I live in British Columbia. A few years back, you would look up into the hills and they would be a burning red colour from all the dying trees. Now you look up and the hills are grey from all the dead trees. This episode was really close to home for me.
yup i used to work in prince george in the forestry industry, not any more, i now work in oil. but blaming it all on climate is not true, canfor is equally to blame here and their mono forests. other companies may have had mono forests as well, but im not familiar with their operations.
I admire Diana's amazing amount of obvious passion she has for her job. I *love* how much she is very clearly in love with insects. It's absolutely refreshing to see someone so unapologetically in love with their interests.
Diana six is sooo cool. I really like her way of looking at the world, for so far I can gather that from this short clip. I applaud her. And yes, of course Hank and Jessi are cool as well. But you know I love ya. ;)
One of the things I love about this show is that when it comes to living things that have a prejudice (they're gross, creepy, useless, etc.) when they come on or you discuss them, it's not just "they're gross, end of story," it's "I find them gross, what do they do, will it kill me, CAN I TOUCH IT!?" Much more interesting to watch, & a great learning opportunity.
"the nice smell of the christmas tree, that's the toxins" so we've got some fungi and beetles double-teaming these trees. you make pesto out of their larvae? and courting hissing? wow! thank you Green, Six, and Castaneda. This episode was too amazing.
Hank, whyyyy do you keep shaking the dish??? XD That aside, there was a lot of good information in this and it was fun to watch. I hope we see Dr. Diana Six return for another episode!
I grew up in Montana in the 80s and every year when I go back it makes me sick to see the damage the pine beetles are doing to the forests. It literally me watching my childhood memories wither and die.
We have similar problems with the Emerald Ash Borer in the northern Midwest and East. Pretty much all of the ash is gone here in Ohio and wherever these beetles have become established the ash trees have been wiped out.
Gerald Perez sorry, my brain has a tick to always try to put jokes in a realistic context - it just happens. I kinda like it, but everyone else doesn't.
My second grade class pet was a pair of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. It was our teacers pets from home, she loved insects. The roaches had babies toward the end of the school year and it was fascinating to see them hatch.
I love how Hank's first reaction to hearing the world record for eating those cockroaches was "That seems like pretty easy to beat." He's like "What, only 36? I could totally beat that!"
It took me quite a while to stop screaming for just seeing them, through a screen!, i don't think i would've stopped if i saw them irl, let alone HOLDING THEM *shiver*
I was about to comment on how much I loved Dr. Six as a guest here (sometimes I skip through the first part to see Jessi's animal), and then she nonchalantly mentions eating bugs. O.o
Cockroach diplomacy must be difficult. All it takes is one wrong hiss to tell the tree that you are negotiating a treaty with (after they launched a chemical attack against innocent bugs) that you want to have sex with them. That would be incredibly #awkward .
I think I would get to a point where I'd say "Well, my mouth is already full of cockroaches and that sucks, but one more really wouldn't suck significantly more."
LynneSkysong Are we talking the Madagascar variety? If so I think the neurotoxin mentioned would dictate at which point you stopped; the point at which one could no longer control their jaw.
You should do a video purely on the blight, its pretty...impressive. You can drive for MILES in the Canadian Rockies now without seeing a single living tree.
oh, I always love those. It feels like they're getting better and better, I mean, in the first ones guests were pretty much always sci-show related, But now they're amazing experts! (not that I didn't like the early episodes)
Im from British Columbia, and its scary seeing the huge patches of dried out, red, pine trees within the green forest, and you can see the patches get get bigger every year
I can barely hear this. I always have the volume on my laptop turned up full because I live next to a busy road and this is way too quiet. You should consider moving the mic closer or something.
Another fun fact about cockroaches: If you approach them with a vaccum cleaner from behind they turn around and run into the vaccum cleaner! XD That's because they interprete the air moving from their front to their back as an animal breathing on them. They think there is a predator in front of them so they turn around and run. But I don't know if this is true for all roaches...
My son's 3rd grade class had an insect demonstration last year and they asked for parents to volunteer as insect wranglers. I got to handle a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. They look pretty scary from the top but if you tip them up and look under that impressive carapace, they have cute little black faces and a very modest, retiring posture.
Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches! I may have cheered when I saw what Hank was holding. My fourth grade teacher kept some and some stick insects so I have some fond memories, unlike poor Hank xD
If the trees have never had to "battle the beetle," as the Professor says, then they have clearly never experienced the glorious, magnificent torture that comes with a reading of Dr. Seuss's "Fox in Sox."
13:13 Jessi! You've come to save the day! The whole "bug" thing with Hank has always slightly annoyed me, not a big deal, but I'm happy that Jessi has cleared this up. :D
I woke up with a tree roach on my chest on the comforter one morning as an early teenager. He was literally staring right at my face. It took a second to register what I was seeing. But then I flinged the comforter up, and he went flying. You don't forget stuff like that.
