No sane law will prefer importation over local production, and there shouldn't be accusation of monopoly in the absence of competitors. Is the NMDPRA telling Nigerians that a local refinery is regarded as a monopolising threat to importers of refined petroleum products. A local production is assumed to add value to the economic growth of a nation, while on the contrary an import entity is honestly supposed to take away value from the country.

    • @beyourbest4life

This is the most intelligent comment I’ve seen so far. You cannot have monopoly without competitors, and it’s foolish if the government gives credence to foreign refineries over the only functioning local refinery.

How do you protect an industry without crude processing capabilities? Dangote's refinery cannot be grouped together with petroleum products importers. They play at different levels in the downstream supply chain. The only competitors to the refinery are the foreign refineries, the local modular refineries and the 4 NNPC's refineries. So, when the expert was talking about market share and protection of other players - who was he referring to? Should Nigeria destroy Dangote's refinery in order to protect foreign refineries or who? If that refinery will create significant values, help the country achieve better energy security, reduce the country's import bills and depletion of scarce Fx, help stabilize the exchange rate as well as create million of jobs, why not make this a big success? Why can't Nigeria use this to show the global investment community that it's ripe as a safe destination for FDI?

The regulator should force Nigerian crude producers to sell a certain quantity to Dangote. Why should they struggle to source crude while Nigeria is exporting crude. The expert go it all wrong. Dangote is operating in the EPZ so 100% of its finished oroducts is not to be consumed in Nigeria. NNPC has its refinery too which he deliterately refused to factor in. Dangote has repeated several times that its products will be exported too to generate Fx for Nigeria. The expert analysis is misplaced. Other private refineries went into business because they understood Dangote's business model.

Why from OBJ all the way to BUhari did not demand for this until Tinubu and his economic team thought difference. Why this after so much spent by one individual. What is wrong with our govrtment? Are they taking this step to discourage would be investors? With all this grammer, the goverment could not sustain its refineries. I'm perplexed indeed.

My experience shows me how the west is Anti growth. I happened to take a taxi from Ijebuode to ijebuIgbo only to meet with lots of obstacles because of different taxi unions and this is playing well in other industries in the west which makes it goes to highest bidder thereby making startups not to be possible in the west, but it’s not so in the east. If you have ur idea u can start up little without being attacked by any union or police and when u have enough fund then u can go to standardize you startup.

Nigeria has the best and highest quality of crude in the world because it has no sulphur content in it. That is why Nigerian crude oil is known as Sweet Crude. The question of the day us" Why should Dangote buy high sulphur-content crude oil from the USA which is expensive to refine and is not environmenrally-friendly. Why can't Dangote buy Nigerian sweet crude cheaply and refine cheaply?
