Nigeria is a country full of diverse cultures and traditions located in the Western part of Africa. So are some other countries in Africa, farther to the entire world.
The Osun Oshogbo Festival is a ceremony celebrated in Osun state in Nigeria dated far back 700 years ago and more, as an annual international ceremony of culture attracting people from all over the world. People come to visit from Nigeria and diaspora for different reasons, some to be that they are seeking from Osun, the river goddess blessings, protection, fertility, some of them even show up for just the merriment.
Back to the topic of the moment, Arugba, calabash carrier in the Osun oshogbo festival is meant to be a virgin and is chosen by the consultation of the gods before being ordained as the rightful one.
We went further to brief into the life of the young girl, Fatia Adeyemi who is presently the calabash carrier "Arugba". What were her parent's taught after she has been chosen as the Arugba, what was her decision, her background and many more in this video.

But Cultural domination play role, in our demonizing our cultural entity. As widely travel Yoruba, that lived in three different continent, and once Practice Islam, Christianity, Buddhist, Oshun devotee and now humanist, my imagination and world view about religion change, I do not need to attack any Religion. Because all religion come into manifestation, from different experience and History. But my respect to my Yoruba indigenous Culture, remain unchanged, because i came from that entity.

People act as if both parents and child had a choice, but the truth is she'd have been tormented if she didn't accept to become a calabash carrier. Her unhappiness shows she understands the deeper implications and fall-offs of this charge ...

by the law of probability, within the next few years the calabash will fall one day. does that mean that tragedy would befall on us all by then? obviously not. these are just myths made by men just like when Christians and muslims claim the bad people would rot in hell after judgement. Religion is not as important as we all take it. For those bad mouthing the Orisha Religion, i think you shouldn't. i am a Yoruba man and i have no religion that i follow but i happen to appreciate our own Orisha Religion more than any other religion. our culture and religion is really beautiful but we all have failed to realize that. Every Single religion has evolved with time including christianity and islam but the orisha religion in Nigeria has been resistant to changes, i personally think we should try to modify our religion to suite better to the modern world and still preserving the main aspect of the religion because now we "know" better. Take a look at Candomble and Santeria which are Latin American religions which evolved from the Yoruba Orisha Religion, they have all been modified to suite modern threads. Bloody sacrifices and Food wasting could also be abolished "maybe" and even this "Arugba" tradition could be adjusted to an appropriate way o suiting the girl child socially, psychologically, spiritually and physical. remember religion is not as important as we all think, what does the trick is our "FAITH". That's just all i think, I'm open to corrections, suggestions and Criticism. Thank you

What you’ve said does make a lot of sense and comes from a place of vast understanding but I don’t think modernizing what has been standing in tradition is going to work out, modernizing is basically ‘whitening it up’ which is tainting it and then with candomble and Santeria, you’re right but it was taken to Latin America by the West African, mainly Yoruba slaves and also Haitian Voodou religion too Is in direct descent from Yoruba Orisha Religion.