Wow the Mountain Pine Beetles sound crazy awesome (and terrible) but yeah never heard of them before, but wow what a pest. Also I really like Dr. Diana Six, she explains things really clearly, and is obviously interested in everything she says. So awesome and cool, can she come back? :D
Diana Six should come back! She is made of awesome!
And she did! :)
I live in British Columbia. A few years back, you would look up into the hills and they would be a burning red colour from all the dying trees. Now you look up and the hills are grey from all the dead trees. This episode was really close to home for me.

Please, please, bring back Dr. Diana again. She's pure awesomeness!! :)
I admire Diana's amazing amount of obvious passion she has for her job. I *love* how much she is very clearly in love with insects. It's absolutely refreshing to see someone so unapologetically in love with their interests.
This is one of the best guests ever. I very much enjoyed listening to her!
Jessi is my favorite part of this show! She's pretty much amazing
she's awesome!!!
Dr. Six and Jessi shaking their heads together and teaching Hank about creepy crawlies is adorable.
I just fell in love with Dr.Six, so cool! also, her and Jessie together? best thing ever!
Diana six is sooo cool. I really like her way of looking at the world, for so far I can gather that from this short clip. I applaud her.
And yes, of course Hank and Jessi are cool as well. But you know I love ya. ;)
Dr. Diana Six is absolutely the most interesting and awesome person you ever interviewed! Thank you!
Thank you for your work Dianna Six, Animal wonders Montana and SciShow!
Dr. Six is one of the most amazing scientists I've seen. What a pleasure to have her here on scishow.
Hank, you have developed fantastic timing for these interview style videos. Thank you as always for the content.
It's always entertaining to hear Diana talk about bark beetles!
Dr. Six is a keeper. Bright, funny, and all those good things. I hope you have reason to bring her back.
I remember a few years ago when I was living in Edmonton, driving to the Rockies they where stopping everyone and checking for the pine beetle.
I love SciShow Talkshow! Other animals are truly fascinating! Keep up the awesome work :D
I love Dr Six quite a bit. It excites me when you have these unique professionals on the talk show rather than just youtube people.
I like how Diana is just so upset by them talking about eating and killing the bugs. She is so sweet!
i don't know why, but your talk shows just sooth my soul! (even if there are disturbing topics)
"the nice smell of the christmas tree, that's the toxins"
so we've got some fungi and beetles double-teaming these trees.
you make pesto out of their larvae?
and courting hissing?
wow! thank you Green, Six, and Castaneda. This episode was too amazing.
fascinating.
Great episode on every level.
Thank you very much!
Pine beetle pesto? That is AWESOME.
This program is fantastic!
omg.... Dr Six is awesome !!!
Great guest and a terrifying topic. My favorite type of SciShow Talk Show.
Dr. Six is one of the best scishow guests ever.
one of the best episodes yet!!
Hank, whyyyy do you keep shaking the dish??? XD
That aside, there was a lot of good information in this and it was fun to watch. I hope we see Dr. Diana Six return for another episode!
I grew up in Montana in the 80s and every year when I go back it makes me sick to see the damage the pine beetles are doing to the forests. It literally me watching my childhood memories wither and die.
Wow, this was my favourite one yet!
We have similar problems with the Emerald Ash Borer in the northern Midwest and East. Pretty much all of the ash is gone here in Ohio and wherever these beetles have become established the ash trees have been wiped out.
I want to be this woman when I grow up.
Whan an awesome person is Dr. Six
Wow, this is the first I've ever heard of a mountain pine beetle and the huge impact the have on forest.
2:42 "Trees are pretty scary" (insert obvious Lord of the Rings joke here)
Awesome! I learned a LOT of things from this video.
"How many pine beetles are there?" Me: Bursts out laughing !!!!
I suppose he meant the different kinds, since she was talking about mountain pine beetles.
I am 99% sure he wasnt looking for a number of beetles. I think he was looking for a number of pine beetle species.
Yes I am aware of that but it was just funny .-. Cause she was like. ._.
Gerald Perez sorry, my brain has a tick to always try to put jokes in a realistic context - it just happens. I kinda like it, but everyone else doesn't.
Hank, you neglected to ask Dr. Six the big question - is she afraid of Seven?
I wanna see more of Diana Six. Her field is similar to what I'm interested in doing as a career.
Considering the world record for eating hot dogs is 76 hot dogs in *10 minutes* , he absolutely had a point.
So very glad I live in Scandinavia. So very glad.
Yay, more Entomology based SciShows please.
bring this woman back.
