I just took the NETA Personal Training exam!

  • I took the National Exercise Trainers Association exam to become certified as a Personal Trainer today! here's what I have to say about it!
    I can't tell you what is on the exam, but I can tell you that I studied and read all the material and felt confident that I passed when I turned in my exam today!
    results take two weeks so stay tuned for official results!

    Did you have to memorize the formulas/calculations

      good question! yes, but not all. like the Rockport one mile walking test..... not necessary to memorize all those numbers, but you should know how to administer the test. (have the person walk as quickly as possible, one mile. then use the formula (which you don't have to memorize) to calculate results. the karvonen formula --- you need to know that inside and out because there are several questions where you need to use it to get an answer about maximum heart rate targets for exercise prescription.... (that one is really important because someone could have a heart attack if they are not accustomed to exercise! so be familiar with how to calculate that) know how to calculate calories, total grams of fat/protein/carbs are in a calorie and how to do those calculations from some info on a nutrition facts label.

      there will be six or seven questions each for the karvonen formula and nutrition facts. they are extremely important to know how to calculate and to memorize. some of the other formulas and stats to know are the percentages from the NETA table for moderate exercise, light exercise, and intense exercise. it's used for calculating the final numbers in the karvonen formula and also the simpler heart rate reserve calculations and they will not give you those percentages.
      as far as anatomy goes: there are a LOT of muscles and bones in the body. but if you just know the bones and muscles of the arms and legs and shoulders that's most relevant. know your directional planes of movement-- lateral, transverse, etc.
      the behavioral stuff you just need to know the buzzwords. whatever there are tables for, be familiar with the highlighted words. precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, etc.
      feel free to ask more questions and I can pull out some notes and answer the best I can. I got 87% on the exam so not perfect but I was pretty happy with that score considering that I knew none of this material beforehand.
