  • Today we break out the DJI FPV gear and take it to the FPV Race track. We put it on the course and compare the experience racing DJI FPV directly against an analog race quad. How does it stack up? Is this viable???

    Great notes from a top racer, good to see that latency is not an issue, we have been waiting for someone to do this video thank you.
    As a sportsman class pilot, I think I will only fly DJI at events from here on out, even if my times dont count, i would rather have more fun flying than competing. I wont be winning podium spots most times anyway, if NM Grower and Limon are there. Even if i was, I am personally going to prioritize fun, and in that regard the analog just cant compete anymore on that front.
    (Note: this may be even more of an advantage in my town, as we often incorporate wooded areas in out tracks, and DJI ability to see all ghost branches ahead of time, reduced my crashing by half or more, tracks like you normally setup, this advantage doesnt exist).
    I will be releasing my first racing DJI setup video next week. Great to see you back at it!

      Well, the latency is an issue. It's not 0. There is a difference. However, you can still have plenty of fun flying DJI for racing. It won't be competitive against a top analog setup, but so what? I would have tons of fun if we could get everyone flying DJI and compete in HD.

      Yes sir. My RapidFire started behaving VERY poorly. I'm not sure what happened, but over time it started getting worse and worse reception. The interface on the RapidFire is much better than the Fusion, but the performance on the Fusion seems just as good as when my RapidFire was performing at it's best.

    Good video man! What batteries are you using now?? I'm wanting some good batteries that can take a beating

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад

      Thanks my dude! I'm still flying the Heli-Nation FAF 1300 and 1400 6S batteries. All of this flying here was done on batteries I bought and flew last year. They're still going pretty strong for the most part and they've been through a lot. They certainly take a lot of high amp abuse, but I don't know if they are the most durable to impacts compared to some others. I bet there are some heavier batteries with bigger protection plates that may take more impacts... But I absolutely love my FAF batteries and wouldn't trade them for anything else on the market!

    You were definitely blowing out turns on DJI. They instantly got tighter on analog.

    • @travisSimon365
      @travisSimon365 3 года назад +2

      I agree that the turns are tighter on analog, but I'm not sure we can say that it's the receiver that was responsible. It's a different quad, tuned differently and raced after practicing for a long time on the DJI setup. I would take away from this video that if you're serious about racing, you should stay with analog. But, if you prioritise HD video and wonder if you could reasonably compete in a race ever now and then, the answer is, well, yeah, probably.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад

      I think that's totally fair. The DJI setup is also heavier, which is going to make it harder to keep tight on the turns. But DJI is totally raceable. It's just not going to be AS fast for a lot of fast pilots. But it'll still be pretty damn fast. The speeds I was flying my DJI setup would be very competitive at my local races. And my local races are extremely intense.

    Great Video Jay!!! Is the p
    yrocube your new go to?

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! No, I wouldn't say the Pyro Cube is my new goto. I picked one up because I was a big fan of the Knife frame, and the Pyro Cube was the next iteration from the same designers. My go to is still the Floss 3L frame. But that doesn't mean I won't try other things and analyze what I like or dislike about the other options. It was a really cool build, and it flies really well, so I would say it's been a good experience so far, but that doesn't mean I'll switch to it as my primary racing frame.

  • @nkeney
    @nkeney 3 года назад

    Awesome video and racing. I have been trying to use the DJI Vista with my LapRF and it's also inconsistent. I seem to have the best luck using 25mw power.
    What camera mount are you using for the DJI Camera? Is that the standard fix angle mount you can get from Pyrodrone? If not, did you get it from thingiverse? I haven't found a good camera mount for it. Are you using the Floss 3 or Floss 3L? How did you mount the Vista unit?

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад

      I was running the Vista on a Pyrocube frame not my Floss 3/3L. For the camera I was using a Cherrycraft fixed camera mount. The screw holes don't line up with the DJI cam, so I just press fit it. It works pretty well, but it will pop out in a hard crash. The Vista itself I VHB attached to the top plate and then added a zip tie for extra security.

      @@JohnEFly Thanks for the info, John. I have been watching your videos over the years and each time you are getting better and better. You give hope to us older guys racing against these youngins. :) I really want to get these digital systems to work for racing. It's the next evolution this hobby needs to get more interest to the masses to become a more serious sport.

    What lap timer are you using? I've been hearing good things about the Delta 5 timer with the RotorHazard software on it for Dji. Seems some people are having better luck with it over the ImmersionRC 8-way. Also, how are you not breaking the side braces on your Pyrocube? Ive been breaking them left and right. Forcing me to switch to the floss. :(

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад +1

      I was using the LapRF in this video. I have a Delta5 build as well though that I will be upgrading to Rotor Hazard to do more testing.
      As far as side braces go... I don't know? I haven't broken one yet. I probably just haven't had the right crash yet. I had really good luck with the Knife frame too last year, which is designed by the same designers.

  • @Sconeboy_
    @Sconeboy_ 3 года назад

    One last question, what race timer do you reccomend? Going to try and get it working with DJI like you did.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад +1

      The ImmersionRC LapRF is the gold standard of lap timers. However it's tough to get everything working reliably with DJI. So I'm going to try building a RotorHazard timer and see how that works. Many claim it works much better with DJI.

    Which DJI camera are you using? The original cam or the Nebula Nano? Awesome flying btw!

    • @Sconeboy_

      @@JohnEFly Oh good, that cam is garbage for racing. I rebuilt one of my HD racers with the Nano and the latency is much worse than the original cam. Felt kinda scammed by caddx because they never mentioned that fact until after it released..

    Great video. But next time try focus mode off.

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад +1

      It's interesting. I don't really like focus mode. I feel like a horse with blinders on. But without focus mode on 25Mbps the whole screen looks like garbage. It's a tough balance between the two for me with racing.
      The great thing is that 50Mbps completely solves the issue for racing. It's too bad there are only 3 50Mbps channels though...

  • @PlanetJeroen

    Awesome flying, but a bit apple's and oranges, as the analogue quad and the DJI one where not the same otherwise, right?

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  3 года назад

      Not identical no. Very similar, but not identical. The quads will never truly be identical. I can't fit the DJI system in my analog quads. I would need to purposefully build a new worse analog quad and add dead weight to make it otherwise identical to a DJI quad. So therefore I'm okay with slight differences. I wasn't looking at which was faster, I think that would be clear. It was more about the experience racing a DJI quad.
