Are Catholic beliefs and practices biblical?
The question that concerns every church and its practices should be, "Is this biblical?" If a teaching is biblical (taken in context), it should be accepted. If it is not, it should be rejected. God is more interested in whether a church does His will and obeys His Word than whether it can trace its lineage back to Jesus' apostles. Jesus was very concerned about the Word of God being rejected to follow traditions of men (Mark 7:7). Traditions are not inherently wrong...there are some good and valuable traditions. To reiterate, the concern should be whether a doctrine, practice or tradition is biblical. How then does the Catholic Church compare to the Word of God?
Salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is regenerated through baptism and maintained through the Catholic sacraments, except through a willful act of sin that destroys the sanctified state of grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace, which we receive through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a changed heart worked out in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; I Corinthians 5:17) and through the fruit of new life in Christ (John 15).
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is not guaranteed or certain. 1 John 5:13 says that the reason for writing 1 John was so that believers could be ASSURED of their salvation.
Good works: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism), and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments, confessing sins to a priest, etc.). The Bible teaches that Christians are saved by grace through faith, completely apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24).
Baptism: In the New Testament, baptism ALWAYS comes AFTER saving faith in Christ. Baptism is not the reason for salvation; it is faith in the gospel that saves (1 Corinthians 1:14-18; Romans 10:13-17). The Roman Catholic Church teaches the regeneration of infants through baptism, a practice never found in Scripture. The only possible reference to the baptism of infants that the Roman Catholic Church can point to is that the entire household of the jailer in Philippi was baptized, as recorded in Acts 16:33. However, the context never mentions infants. Acts 16:31 explains that salvation comes by faith. Paul addressed the whole household in verse 31, and the whole household believed (verse 34). This passage only supports the baptism of those who have already believed, not that of infants.
Prayer: The Roman Catholic Church teaches Catholics not only to pray to God, but also to petition Mary and the saints for their prayers. Contrary to this, Scripture teaches us to pray to God alone (Matthew 6:9; Luke 18:1-7).
Priesthood: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there is a difference between priests and "commoners," where the New Testament teaches that all believers hold the priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).
Sacraments: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that a believer is filled with grace by receiving the sacraments. This teaching is nowhere to be found in Scripture.
Confession: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that, unless the believer is incapacitated, the only way to be forgiven of sins is through confession to a priest. In contrast, Scripture teaches that confession of sins is made to God alone (1 John 1:9).
Mary: The Roman Catholic Church teaches, among other things, that Mary is the Queen of Heaven, everlasting Virgin and with redeemer who ascended to heaven. In the Holy Scriptures she is portrayed as an obedient, faithful servant of God who became the mother of Jesus. None of the other attributes mentioned by the Roman Catholic Church have their basis in the Bible. The view that Mary was the co-redemptrix and is another mediator between God and man is not only extra-biblical (found only outside of Scripture), but is also unbiblical (contrary to Scripture). Acts 4:12 declares that Jesus is the only Savior. 1 Timothy 2:5 proclaims that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.
Many other examples could be listed here. These points alone clearly identify the Catholic Church as unbiblical. Every Christian denomination has traditions and practices that are not explicitly based on the Bible. This is the reason why Scripture must be the standard for Christian belief and practice. The Word of God is always true and trustworthy. The same cannot be said about church traditions. Our guideline should be: "What does the Bible say?" (Romans 4:3; Galatians 4:30; Acts 17:10). 2 Timothy 3:16-17 proclaims, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly prepared for every good work.

I too have been asked dozens of times by non-Catholics where something is in the Bible, and when I give them the Chapter and Verse, they invariably always answer the same way, "That's not what it means." So my answer is this, "What do you think it means." Nine times out of ten, they cannot answer that question because after trying to put together a credible explanation, they suddenly realize their interpretation is full of holes. So instead, they change direction and say. "I don't know what it means, but it doesn't mean what you said it means." And that's where it usually ends.

