Rickard Remelin you are so right!! I've loved their brilliance since I was 14 (now 59!),and I Loooove the heavy rock influences... But I especially love seeing our Ron indulging in a wee bit of head-bandage.... Great tune... And terribly underrated....!!
Sparks have always been very niche... I think that’s what makes them so good. It’s a creative freedom more popular music doesn’t get. Just be happy you found them ;)
My 2nd favourite Sparks tune ever!! I can't believe it was 13 years ago when it came out and got banned by the BBC. I know.....really? One day this will be a massive hit.
Compared to when I first heard this song in 2006, it's more relevant now. Sparks did an excellent job expaining the frustration of a man's mid-life crisis.

I guess cos they were pushed out from the big record markets as early as 1976 and, as social media didn't exist in those days, they had to prioritise which ever country seemed to support them, hence for instance 1980 spent in France as it seemed only place buying their 1980 material, then set eyes on the US once a few singles picked up MTV rotation, so UK releases (not that I was there, can only guess) when have been low-key, God knows how any fan got them back then, though a Sparks fan on their excellent 2021 movie "The Sparks Brothers" I now a proud owner of said that, as a UK fan, their 4 monthly newsletter arriving on the doorstep was an amazing gift as it told him (and all) where they were and what they were doing. He even mentions a mate's mother hearing in 1981 they were on a radio station over here and they'd be at a London hotel in a "boxing ring to beat each other up". Ha! Clearly promo for their explosive 1981 LP, and he got there with his mate and they got both their records signed and even met them up as they were lucky enough to appeal to the right security guard, say the right things, flash the current single and then catch a runner for the band! All I can say is, the best stuff is never well-known. Apart from ABBA, and the legacy Kate Bush made for herself early, most well-know things are irrelevant th the bigger picture, if not downright crap and insulting!
Sparks fans have brains and follow the band for years. Someday the world will get it. Remember Queen opened for them in 1970. Sparks are still with us.

I can only imagine!

Try "Vertigo Motel" by Dog Fashion Disco.
I have been a fan since 1971. Such a great song with a killer video. Sparks continues to create some great music!!!
Sparks should be asked to write a James Bond movie theme song.
This song would be perfect.
Crap like that?! Dumb down to be in the bullshit company of cuntdonna, sheryl cow, garbage (in name also), adele the caterwauling arsehole who can't sing for shit, Tina bag Turner (after a far superior and better sung-naturally-song from Ace Of Base was aborted and given to that howling bag instead?!) and all the other trash post-1989?! Er...no dear. Besides J B has no relevance any more, he died decades ago. Who hears of a human spy still working at age 140?
One of my favorites. It's just well crafted, well done, and a unique song, and only Sparks could create it!
This is a masterpiece
I can't believe this awesome song has so few views? It's Sparks and it's awesome! Fantastic work! You're still amazing!
Rickard Remelin you are so right!! I've loved their brilliance since I was 14 (now 59!),and I Loooove the heavy rock influences... But I especially love seeing our Ron indulging in a wee bit of head-bandage.... Great tune... And terribly underrated....!!

It's shorter than the album version. I miss the cut passages.

Just watched the Doc on Netflix last night about them. They were totally brilliant. Can't compare them to any one else All HAIL the MHIL brothers!!!!!
Compared to when I first heard this song in 2006, it's more relevant now. Sparks did an excellent job expaining the frustration of a man's mid-life crisis.
Can you tell me more? Are we to interpret "dick around" like "dickering around"? Is this about a big executive who does nothing but waste time or is he a cheater who uses women?
@@radvibes The song refers to a man feeling he is wasting his time and not having anything to show for his life.
It's actually about me splitting with Russell after my Dad died, not acrimonious, he and I were not suited for one another. Sparks are in every way deserving of all the accolades and more :)
My 11 year old loves this song and loves Sparks.
OMG why are these guys so amazing? Seriously, best band in history, and I've heard a lot.
Should be in the bloody Rock n Roll Hall of fame!
You're saying they're NOT? Whaaaaaa...ttt...hhheeee..ffff.... Seriously? How can Sparks not be in the Rock*n*Roll hall of fame?? That's unbelievable!!
@@blu4085 Genius don't count, record selling and money do. 🙄 So, as long as "the masses" aren't interested in LISTENING to intelligent music instead of muzak and "I love you, I love you I'm so hurt, I can't live.. bla bla" they will never get there.
It is a SHAME. 😡
f- the Rnr hall of fame. its a sham. If it wasn't Sparks would have been in there long ago.
Look at how long it took for Cheap Trick and Devo to get in, even when their stuff was on display…
Amazing and clever song. Come to think of it, all of us praise Russell's voice, but I think we forget an unique talent in MEMORIZE LYRICS!!!
My own memory is in level with "Probably nothing".
I AM FULL OF ADMIRATION! 💖
Good point. I sing quite a bit and like to inflict it on others from time to time but I can only keep 9, 10 full songs in my head at a time and most of them will have to be pretty simple.

