the mess, and me, afterwards like I was complete numbskull. Many thanks for the story, Tom.
It's unbelievable that CNN couldn't have easily checked if a video of a presidential speech was real. They'd have access to the pool footage of every moment the president is behind a microphone. What was going on there?
I really want to see a compilation of Dave's "old turkey buzzard" fixation. Does anyone remember that?? It was mid-2000s, like 2006, 2007, somewhere in there. It was a song that would spontaneously interrupt the show and Dave would act disgusted by it. Lol. Hey, Letterman staff: Can you make this happen?
Who was responsible for the two dancing girls on a raised platform behind the drummer? That long-running bit was maybe the cringyest moment in the show's history. But I can find no record of it. Starting to think I imagined it. Not talking about the Will it Float girl with the power tool.
It’s nice that he mentions several moments that are not his own.
Tommy is fantastic. He was on our show a few months ago. Gave us an analogy comparing Dave to George Lucas, which was absolutely perfect.
All of these staff favorites have been terrific, but this one especially had me howling. Biff with the cymbals omg! Hahahaha
Steve O'Donnell, Chris Elliott, Gerard Mulligan....all legends!
That thumbnail of Mr Kalter almost made me not watch ...
@@plaws0 Alan Kalter - also a legend! R.I.P. Alan 😥
And we’ve had two of them on our show. The third is a bit of an elusive fish.
It doesn’t help when he’s passed on. But keep at it.
@@dongiller By my count, I think he meant Gerry M ...
Great Moments in Presidential Speeches was my favorite recurring segment of the show
Underrated is just one the words kids say these days. It’s all over RUclips. Always funny on videos of artists with international fame.

These are so much fun. Many great bits. Love this connection to The Bear Story!
"What is this, Vassar?" makes perfect sense to me.
Great because the show always maintained a home-baked feel that tight-roped professionalism.
"He slid open the drawers and got out some candles. You know, for ambience." 😄
I loved Great Moments in Presidential Speeches, but had never seen the clip with the sleepy boy.
That’s because it actually wasn’t part of GMIPS. It had aired two years before the near-daily segment had begun.
Loved GMIPS too! Laughed big time every time. Got to where I would start cracking up during FDR in anticipation. Great job Tom Ruprecht!
You writers are brilliant
Also, our Lawyer is a Latino too.
Set the stage for Trump's, "I love the Hispanics!"
Haha....poor Gerard.
We had him on our show, and he had a great Tommy story.
The beginning of that book is sllooowwwww...
That sleepy boy clip was one of the all time greatest moments on the show!
How many people made stars out of stagehands, just Dave the best.
Note to self: Keep my glasses.
You must have been fun to work with. Thanks for the laughs.
I hope we see you more often

I so love Great Moments in Presenditanl Speeches, boy what a field day you would have had if you hung on a little longer!
Shooting fish in a barrel for 4 years

I did to the coffee maker at work 2 times! By the second time I was so embarrassed I was telling my boss I would understand if they fired me.
love dave miss him
12:41 Dave's pencil has an eraser on both ends.
Man, thanks....
Why is Rob Schneider (over Tom's right shoulder) hiding in the audience wearing a fake mustache at 15:00?
It's unbelievable that CNN couldn't have easily checked if a video of a presidential speech was real. They'd have access to the pool footage of every moment the president is behind a microphone. What was going on there?
What is this, Vassar?
I couldn't help myself
I would have thought so. The whole thing seems so quaint now, given the current media's subservience to political elites.
I meet Alan in person - nice guy.
1:09 emilio estevez?
I hope that poor trooper kid got to take a nap eventually ☺
He was elected to congress last year.
@@plaws0 I should have known ...
We have it on good authority his nap was 48 minutes long, and delightful.
Not only a nap but a toilet as well.
I didn't think that by the end of this compilation, we would see a wet t-shirt contest with a hot-bodied Letterman writer! Yum!!

Hey, Letterman staff: Can you make this happen?
YES. It’s a song by Jose Feliciano. Sometimes that song pops into my head and I think of Dave.
Morton Downey, Jr. went national.....believe it or not.
didn't expect to see an eyeball being sliced...
Awesome, Tom!
A joke that Dave likes: 💵
Tom is indeed a sexy librarian. He's too handsome not to be on camera.
You wrote some of my favorite stuff bro
Just LOL! Tom is funny. What a brat :P
I, for one, am also scared o' the goofa man.
Thanks for the warning about the eye surgery. 🤮
Dave also thought Gerry reading to Chris during the Summer Sleep-Off '89 was the ugliest thing he'd ever seen

Is it wrong to want her to.......
Who was the writer that made Sarah Palin jokes 3 years after the 2008 election.