Where in the Bible does it say that we need a second Bible to interpret the first Bible? If that's the case wouldn't we need a third Bible to interpret the second Bible and so on, ad infinitem?
Of course you're still thinking like an irrational Protestant who claims that books can interpret themselves when of course books are inanimate objects, and people must interpret them. It's obvious to anyone who uses basic critical thinking that because a book cannot interpret itself we do not use another book to interpret it; we look for person who has the authority of final interpretation. But I don't need to explain this to Protestants they know full well, which is precisely why they claim that they themselves are the highest authority to interpret the Bible about others.
Since you lack a single source that authoritatively interprets every scripture verse it's unclear why you demand one except as hypocritical double standard.

I love that quote from the catechism. The whole section says something like this.
85 "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ."47 This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.
86 "Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith."48

If Christ Jesus did not establish the Catholic Church, who did, and when and how? The apostle Paul foretold that after his death wolfish men would enter the Christian congregation and that these would “speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves.”-Acts 20:29, 30, NW.
In writing the Thessalonian Christians not to expect the return of Christ in their day Paul warned that it would not come before there was an apostasy, that this apostasy or mystery of lawlessness was already at work in his day and that it would blossom out after he and others who acted as a restraint to it were out of the way. (2 Thess. 2:5, 7, 9) If such conditions began to manifest themselves while the apostles were alive, what could be expected after the apostles passed from the scene? What could? In answer to that question note what the historian Lord in his Old Roman World has to say about the gradual development of this apostasy:
“In the First Century not many wise or noble were called. . . . In the Second Century . . . It was a disgrace to be a Christian in the eye of fashion or power.” However, it was during this century that “bishops became influential, not in society, but among Christians.” This calls to mind what the apostle John had to say about one Diotrophes, “who likes to have the first place among them,” and who did not receive with respect anything John and the others with him had to say.-3 John 9.
“The Third Century,” continues Lord in his Old Roman World, “saw the church more powerful as an institution,” although “it was not until the Fourth Century-when imperial persecution had stopped; when the emperor Constantine was converted [only ostensibly, since he was not “baptized” until he lay on his deathbed]; when the Church was allied with the State, . . . that men of rank entered the Church. When Christianity became the religion of the court and of the fashionable classes, it was used to support the very evils against which it originally protested. The Church was not only impregnated with the errors of Pagan philosophy, but it adopted many of the ceremonies of oriental worship.”
Thus we see that when apostate Christianity fused itself with pagan philosophy and religion, and in the interests of worldly fame, wealth and political power it joined hands with the state, that marked the beginning of the Catholic Church as she has been known for the past sixteen centuries. Although claiming to be espoused to Christ she has had worldly paramours from the time of Constantine down to Franco, whom she allows to have a voice in the appointing of her bishops in Spain.
While the birth of the Catholic Church may be pinpointed at A.D. 325, when Constantine decided the debate on the trinity held at Nicea in favor of Athanasius and against Arius, it was not until after the year A.D. 440 that the bishop of the Roman see, Leo I, became in fact the first pope. He was the first Roman bishop able to hold undisputed sway over the other three sees into which the Christian world at that time was divided, namely, the Constantinopolitan, the Antiochian and the Alexandrian.
Upon becoming bishop of Rome, Leo I presumptuously stated: “I will revive government once more upon this earth; not by bringing back the Caesars, but by declaring a new theocracy, by making myself the vicegerent of Christ, by virtue of the promise made to Peter, whose successor I am, in order to restore law, punish crime, head off heresy, encourage genius, conserve peace, heal dissensions, protect learning; appealing to love, but ruling by fear. Who but the Church can do this? A theocracy will create a new civilization. Not a diadem, but a tiara will I wear, a symbol of universal sovereignty, before which barbarism shall flee away.”-Beacon Lights of History, Vol. III, pages 244, 245.
That some even in Paul’s day had an ambition similar to that of Leo I is apparent from Paul’s words to the Corinthians: “You men already have your fill, do you? You are rich already, are you? You have begun ruling as kings without us, have you? And I wish indeed that you had begun ruling as kings, that we also might rule with you as kings.” (1 Cor. 4:8, NW) The ambition of Leo I was fully realized by Leo III, when, on December 25, A.D. 800, he crowned Charlemagne emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic nations. Here, then, we have the gradual development of the Roman Catholic Church.
Regarding the early Christian congregation Paul expressed this concern: “I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy, for I personally promised you in marriage to one husband that I might present you as a chaste virgin to the Christ. But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent seduced Eve by its craftiness, your minds might be corrupted away from the sincerity and the chastity that are due the Christ. For, as it is, if someone comes and preaches a Jesus other than the one we preached, or you receive a spirit other than what you received, or good news other than what you accepted, you easily put up with him.”-2 Cor. 11:2-4, NW.
Here we have it. Just as the “covering cherub” allowed his ambition to change him from an obedient spirit creature to Satan the Devil; just as the choice and pure vine of Israel allowed herself to deteriorate into a degenerate and wild vine; so, too, many of the Christian congregation, which began as a pure and chaste virgin, allowed themselves to be overreached by Satan the Devil and his world, to become unfaithful to their Lord Jesus Christ and to bring forth all manner of bad fruit, at which time they became known as the Catholic Church. So, instead of Christ, it really is Satan the Devil that is the one who established the Catholic Church.-Jer. 2:21; Ezek. 28:14-16.

