When Elephants Get Spiritual, a Scrimshaw Tale about Ivory

- There is something spiritual about ivory. Even the elephants. I heard a story one time about a herd of elephants that were in a zoo. They were having a problem with them health-wise. They were all becoming really lethargic, not eating, and looking very depressed, a sad bunch of pachyderms. They tried everything - vets came, but they couldn't figure out what the problem could possibly be. I don't know if you believe in this, but it sounded like a good story to me. They contacted an animal psychic, and she went into the herd, sat with them for a bit.
When she came out, she said to the handler, the zookeeper, "There was a death in the herd." He said, "Yeah, one of the elephants died not too long ago." She says, "Well, what did you do with the carcass?" He said, "We disposed of it. She says, "You don't have anything left of it?" He says, "Well, I got the skull. In my office." And it's got tusks and everything in it. And so, she said, "Well, you need to bring that out. They haven't had a chance to mourn, you know, the passing."
So he did. They brought the skull out, put it in the compound, and the elephants started trumpeting and prancing around. Then, they started kicking and knocking the skull about with their trunks and so forth and their tusks until the tusks fell out of the skull.
And then, there was peace. The elephants all went back to normal, ate, and got healthy.
So, there was something spiritual to them about that whole process. We don't give critters enough credit for what they might be thinking.

Elephants are deeply empathetic animals like other mamals with tightly knitted communities. They experience pretty much every emotion we do through life, and we as a species need to understand that we are not as unique as we sometimes like to think. Elephants lay their dead to rest and will even trek hundreds of miles to graveyards if they sense their time is short.
I find that most people like to pretend that we are not animals ourselves. But, we're only the one remaining species of bipedal ape alive today, and I feel that's an important thing to understand to put things into context. It doesn't matter that we have big brains and can develop tools to bring us into this technological world we've constructed for ourselves. At the end of the day, we need all the same things most other mamals require beyond the very basics of survival.
We need community, love, empathy, kindness, and the desire to support one another. Apes do it, whales do it, dolphins do it, elephants do it. Even mice and squirrels do it. We should strive to do it as well, with less reservations as we are all one global family. The story of these elephants is both touching and inspiring. Now, I need to find out who's chopping onions in my kitchen. 😢😊💜
Well put Brian! I appreciate that you put it down like that, all our hearts beat as one.
It's amazing how they behave. I have heard such things before on documentaries.
You’re right Gil, amazing creatures. I’m sure they could teach us a lot.
Very interesting Brian, enjoyed and hope your not working too hard over there :)
Hey Janson, thanks! Never a dull moment around here.
That story very well reflects my experience…
I brought my dogs to meet with an animal communicator, (incidentally she was also an equine chiropractor from the Tucson az area),
The experience understandably, wouldn’t be believed without seeing it first hand.
It’s so cool that there are people who can still do that. Thank you for watching our channel.
Interesting experience. Some oints we could learn from that.
Hey Willys, l think you are right about that.
Leprechaun house !!! never was a follow up after part 2 ???
Hello David, l’m coming to a point where I can get back to that. Don’t loose faith.
Stockman love me or hate me for this but, does a Republican count as being spiritual?
Okay kidding, just had to funny and try to get a smile.
😂 I guess it depends on which side of the elephant he climbs up on!🤔😉