"Bug" loving red head!!! I'm in nerd love. I love u jessi
I love Diana's reactions ^^ especially when Jessi said about mouths and throats going numb XD
This woman was awesome
She's absolutely wonderful. I want to try some that pesto and that beer.
everything about this video was incredibly weird. i loved it.
It took me quite a while to stop screaming for just seeing them, through a screen!, i don't think i would've stopped if i saw them irl, let alone HOLDING THEM *shiver*
This is one of my favorite episodes! When I was a kid, my brother and I had pet Madagascar hissing cockroaches. This makes me super nostalgic.
Bark Beetle Larvae Pesto!!
Good episode. Thanks
this woman is fantastic
I said out loud "don't eat it!" at the screen and then Hank said it. I'm feeling so connected.
I was about to comment on how much I loved Dr. Six as a guest here (sometimes I skip through the first part to see Jessi's animal), and then she nonchalantly mentions eating bugs. O.o
Merry Christmas everyone o
wow Dr. Six is AWESOME!
Dr. Six looks like future Jessi
Cockroach diplomacy must be difficult. All it takes is one wrong hiss to tell the tree that you are negotiating a treaty with (after they launched a chemical attack against innocent bugs) that you want to have sex with them. That would be incredibly #awkward .
"Insect that freaks Hank out"
......Favorited and I haven't even seen it :P
Also, Dr. Six reminds me of Jane Goodall.
I'm a horrible person... I just thought a new P4A perk: pay a $H*T ton of money for Hank to eat a cockroach. Half goes to Hank, half to charity.
***** Ok, they could do it Desert Bus for Child's Play style with each additional cockroach. :D
LynneSkysong At what point would you give up caring and just be like "these aren't half bad".
Awesome episode! Love Dr. Six's attitude. Can you get her back for a return engagement?
She is a very attractive older woman. She sounds like she's very intelligent.
You should do a video purely on the blight, its pretty...impressive. You can drive for MILES in the Canadian Rockies now without seeing a single living tree.
Dr. Diana seems like a fascinating person. Invite her back! Ask her to bring larvae to feed to Hank!
"...more than us cells" *raised-eyebrow stare* lol
GREAT Scitalk!
oh, I always love those.
It feels like they're getting better and better, I mean, in the first ones guests were pretty much always sci-show related, But now they're amazing experts!
(not that I didn't like the early episodes)
That was the most American pronunciation of Saskatchewan ever. Loved it.
Awesome episode. :)
15:30 the hank courting hiss XD
BOOOOOORIIIIING
Im from British Columbia, and its scary seeing the huge patches of dried out, red, pine trees within the green forest, and you can see the patches get get bigger every year
your guest was very enjoyable.
Dr diana six... what a cool name. And she makes beer from an exotic yeast too.
Sitting ducks or standing trees? haha!
This video is really interesting.
Just checking in to say: "Diana Six" sounds like an awesome name for an android.
She does look like a slightly older ''Number six'' from battlestar galactica.
when i saw her name, first i thought to my self, seven of nine is not that odd name after this one :P
I can barely hear this. I always have the volume on my laptop turned up full because I live next to a busy road and this is way too quiet. You should consider moving the mic closer or something.
its just you, its loud as hell for me
Check your settings of Adobe Flash Player volume
Praseek Its just this video, the rest are fine
It's an issue with your computer most likely. On the 3 computers I use at my home they all play this extremely loudly.
Kylan Walker I just said its only this video
Yes!! I'm also a "super believer" in consuming insects as a protein source.
I always get so excited when people talk about Saskatchewan. Even if we are about to get killed by a swarm of insects.
Oh that's really interesting, then it gets a little quiet and you hear the pounding beats.
WE NEED MORE OF DIANA SIX
Another fun fact about cockroaches: If you approach them with a vaccum cleaner from behind they turn around and run into the vaccum cleaner! XD That's because they interprete the air moving from their front to their back as an animal breathing on them. They think there is a predator in front of them so they turn around and run. But I don't know if this is true for all roaches...
please do an episode on insects as food. cicadas, grubs, beetles, crickets, beetle mouth yeast beer.... we need a feast of bugs :D
Thank goodness I live in Montana aswell. I would die if I saw a cakroch. But there perrty fascinating
dat courting hiss.
sharing the enthusiasm is the best kind of sharing

"battle the beetle" :)
As a fellow Floridian I can sympathize with the plight of Hank.
Can someone please make a GIF of Hank 'court hissing'?
Wow the Mountain Pine Beetles sound crazy awesome (and terrible) but yeah never heard of them before, but wow what a pest. Also I really like Dr. Diana Six, she explains things really clearly, and is obviously interested in everything she says. So awesome and cool, can she come back? :D
she looks like a badass