The Catholic Church actually wrote all the New Testament scriptures as it was the only church the Orthodox schism in 1054 and the heretical denominations from the Protestant Reformation in 1517. I'm so glad that you're tackling their strategies directly. Yet, it seems like it wpuld take for us to become saintly because there are instances that the truth will simply not be accepted, so the only way to convince someone is to show them something very beautiful. That beautiful something can be raking them to a Mass, which can be difficult because the Mass in your area may not be of their liking or they may just say "NO." The other option will depend on our own effort, which would be to become as saintly, eloquent, and calm as we can through much specific prayers to grow in the necessary virtues to let the Holy Spirit speak through us.
Let's remember that when we're not in grace, our prayers aren't heard unless we ask to be humbled or something else that God may find helpful for sanctification. 😇😇😇😇😇 we're all called to be Saints 😃

Attending Mass, we always read paragraphs to paragraphs from the Old Testament and New Testament and we even stand up when it’s Jesus speaking while reading the Bible during the Gospel reading. And the priest even kisses the Bible, the Word of the Lord after reading the Bible. We raise the Bible when entering the Church and the Altar and before the reading for respect and showing respect for the Word. During the Readings or Liturgy of the Word we don’t only quote a phrase but we read long verses and we read from Old Testament and New Testament on Sundays to show how the Old Testament relates to the New Testament. Every day we have the Mass which means we listen to the Word of God every day. Then we have the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and can be done every day.

Spot on Keith, that is so true. I attend a Bible study with both Protestants and Catholics and when we disagree on a particular teaching or belief, we end up throwing verses at one another and then say to the other,” this is how this needs to be interpreted “. I call it the “scriptural merry go round”.
I use to believe that the scriptures alone were the absolute authority. I was wrong, and I knew it. Sure, scripture is authoritative. It is the Word of God. That is why the bishops enthrone it during any ecumenical council. They know that the Bible must play a central role as they discuss a critical doctrinal issue. They also rely on the Tradition of the Church when deciding these issues. What has the Church always believed and taught in regards to this matter?
This is why the Church itself is so critical. We read the scriptures through the lens of the Church and its big T, not little t, traditions. And once we do that, then the scriptures come even more alive.

