    *** I want to make something clear. This video is about these items being overrated AS ESSENTIALS. That doesn’t mean I dislike the items or think you shouldn’t wear them if they work for you. I do think there are far too many articles and videos online telling people they ‘have to wear’ something, and I disagree. I’m using myself as an example here to show that not everything on those lists will work for everyone and that you need to take your own personal style and lifestyle into account when building your wardrobe. I can only speak for myself as I don’t know what’s essential to you. We are all different and I love that we all have different tastes. Fashion would be boring if we all liked the same things. I hope you enjoy the video. 🤟

    With regard to blazers, I find that linen blazers are a great balance between casual and semi formal. For many occasions wearing only a shirt and pants is really too marginally casual. A linen blazer can exhibit a wide degree of casualness depending on whether it is pressed or not, come in a wide variety of colors and is relatively inexpensive. I consider them an essential item that serves particularly well in situations of varying temperatures , like going from warm days into cool evenings or from ambient outdoor temperatures to air conditioned spaces.

    Great video Harry :) I'd highly recommend reading Derek Guy's twitter threads on some of these garments because you've correctly identified the pitfalls of them but there are ways of styling them. For example; long sleeve knit polos (with a collar band) can work really well with an overcoat, tucked into trousers etc. Those short sleeve examples you showed are certainly terrible. Similarly, chunky turtlenecks with texture, that aren't glued to the neck like the Uniqlo ones shown, can look great in the traditional fisherman style. Also, a tweed sport coat can look plenty casual with mid-wash jeans. The navy blazer is definitely harder to pull off. I'll give you the beige chinos though - they can go in the bin! 😂

    My thoughts
    1. They (beige chinos) can be overrated when talking about them on videos like this, but I tend to think they come in handy more often that we give them credit for.
    2. I agree that polo shirts don't work with many styles. For me I think I need more of them though for more semi-formal occasions.
    3. Blazer jackets I think should be more common. I definitely don't think they need to be an everyday thing, but in order to elevate healthy society (from the masculine perspective), I think men should try to adopt this one a little more frequently.
    4. Yeah ... a peacoat isn't an essential specifically ... but I do think a nicer bundling layer is essential ... I think a peacoat is just an easy go-to recommendation.
    5. Ok, I see where you're coming from. Essential - not precisely. I think it is good, but obviously with the right style and setting.
    6. I love turtlenecks, but I don't personally wear them on the regular, so I'd have to get some to see if I agree or disagree with this or not.
    7. Chelsea Boots - ugh, I want to disagree, but I agree that they don't look good on all men. I think everyone should try them on just to find out, but I do think you might have a point with this one.
    Interesting takes. Keep the vids coming!

  • @shaf621
    @shaf621 10 дней назад

    I believe what's important to note is that 'overrated' doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, it's just used to denote things that are given a lot more credit than what they actually deserve so in other words - they're decent but not they're not amazing. Without further ado here's my take on your 'overrated' clothing items.
    1) Beige Chinos - I can vouch for this and I completely get your point even though I myself am a big fan of them, a lot of people take this cookie cutter/basic approach when it comes to wearing these specific chinos, they look at it as the de-facto chino that they should wear all the time for special occasions/work. Instead of going for that specific colour go for ones in Olive Green, Navy, Grey mainly for the Summer, then Black for all round the year, they're just as versatile and can make you stand out from the crowd.
    2) Polo Shirts - Yeah Polo's are a great shirt to wear during the Spring/Summer months but their versatility leaves a lot to be desired, depending on the style of the shirt it'll be harder to dress up with certain outfits as you have the pique type which is more casual then then chambray which is more formal. Then on top of that, they're hard to layer under jumpers due to the flimsy collar.
    3) Blazers - They look very polished and smart, but yeah I agree that they're overdone a lot in outfits. Adding to what you said about not being for everyone - I agree, depending on the type of job you have you probably won't really need to wear them, say if you work as an IT Technician, Electrician, Plumber or a Waiter.
    4) Peacoat - I'm ngl I was super into these while I was in Sixth Form mainly for the reason that they looked really smart and dapper, but they're nowhere near as versatile as a standard hooded jacket. They only really suit people in great shape and in terms of weather protection they don't protect you from the rain as there's no hood. Furthermore they can look a bit too polished for everyday wear, like imagine wearing that with a pair of joggers or baggy jeans.
    5) Luxury Watches - With these I'd say if you're spending more than £250 you're wasting your money. Unless there's something truly ground-breaking about the watch there's no need to spend that much. You shouldn't skimp out and go for the cheapest watches but instead look out for ones that have great deals on them and always go for a trusted watchmaker such as Seiko, Citizen, Casio, Accurist or Rotary.
    6) Turtlenecks - I quite like these but again I do think a lot of people overwear these a lot and can be difficult to wear given the variations of the style and fit, some enhance your appearance whereas some exaggerate your worst - especially if you have a bit of a belly.
    7) Chelsea Boots - I completely get this one, imo these work well if you have a slim, slender frame and slim/skinny/tapered jeans to go along with it. They don't suit everyone, plus you can't wear them all year round especially in the UK where it rains a lot. Suede Chelsea's look the best though they're impractical as they're fare even worse in wet weather compared to the leather ones. Leather ones look too formal and are harder to pair with a casual outfit.

