When I listened to him read the letters that some of the British soldiers sent to their loved ones before the Battle of the Somme, knowing the next day they were going over the trench into a massacre of machine gun fire, I had to pull my car over to regain my senses. That whole series, especially the parts about Verdun, gave me a mild form of PTSD. Now, if I ever am having a shitty day, I find solace in recognizing how things actually could be so much worse, that I could be stuck on the front lines at Verdun.

"This western-front business couldn’t be done again, not for a long time. The young men think they could do it but they couldn’t. They could fight the first Marne again but not this. This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes. The Russians and Italians weren’t any good on this front. You had to have a whole-souled sentimental equipment going back further than you could remember. You had to remember Christmas, and postcards of the Crown Prince and his fiancée, and little cafés in Valence and beer gardens in Unter den Linden and weddings at the mairie, and going to the Derby, and your grandfather’s whiskers. […] This kind of battle was invented by Lewis Carroll and Jules Verne and whoever wrote Undine, and country deacons bowling and marraines in Marseilles and girls seduced in the back lanes of Wurtemburg and Westphalia. Why, this was a love battle - there was a century of middle-class love spent here."
      F. Scott Fitzgeral - Tender is the Night

Sadly, it seems to have gone extinct....which is especially frustrating during this election. His truly META analysis of current events is _as_ interesting as his analysis of history.

Late to the game here but I agree. The social fabric is dwindling and everyone treats everyone else worse, since they are far away and can shout from the safety of their keyboards. Now, people can't even agree on sets of truths in order to prompt the discussion. So it's much easier to view the world as a very simple, every issue is 0 or 1, every person is 0 or 1, there's no spectrum or complexity. It's much easier on peoples' minds to view the world this way, then they can start generating farfetched ideas and shout them at everyone else.

Ha, yeah well I remember a couple of the points Two Term Trump has been making that sort of align to that goal- charging more to have US forces deployed or rolling back on the number of global bases- the other being a clever point of washing the US hands from policing North Korea- make it China's job, China shares a border with them and is their only ally anyhow.

One of many reasons Dan Carlin is awesome is because he uses historical primary and secondary sources in each of his topics. Is he an actual historian, No. But that's his strength. He is using the tools of historians to explain areas of history for the general public. His delivery is exciting and evocative without being over the top and all his quotes come from the written record.

The racism of some Trump supporters is almost definitely down to the fact that the white working class have been systematically ignored by the Left because they stopped caring about poverty and started caring entirely about racial groups.
If you have idiotic middle class people screaming "white privilege" at poor white people too much, guess what: you get an equally stupid response.