    • @stevedoetsch
      @stevedoetsch 7 месяцев назад +1

Well said. The Bible is interpreted via Tradition. That is true for both Protestants and Catholics, though the Protestants don't realize it. The only difference is Catholic tradition is backed by the authority established in the Church of Christ while Protestant traditions of Biblical interpretation are entirely man-made.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 📖 *Catholics often face the question "Where is that in the Bible?" regarding their beliefs and practices.*
01:48 🤔 *Arguing with anti-Catholics using Bible verses often leads to futile debates due to differing interpretations and lack of authority acceptance.*
03:37 🛡️ *Catholics reject the notion of sola scriptura and emphasize the importance of sacred tradition alongside scripture.*
07:18 📜 *Catholic belief asserts that both sacred scripture and tradition are essential for understanding truth and are closely interconnected.*
09:20 💬 *Quoting 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ("all scripture is inspired...") doesn't prove that everything Catholics believe must be explicitly in the Bible, as the Bible itself doesn't specify its own contents.*
10:56 🙏 *Catholics affirm the importance of tradition alongside scripture, as taught by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2:15.*
13:11 ⚔️ *Interpretations of verses like 1 Corinthians 4:6 and Revelation 22:18-19 used to argue against extra-biblical authority require contextual understanding.*
14:35 🚫 *Rejecting the premise of sola scriptura is key when responding to challenges about Catholic beliefs not explicitly in the Bible.*

    This!
Definitely the points I've tried to raise, I've had a few question me on "where's that in the bible" after giving the scripture they say "that's not what it means" so I say "what gives you the authority to interpret it that way" they'll claim "the Holy spirit" so I have to point out the error that the conclusion they've arrived at directly contradicts the chapter and I then point them to Peter's epistle where he says that the unlearned twist scripture to thier own destruction.
Most often I don't get a reply back after that, the times I do they always question well what authority do you have " I say "I don't but through Apostolic succession the Pope's, bishops etc through the magisterium of the church have authority to interpret scripture" they then say "where's that in the bible?" So I point them to Isiah 22 where the former leadership will be thrown out and a new leadership will be appointed with authority to teach doctrines, which in turn relates to Jesus handing the keys to Peter and whilst Jesus said to the apostles that when the Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses do what they tell you to do but don't do what they do for they are hypocrites, after the death and resurrection of Christ was the apostolic succession given at Pentecost when the holy spirit descended upon them as in acts we see Peter rebuking the Pharisees saying and I paraphrase "Christ is the cornerstone you rejected and it is by this we have authority" Jews knew exactly what was happening and they knew the significance of the cornerstone being the authority to teach doctrines (Dr Brant Pitre has done a phenomenal talk on the Jewish roots of the papacy 😅)
Of course after all this protestants go "that's not what that means" 🤦 it's like if Jews understood it the way Catholics interpret it and it was actually how God set up the role of the High priest's to instruct people in the faith guess what you're theology just may be incorrect and Catholics have had it right all along.

I just had this same conversation with my wife yesterday. I’m in a facebook group called Men Who Follow Christ, which I found out is basically a Catholic bashing group. Every conversation on there just turns into how Catholic beliefs are wrong, not biblical, etc. many just telling complete lies about what we believe. She thinks I should just leave the group but I like to add a little truth to the conversation s here and there. I know I’m not going to convince anyone but hopefully I’m planting some seeds that will eventually lead to the truth.

Because we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities then if you really want to help anyone in that fb group make sure when you offer up meat on Fridays or other sufferings in your life that you do it for the individuals in that group. This is the most effective way we as Catholics have to remove the obstacles people have to hearing Jesus' message.

I would love to try this, if ever I get into an argument with a non Catholic, about any subject: I d love us both to keep a holy hour and meditate in silence on the disagreement bringing it before God. Then, afteran hour I would like us both to echo what came up for us as we try to listen to God's answer on this. I am yet to experience such a praying together- instead my non Catholic friends avoid any confrontation, in an effort to respect me. But oh, I d love for the Holy Spirit to intervene by sirting us together in prayer.