    I love my polos. I think the point is maybe that these essentials aren't usually actually essential but might be really useful and get a lot of wear for a lot of people. I always see white and black tees recommended as essentials and I never wear either colour

  • @DatBaataR
    @DatBaataR 12 дней назад +3

    I think you have to differentiate between suit jacket, blazer and sports jacket here. Of course you can't just throw on a worsted wool navy suit jacket to grab a coffee. A sports jacket on the other hand is often made from a more rugged fabric such as tweed and is therefore way more casual and works with most casual items of clothing. Perfect example for this is the Ivy League style.

    After watching plenty of these videos, I'm kinda fed up. I mean, what's wrong with dressing like an NPC? Why does everyone have to be unique with their clothing? Why should your choice of clothing reflect your personality? What's wrong with being common? Why has it become so complicated? Why is everything so overrated? People should start focusing on building a personality that says, 'Listen to me,' and not, 'Look at me.' period!

    Agree! Beige chinos are the Applebee’s of pants. With a navy blazer and dark loafers for full ivy look, sure, otherwise there are too many other great options.
    But a well cut polo is hard to beat for casual wear.
    I love and wear blazers a lot, I actually love to wear them to Disneyland and to dinners out, but they are not a popular look and you have to be comfortable making others feel underdressed, or just being really comfortable in your own skin.
    I agree that Chelseas are not essential, but they are great for inclement weather, especially if they have a dainite or lug sole. Harder to style, for sure. They need a slim cut trouser, ala 1964 Beatles look. Essential? Absolutely not.

    As someone who purchased a beige chino this year thinking I would figure it out how to make it work just as everybody does I completely agree! I’ve been wearing a wrist watch everyday since past two years for one reason alone - cutting down screen time, and its worked very well for me. Somehow, I feel that every time we check the time on the phone, the next instinctive reaction is to check some app and an onwards domino effect. With a wrist watch, I sometimes even forget that that I have a phone on me. Buy one solid slim good quality watch with a good water resistance and you are done, get it sized to fit just over your wrist-bone; may take a few days to get used to wearing one but after the break-in period you will feel empty without it. Just be careful not to go down the wrist watch rabbit hole 😊. Fully agree on the beige chinos, they look great but just don’t work, it’s like the sauce/dressing you always buy, but never end up using !

    I agree on a lot of items - pea coats 💯! Chinos are more 50/50 on me, the light beige colour isn’t for everyone and it reminds me too much of 90’s country club vibes. The only pair I own (and approve of haha) are Muji’s darted wide chinos, the pleats and the wider fit of the pants tranforms the whole outfit and it comes in a darker brown colour.
    Watches are neutral territory for me, I wish I could pick it up as a hobby but Im limited to a smart watch for medical reasons. I do love shopping for straps, the steel bracelet is the least evil.
    Turtlenecks also highlight my double chin which is why I stray away from it. Mock necks >>

    What I notice when it comes to blazers is that many people are not aware of how shoulder padding totally destroys their silhouette... Let's assume that there is a correlation between people working out and caring about their outfit these days, yet many draw too much attention to their already wide shoulders with excessive padding. Or, like with the guy wearing the light brown jacket on the right in your 2nd photo, the jacket looks stiff and too wide. Also note how his sleeves are attached in a way that creates that terrible "bump" on your shoulder, making them "stick out" slightly to the top...

    One doesn't need to wear a sports coat. One gets to wear a sports coat! :D
    Also, I think the issue with peacoats is that most brands nowadays make them too short! A peacoat should be long enough to fully cover a suit jacket, ideally close to mid thigh (where most modern overcoats hit). Have a look at vintage WWI and WWII peacoats, they look amazing. Modern overcoats also tend to be too short, hitting mid thigh when the should hit at least below the knee.