Hoping for a new tour (to Sweden also, please!) with their next album they are working on now! 😁 (August 2019)
Any way the wind blows, this is one fantastic song
I love so much the heavy part. Those guitars !!!
Dean Menta everybody!
It sounds like Queen. Opera rock. Brillant as usual ❤❤
Why the hell, why the hell is this gorgeous band still not part of the Hall Of Fame???!!!
They're too good
I love this song and this music style. Thank you Sparks ! I love you
Honest to god, I cannot for the life of me understand why Sparks are not way more known.
This is utterly insane. I love it.
These guys are just ridiculously underrated
I heard this performed live at Bergen Fest on the 13th of June...it was really impressing! They're whole set was, but this is a hard song to do.

I like the cellos too. I'm with Yo-yo ma. not enough cellos in the world.
Sparks fans have brains and follow the band for years. Someday the world will get it. Remember Queen opened for them in 1970. Sparks are still with us.

This is the first time I've heard this. Brilliant! I'm in hysterics.
Loved a review on The Quietus that says about the voice-and-keyboard version (Two Hands, One Mouth tour): "The harsh original of rejection anthem 'Dick Around' makes Faith No More's 'Midlife Crisis' sound like a toddler's tantrum, but here, without the power guitars, it is elegant and resigned, angry, but more vulnerable." I can only imagine!
On the other hand, Milife Crisis has come from a bunch of guys in their 30's (+/-), while this one comes from those who have actually experienced the matter.
My new favorite Sparks song, which is impossible.

This is an absolute mastepiece👌 How the hell how the hell how the hell Mr Russell Mael breathes In this song to sing is incomprehensible ❤️ Bloody marvellous 👍
Utterly agreed. When you think of all the shitheads that get accolades every 5 minutes (a rotten unending fashion that exploded in the 90s to become a great plague (like most everyone around now), none of them could even attempt to sing anything other than in the most basic, simplistic way, never mind the fact that they all sing the same basic song anyway.

Finally, the theme song of my life!
That's what's great about art, music, literature, and the internet. We are all not aline in these feelings we have about our lives.
How on earth does he remember the lyrics to all these fantastic songs....???
Have you heard of the 21x21, 'Sparks Spectacular ', when they played their, at that time, 20 albums in chronological order, one each night, to finish with the release of 'Exotic Creatures of the Deep' (2008)? 21 albums in 21 nights. Plus single B-sides and other stuff they had written for other artists or collaborations. If you are a fan, I assume that you have. I don't know exactly, but estimate around 240-250 songs. 😵
Russell had a few mistakes, and at one time ('Tearing The Place Apart', if you haven't already seen it, look for it here on RUclips, he is absolutely adorable, and Ron, being the solid, protecting Big Brother is so cool!
No, I wasn't there, but I certainly wish I had been 😭😭😭!
@@annabackman3028 "A few mistakes". God, anyone would, but then anyone wouldn't set themselves this task and to deliver it all. HOW did he do it? HOW did Ron remember all those intricate melodies to so many songs, and the structuring of each and what comes where? Most artists have a problem just doing the same old 10-20 songs they always pick, and the acts I love hardly ever differ their shows. They'll be great, but so much of their oeuvre they don't bother with, it's a wonder they bothered making it.

You haven't found 'Tearing the place apart' from the "21x21"?
As almost everywhere else, I've put a little something in the comments. Perhaps that could clarify my opinion, admiration, better.
ALSO, somewhere in the comments, on some video with 'Dick Around' I asked the same question as 'Jag Betty' began this thread with; how can he remember? I added that I'm full of admiration, and my memory is like in 'Probably Nothing'.

@@annabackman3028 Thank you for the insert, I have commented on the video itself, makes it easier to find so thanks for your help there. I love the way they just took the accident in stride, but I'm not surprised they are as gleefully wonderful and characterful live as they are on their records. They may sing 'I Wish You Were Fun' but one never needs to of them. How many acts can truthfully say that they merge the serious and zany and witty so perfectly that you often can't even be sure if a song is portraying all three, but then most acts can't even achieve just ONE element.
I love this song, constancy is an amazing quality 👏

so here we go... back in the day, you could'nt aFFORD TO BUY EVERY ALBUM THAT YOU SAW. YOu know, before music became basically free, AND THERE WERE SO MANY STrange looking artists out therein the 80's. So I saw a few Sparks album covers. I thought " cool name, but who are these goofs? They can't be good." But those images were certainly memorable. Now, i just finished the LONG Doc on NF. Really cool stuff. I would connect them with prog rock, as heard in this song. Its really good stuff, and I'm looking forward to going down -or shall i say-dicking around - the Sparks rabbit hole. Cheers! Oh , and If Todd Rundgren worked with them, then I'm all in!
