Durga puja in Kolkata is largely a community effort. People from local area pitch in and hire local artists to create puja pandal with decorations. The central idea is to come up with a unique theme preferably using recycled, waste or everyday materials. The entire pandal and props are made locally at site by skilled artists.
This particular pandal from Manohar Pukur area of south Kolkata was using packing foam to make flowers. Entire pandal had clever use of mirrors, rotating discs to create a hypnotic effects. The central theme of women empowerment was subtly projected by posters of powerful women which turns into images of goddess Durga while looking from opposite angle.
Dozens of artists worked for over a month to create such extravagant installation.
