Today we’re diving into the much requested Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown starring Kimberly J. Brown and Debbie Reynolds. This was the movie that got kids all over the world excited about Halloween, and excited about possibly having magic powers that would come through on our thirteenth birthday. Upon rewatching this cult class movie, I realized that Halloweentown has a low budget that shows and some convenient story elements that I never noticed as a child. I don’t understand why they couldn’t explain what they were doing to all the creatures. Clearly the Cromwell name carries hella weight in this town, a Cromwell child saying they need your sweat or a little bit of any werewolf hair from your barbershop? That should be a “Oh yeah sure no prob Bob take what you need if it’ll help Aggie! Tell her we said hi!”

I have a long lost sister in another country somewhere. I have nothing to do with this information.
My grandma was a heroin addict back in the 60s and 70s and she had 2 children that got taken away by cps, and then after my grandma had 3 more children, my mom aunt and uncle and they got taken away and placed in foster care/with family when my mom (grandmas youngest child) was born addicted. it was her final wake up call. She turned her life around, went to rehab, joined a halfway house and spent 4 years working hard to get her children back. She got my mom aunt and uncle back, but since so much time had passed since the first two children were taken away, they were adopted and she had no rights to them and we will never know them or see them again because we don’t even know their first names. Grandma didn’t like to talk about them when she was alive and ofc now she’s gone so we will never have this info.

I think the part with Sophie opening the gate actually works quite nicely. Marnie was too occupied with the words and what sounded like a spell to her. Sophie just wanted the gate open so she opened it. Grandma Aggie later told Marnie that magic is really simple. You just have to want something and let yourself have it.
As an overthinker and perfectionist I always loved that kind of magic in fiction. Also probably due to my executive dysfunction. No giant productions or difficult rituals to remember, you just think the thing with intent and boom, you’re a wizzo

@@DeathnoteBBMe too, I love the fiction idea (like in ella enchanted) where the strongest magic comes from inside of you because it reminds me we're often our biggest enemy. We often just needs to believe we can do something or we deserve something, and let ourselves have it. 💖
Here in Oregon, particularly in St. Helens where this was filmed, Halloweentown is h u g e. They do the town up to look like Halloweentown every October and host loads of festivities (well except for this year, thanks [insert calamity that must not be named].)

The thing you said about wishing you were an orphan is an actual thing! One of my papers in university was on child fiction, it's huge trope for children. When we all reach a certain age we realize that our parents aren't perfect and we don't look up to them the same so this devise is used as an immersive technique for young readers achieving escapism (harry potter, lion the witch and the wardrobe, Alice adventure in wonderland etc). Totally normal and actually really interesting going into the psychology of it!

Oh my god same, I had a phase where I constantly threatened to run anyway, I had a shirt I'd wear everytime too, I even put a for sale sign in my window (kid brain did not realise how dark that was), I only stopped when one time my mum broke down crying and I realised oh right other people feel hurt too. Kids are horrible wow..

Now that I’m older I’m actually more mad at Marnie’s mom than when I was a kid. I totally agree the grandma is out of bounds. But to deny a child DESPERATE to figure out why’s she so different from her peers, who loves and appreciates the culture her grandmother tries to impart on her, and who is about to lose access to her birthright FOREVER based on what you think is best for her is so wrong!
Halloweentown and magic is a part of Marnie. And her mother thinks it’s okay to rob her kids of their roots? When the grandmother is right there, alive and well, unable to even talk about where she even LIVES for the 364 days she doesn’t see them? Rightfully drag the grandmother for the off-color mortal comments but if we extend the metaphor the mother is guilty of it, too. She bars her children from meaningfully engaging in their own culture because she thinks it’s “weird” and “distasteful.” Wouldn’t it better for them to live a “normal,” “good” life without that awful magic influence? She essentially wants them to assimilate! Anyway, mistakes were made and I didn’t have to type all this out for a kid’s movie LOL.
the only struggles with cultural assimilation in a biracial family was a white halloween movie because with Disney, monsters aren't as scary as interracial relationships and focusing on POC issues because only 2 black ppl allowed per movie in the early 2000s

@@CherryBlossomBlyue It seems like they’re inferring that this film’s conflict on kids of human-magic heritage is the closest Disney could comfortably get to real issues like interracial marriage/heritage during the time. Although didn’t did have shows featuring black families, and the movie Color of Friendship hit race issues even if it wasn’t in America. Idk maybe as a black child in America watching tv I was used to not seeing representation. I also learned my history at home so the cultural differences were clear.
I hated the mother with every fiber of my being when I watched this when I was younger, I still fucking hate her, a lot, the grandma though is a little pushy, like real pushy, but the mom still grinds my gears to this day

Characters like the brother were always so conflicting to me as a kid! I was usually great at school and loved learning, but the nerd characters were always such wet blankets! I related way more to Marnie and Sophie than the brother
Sophie was the strongest Cromwell witch and was severely underutilized throughout the movies.

Yep. I was disappointed how they phased out her character. If they absolutely had to phase out a character, it should have definetely been the mom or maybe the brother.
The brother should have decided he didn't want to be involved and go back to earth to be normal, and Sophie upstaged Marnie as the most powerful

My parents weren’t Jehovah’s Witness but my parents were in a pretty strange religion too. So I didn’t get to celebrate Halloween, Christmas, or Easter. We did do birthdays and anniversaries. We went to church on Saturday and couldn’t eat pork or unclean meats. I have nothing to do with it anymore. Parents and 2 of my siblings are still in it.

Fun fact! They do a full Halloweentown event in St. Helens, Oregon every year and it’s VERY disappointing. They put the pumpkin up (much smaller than you’d think it was) and put the taxi with Benny in it. Other than that, a couple buildings in the square put decorations up but that’s literally it other than some fair food.

I live about an hour away from where they filmed this movie and every Halloween they set up the town square just like the movie with the big pumpkin and everything, it's great. There was also a lot of scenes filmed for Twilight there too lol

This was my favorite movie growing up as a kid which made Halloween my favorite time of the year because it would come on Disney channel. I was sad when November came because they wouldn’t show it again for a whole year. 😩 first world problems man.

Also the number 13 is pretty significant in wicca which back in the 90s was very popular as a basis of witchcraft. Charmed and The Craft lifted a few things from wicca. Anyways you would have 13 members in a coven so maybe that’s it.

fun personal fact, my christian fundementalist parents actually put this on for my sisters and brothers based on the synopsis in tvguide saying something about a mom preventing her kids from celebrating halloween....ive never seen two people run to a tv so fast once they realized there were witches in a positive portrayal...they broke the sound barrier yall.
