It's not the disagreement that is the problem for me, I'm completely fine with people disagreeing with me. It's the fact that I can't voice my opinions irl without fear of my entire life being cancelled into oblivion.

My elderly mother wouldn't know how to get online if her life depended on it, yet she has become just as brainwashed and ideological via legacy media. People are determined to look to an authority figure to lead them in what they hope is a positive direction. If you can make people afraid AND seem like you know how to navigate the darkness, the masses will obey and eagerly defend you. When some EMP attack brings down the internet, people will not snap out of their trance and be reasonable again, they'll just follow whoever says "I know how this happened and what to do."

This is exactly true. Legacy media has adopted all the worst behaviours of internet culture to try to compete with what's online. Society has been so thoroughly poisoned by it all, it wouldn't change if you took the internet away. Exactly true about people looking for someone who claims to have all the answers and throws fear around also. This is true of the left and the right, just in different ways.

Then there is the coming true of certain quotes like 'children will spy on their parents', and ‘It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy.’ Note that in terms of Orthodoxy we have simply switched from heavily and totally enforcing Christian and religious orthodoxy with totalitarian left orthodoxy, and how is it achieved? Many of your generation lament the current Zeitgeist but did nothing to counter it. Not saying that's your case in specific since I have nothing to base myself off, but the point is that: how often, if ever, have people from the same generation as yours ever asked themselves "what am I doing to make sure that my descendants will have a better life than myself?" - we know the answer for a fact, not because they are evil but because they honestly didn't really care or ever thought of that.
It is for that very reason that a later "lamenting" when looking at their grandchildren comes off as arrogant to say the least. Until the very end of their lives they are still striving for that pretend game of virtue signalling and "divine-like" self image. It's ego incarnate in a generation, again, not born of malice but of indifference. If anyone reading this is still sceptical or ignorant of what I am talking about, merely look at the Zeitgest of the 70s and 80s; look at what the youngsters were doing and what their parents were (not) doing.

I had a little incident with my aunt the other day. She commented on people staring at their phone all the time.... while starting at a TV. I didn't comment of course but it did make me think. Most conversations tend to be opinion based and when it's in person there is this pressure to confirm, conformity by proximity. And a lot of the "conversation" that takes place is more about massaging the other person to your point of view. With the Internet now, you have access to people you don't need to win over to your side but also you have counter evidence to a lot of the opinions people hold at your fingertips, literally.
This effect, conformity by proximity, is something exploited by a lot of people in workplaces, political rallies and so on. Often by those with "riz", blessed with halo effect or similar advantages. The Internet bypasses this, throw in filters and all and you got something disrupting the normal order.

The big problem is that instead of making us better critical thinkers and bringing us together, the internet has made us more desensitized and polarized.
Having so much information at our fingertips has made us
    1) outsource our thinking to a machine, and if we don’t use it we lose it.
    2) have so much contradictory information, so there is more disinformation making us less informed instead of information making us more knowledgeable
    3) dig into one side of the information given and hold directly opposing views to those who received the opposite information.
Also, this all affect communication with the other side. This is why modern debates are functionally useless. Nobody goes in and admits their view or information was wrong. They each point to their own sources, studies, and examples that directly contradict one another, but that each side still claims is entirely correct when that cannot be the case by definition. This leads to more polarization and you get a positive feedback loop.

debates are only useful when you have an audience to persuade that have no skin in the game. You are not persuading your enemy on the other side. Thats right... your ENEMY.

Objective reality the person acknowledges on their own should settle a debate, but:
      4) delusion rather than admit error.
For example a day before the fateful debate I asked a few people for direct confirmation, "So, you really see no sign of senility or any cognitive decline." But these people are now speaking like that man does not exist. They're dancing around something they realized by their own observation. And I'm not gonna press their egos.

That's a harsher division than urban vs. rural, true. Another dichotomy attached to these is of subculture vs. neighbourhood. I mean interacting only with people in your trade, social class, gender, club, etc. Not... ah dammit:
_Sesame Street: People in Your Neighborhood with Bob_ almost made my cry for a better time when "a grocer is a person in your neighbourhood ... a person who you meet each day" and "a doctor is a person in your neighbourhood, in your neighbourhood".

I guess my point was that humanity being split in two was probably the norm/default state. Industrialised/non-industrialised was the biggest example that occurred to me. To my mind that is far more stark than the online/offline dichotomy....however the difference is that in the industrialised/non industrialised example it was a case of never the twain shall meet. It referred to people in different countries. The online/offline dichotomy could be people living next door to one another.