I have said for a long time that debating the Bible to non Catholics is most of the time pointless. It requires divine intervention for them to change. What non Catholics should be confronted with, is the BIBLICAL sized miracles, after the time of CHRIST that happen only in the Catholic Church. Protestants, Jews, Baptist, Muslims…have got absolutely nothing to point too after the time of CHRIST!!

...The Holy Spirit who lives in every genuine BORN AGAIN BELIEVER IN CHRIST as promised by God Himself to be TRUE!

Hi Keith, I'm a retired Free Methodist minister, and as you might expect, I have a few comments - though they will likely not be what you expect...
First, as a Wesleyan, I hold that Scripture has the highest authority - but I also hold that both Tradition and reason, subject to Scripture, are also authoritative. You might say that in this regard we are close to our Orthodox brothers and sisters. I often taught that if someone comes up with an interpretation of Scripture that no one has even come up with before, reject it. This is why I reject the "pre-tribulation rapture". It is not only bad Biblical interpretation, it is unreasonable to think that someone would not have seen it in the Word long ago.
Second, there IS a core of doctrine, taught in God's Word, which we all agree upon. The inspiration of Scripture, the Deity of Christ, His Sacrificial death upon the Cross, His Resurrection and His sure return. That's a core we ALL hold, Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox. Therefore, I trust that you are my brother in Christ, that you are trusting in Him for your salvation.
Third, I am not a fan of "gotcha questions" by anyone. The case you make, the case I make - anyone's case, stands or falls as a whole....
Fourth, you indeed have identified the very real central question: Is the ultimate authority the Church or the Scriptures? It really cannot be both equally - because if it is the Scriptures, then the Church can be criticized from them. If it is the church, than any interpretation - no matter how unreasonable - can be affirmed. I thank God that in practice, the Catholic Church does not stray too far away from the Scriptures.... but I have to wonder what Catholics would do if a Pope affirmed gay marriage in violation of both the Scriptures and Church tradition. (I pray this never happens!)
In this video you used one argument that simply doesn't hold up: That because the Church affirmed the books of the NT, it therefore must have authority equal to it. This simply is not the case.
First, a strong consensus existed at least 100 years before this happened in 382AD. In fact, almost immediately after the close of the NT era, the Church fathers began quoting books that the church knew to be authoritative. When I teach on the reliability of Scripture, I trace these quotes from the 1st century to the 4th and early 5th century. These quotations provide a witness to the Canon - or put another way, the church officials did not sit down and develop an official canon from scratch. In fact Eusebius lists the same 27 books as either universally accepted (22 books) or widely accepted (5 books) - these 27 books are the same books in our NT today - and he did this in 330AD. The fact that no action was taken by the church for 70 years after the end of persecution also indicates that there was little disagreement.
Now to the error in your reasoning: Just because I - or the church - witness something, that does not convey to the witness equal authority. If I witness your will, I am saying that it is authentic - but that does not give me authority to change it, that belongs only to you. If a police officer takes a dying declaration from a witness, that doesn't mean that they can do any more than convey what they said. In the same way, if the church - having strong and reliable oral and written traditions as to what books were written by Apostles (or under their authority) - provides witness to that fact, that simply does not require that the Church have equal authority. I think there are likely much better arguments for the authority of the church than this one.
Another point: In the Catholic Church there are theological liberal, conservatives, evangelicals (yes, people I would consider fellow evangelicals) - a wide variety of positions. Ditto for the evangelical world. However, pointing out that there are differences in either camp is unconvincing.
My primary interest nowadays is apologetics - not evangelical apologetics, but CHRISTIAN apologetics. Like CS Lewis said in Mere Christianity: I do not care if someone becomes Protestant, Catholic or Orthodox - I care that they come to faith in Christ!
May the Grace and Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be upon you!
