  • Our Cordyline palm trees need cutting back (actually strictly speaking they are not true palm trees but are much loved in the UK, and used as palm trees for their exotic tropical appearance and also known as #Torbay Palms #cabbage Palms)
So in this video we see Roger about 10 feet up on some ladders! cutting back some of the thick branches of this multi-stemmed Cordyline which must be about 20 years old and has got so tall that it is blocking some of view of the welsh mountains.
Rather than cutting all the branches back we cut some of them this year and will probably cut some more next year, by which time we should see some new growth and strong new shoots starting to fill some of the space we created by trimming branches this year ... if that makes sense?! .. if it doesn't make sense try watching the video and everything should become clearer! (if you have any questions and comments please please leave a comment in the RUclips comments section underneath the video - thanks)
Here is a link to the fertilizer I like to use in spring which has a high potash content will encourage strong (not too soft) bushy new growth

Will be doing mine next week (was the Chamerops turn today) thanks for tips.
The cuttings should grow, I gave some to a neighbour here in West Sussex 2 years ago and all 3 have rooted and are growing well.

Hi great video , would I still be able to cut back this time of year June 26th 2024 would it damage doing it in summer thank you in advance 😊

      Yes, but ..
The main issue (for me anyway) is that the plants natural response to a prune like that is to put on lots of fresh new growth (ours in the video has just started producing new shoots just beneath where I cut it) by cutting in early spring the new growth has plenty of time to mature / toughen up before winter and any potential frosts… if you cut it back now the new growth may not start until September and into autumn which could mean you have vulnerable soft new growth in winter … which might be a problem in a cold winter … in a mild winter it should be fine though … so it’s not the summer cut back that could cause a problem it’s the new growth in winter could be frosted … does that make sense?

@@rogthegardener1 thank you so much for all the information and that’s very clear, we are in north Devon and winters can be milder but occasionally very cold too, all the best cheers 👍

Very interesting video thanks. Has the cordyline started to regrow after you cut it back? I’ve got three cordyline’s which are 20 feet approx and could probably do with reducing in size. Probably a job for spring next year. Many thanks Richard

What type of saw are you using? I have 2 x 10ft cordylines and thinking of pruning next spring. Never had flowers

@@mwc6397 hi, thanks for your comments, I have just replied to your other comment with some questions, so of which I can now see the answers to 👍😀
It’s called a pruning saw, a few different makes available. The one in the video was made by Fiskars, I find it particularly good and it can be connected to a telescopic handle which is very useful for higher branches.
The branches I cut back in the video are already producing 5 or 6 new shoots, so the plan seems to be working!

Will the cut off pieces of the cordyline root if planted?

Hi, thanks for your comment, in my limited experience … no not yet, I did try with some of the shoots I cut off in this video, most have died, but a few are still ok but no roots … If I do succeed I’ll do an update video 😀👍