How many times throughout our history have entire generations been born with fetal alcohol syndrome? What would it be like to be the one kid in your whole village or city to not have this disability?

I mean that is essentially what I have observed to have happened on FaceBook and other social media platforms to a lesser degree (like Reddit). The only people left on FaceBook at present are essentially the narcissists who post several times a day - everyone else who was normal and would, at most, post once every couple of days or once a week or whenever (you know when something maybe actually *interesting* may have happened) well they have all but stopped visiting FaceBook or at least posting on there. Drowned out by all the obnoxious people who post non-stop about bullshit. Other sites like Reddit have encouraged fragmentation of communities into (almost literal) echo chambers. And the arbitrary politically correct and government/corporate approved messaging and controls have caused so much censorship that we even have to use stupid terms like "unalive" in RUclips videos and even in chat rooms or comments. So yeah - there are way too many people just talking over each other and not as many people actually listening.

    • @DPPB5

You're right. It's trivialization of communication which then leads to it becoming less meaningful. In times of yore you had to sent letters and wait weeks or even months to get a reply - if your letter was ever delivered. Nowadays you have access to anyone in your circle at any given time at the palm of your hands. This also ties in with the "Attention Economics" if you've ever heard about that.

I don't think it's that case at all. I was born in mid 80s and never got online until 2015.
My whole life I was apolitical because my whole family would lie about every little thing (aka "gaslighting") even the most trivial every day things. They'd steal or destroy things of yours and then accuse you of stealing or destroying their things. Just non stop lies; and when it wasn't overt daily such activities, it was perpetual preaching of the gospel of the democratic party. So I was acutely disgusted by politics all together from an early age; it was just overt charlatan and hypocrisy in your face all day every day, so I simply learned to ignore it (you can't fight back as they call you delusional and try to force mental health programs upon you).
It's nothing new to me; it has ALWAYS been this way. Then you read the gospels and it essentially says just this; enemies in own family/home. Nothing we can do but be generous and forgive/turn blind eye to the "monkey business". And just nod your head and smile when they preach their "politic".
But yes since internet I found all humanity seems to only have surface views of most every thing. There is no discernable depth across the board; just automation and people set in their ways.

Small correction. It appears that “officially” the Zoomers demographic end at birth year of 2012, not 2010 or other, meaning the Alpha demographic begins at birth year 2013. So, you have the Boomers (1945-1964), GenX (1965-1979), Millennials (GenY) 1980-1996), Zoomers (Gen Z) 1997-2012, and Alpha (2013-whenever). The beginning or ending year for the each generation may have some dispute/debate. However, the above is generally accepted. One might argue wrongly or at least without completion, the difference between first-half GenX (1965-1972) and second-half GenX (1973-1979) are often quite vast, first-half growing up in the 1970s versus second-half growing up in the 1980s. Second-half GenX at least had the infancy of the internet or home computers in their formative years, at least by college, we’re as the first-half GenX did not.

I agree overall but oppose using the word 'facts'. There are things that are true and things that are not. Things that are not true, are not facts, even if the person thinks they're true. Wrong is wrong. Facts are facts. Nuance exists but doesn't change that initial statement, it actually helps to solidify if something is true or false. Many are stuck in a fairy tale narrative. Often a viewpoint they prefer to believe. But make-belief can't last forever without consequence. It doesn't change what is or why something is. Over time a false narrative will develop cracks which result in more and more hostility towards those pointing at those cracks.
Some only want to find out the actual truth, good or bad. Reality exists, there isn't a possibility of two realities, but there are multiple perspectives. Ever notice when watching two people arguing, often they both have valid points, but both are also wrong in other aspects? Yeah, this is why people need to stop sticking to belief and actually think about what is reality. The ability to see where you've messed up is essential. Rethinking based upon new information, is essential. Believing something simply because it's what you want to believe, helps no one, including yourself. Never outsource your thinking to the point where it becomes habit and locks you into someone else's narrative. Question things you like as much as things you don't.

The internet was intended to make the world a smaller place where people from around the world could communicate, find common ground and coexist peacefully. The reality is much more stark. The people of the world find out more about each other’s culture, politics, religions and cultures and find that they hate and despise each other even more than they did pre-internet.
